Alex Barth's post-OTAs "way too early" roster projection

Absolutely correct. I even remember Godwin saying he would go by TB12s house and watch Welker and Jules on film to help him acclimate to what Brady wanted.. it's still amazing to this day that TB12 was able to go out in year 1 and win another tittle. Just remarkable

I feel the projecting 7 WR's on the 53 is RFL worthy. If he listed 4 with 1-2 possibly on PUP that would have been different.
======
Why is this different than listing 11 OL's and then saying that one or two might be on pUP or IR, or LB?
========
He has a reasonable 52 if he would remove one or two of the WR's and add Lowe.
They have to make the 53 to start the year on in-season IR, correct? So, 7 works if he thinks 2 or 3 aren't ready. I agree, though, 5 is more than plenty.

They added a rule last year where 2 guys can go straight to in season IR.
Okay, then 7 is too many for the initial.

I really hope they find a way for Mapu to shine. I think Mayo did him wrong last year. He plays fast and plays hard. I want him to stick around.

Weird that this year's draft class supposedly sucked and there's a near consensus that a bunch of guys will make the 53.

Williams is a small guy who is a rookie. He might play a majority of the passing downs, but he will not play a high percentage of the overall offensive plays. Maybe you are referring to Williams playing a lot on passing downs?

Passing downs are generally 2nd and 3rd downs, so yeah, I expect him to play the majority of downs. You’re right in saying that his size percentiles are low, but they are almost identical to Steve Smith Sr., who played a ton of football, so what that will really come down to is his toughness, and playing outside will make that easier on him. I agree that MacDaniels system is more difficult than most, but dedicated players can still get it, while a guy like Javon Baker likely never will.

Only time will tell how much any of these guys will play, but my money is on the Patriots wanting their most explosive players on the field as much as possible, as that will open up the field for everyone.

Yup, Bruce ran Air Coryell for a year and TB lost. In Y2, Bruce close to step aside (wink, wink), and Brady ran things. There were multiple players saying Brady was telling the TB GM what to do. Of course, Brady won his 7th SB running the NE offense in TB in Y2.

I thought Tampa Bay won the Super Bowl in Brady’s first year there?

What actually sucked was that the top 10 was weaker than most years, especially at QB. In terms of the depth, balance, and overall quality of the draft class it was excellent, and that became more obvious as the draft drew near, 7 round mocks started coming out, and those messing with them saw the caliber of players still around on day 3. That guys like Farmer, Woodson, and Swinson were still available took the Patriots draft from very good to great imo, all 3 will stick, and should end up becoming valuable players for them.

No one remembers 2020
7-9 comparable to the last 2 seasons.. wasn't all that bad..

I feel the difference with last season is for example Polk was taken in the 2nd round by virtue of his coach in college being on the team here... and mayo having no real connections outside of bro hugs... Polk played well in college but it hasn't transitioned yet into the NFL. Vrabel targeted guys that will be more than likely translate to the NFL easier.. farmer, Williams, Swinson, Campbell.. we all know the buzz chism is creating not even being drafted.

In a sense, this is somewhat irrelevant. Personally, I don't see a reason to try to stash two of our WR;s on IR for a month. Of course, if one of our 53 is injured and we want to keep him, he will be put on IR. That isn't special to WR's.

If one or two of our IR's are PUP eligible that is a different thing entirely. Given our WR corps, any such player should indeed be put on IR (at the cut or one the next day, no matter).
=======
In any case, we basically have a final 51. Players in the last couple of spots (at any position) end up being cut or put on IR so that new players can be added.

Hollins had a shoulder injury late last season in Buffalo, and likely that may be the issue he's probably still addressing it. Unless it's something else.

So the if he ends up not being able to go whenever camp starts he'll be on PUP. He's a veteran and played for Josh before so knowing the offense wouldn't be an issue for him.

It's the other guys like Chism, Boutte for example that are hungry and will be chomping at the bit to make the team. So as we've seen in many if instances over the years guys we presume are locks sometimes may not end up being so for different reasons. Injury, or simply a numbers game. Happens all over the NFL.

Getting rid of one of the stupidest rules in sports, that to use IR on a player who could return, you had to cut a healthy player.
Agreed. for example Adrian Phillips was cut when mayo took over but Jacque Jackson was added to the IR. Then presumably cut late last season. Phillips could have helped last season on defense especially when Dugger and peppers went out.
