This is good news:

Source: Adrian Wilson expected to be ready for start of offseason | ChatPats.com

Also, the Pats don't have to cut him until roster cut downs to save the 1.2 million.

I've been reading a lot about Achilles tears, and it leads me to believe that both Wilson AND Wilfork were hurting before the tendon went. I'm also under the impression that hte procedure and rehab is improving dramatically on this type of surgery (much like it did with ACLs recently).

Hopeful for Wilson and Wilfork, and wouldn't that solve a couple of problems?

For some reason everyone seemed to want to cut this guy, but not me. I am a big fan. I noticed that in the preseason he was laying some heavy wood. This guy is a Big Time hitter; just what the Patriots need. Hopefully he will be 100% this season.

100% agree - and what does it say about him that he is working so hard to be ready for OTAs?

I'm picturing him and Collins eating up the middle of the field next year...or swarming into the backfield for lunch.

I sincerely hope the Pats do enough at the position in the offseason to cut him and Gregory.

1 and what does it say about him that he is working so hard to be ready for OTAs?

Not much in terms of football value.

If I recall correctly, O-T-I-S was inspiring young guys by doing a lot of stadiums in the heat of summer the off-season after his playing career (certainly his Patriots career) ended.

Definition: "(Doing a) stadium" is running up all the stairs in a stadium.

I sincerely wish that someone had an answer as to what they might do, exactly.

Donte Whitner? Won't come cheap - if so, why would he leave San Francisco?

Jarius Byrd? Likely tagged by Buffalo.

T.J. Ward? Likely tagged by Cleveland.

So where's the cavalry, Captain?

The Pats have 5 safeties on the team right now - I don't expect one in the draft.

All speculation for now and the draft has some excellent prospects.

Adrian Wilson has not had a good season since 2009 and has now missed a full season and will be 35 if we are waiting on him to be the play maker at Safety its going to be a really long season, I say the guy retires if not he will and should be cut

I think its all about expectations. Is he going to be the All Pro SS he was back in Arizona? No, but I don't think that is why he is here. I think if he can come back healthy he can be a very valuable role player, not as a deep safety, but as an in the box safety or coverage LBer. He could/should be a sub package specialist that can give us an athletic and physical presence over the middle. I don't think he has enough left in him to be a full time starter, but I would like to give him a shot in camp to see if he can contribute. He isn't on big money and the cap savings for cutting him before June are minimal, so keep him around and see what he can do before discarding him. Like with Wilfork he wouldn't stop me from trying to improve the position, but I want to see whats there before cutting him loose.

You certainly could be right - Achilles = bad.

But he got himself right back in shape and says he wants to play again. The guy is a physical beast.

But yeah, doesn't mean he can go, but wouldn't it be a good thing if he could?

And I suppose we could draft a safety...but a rookie is a rookie and the clock is ticking.

If he has anything left, we'll keep him, certainly through camp.

IMHO, that is extremely unlikely. In fact, I think that we should probably cut him before OTA's so as to not risk an injury.

What? Why would you cut a guy before OTAs to not risk an injury? If he is cut or injured and out for the year, you are in the same boat.

Let me be clearer.

If Wilson is deemed to have nothing left, we should not welcome him to OTA's. The cost if we cut him now is about $1M less than if we wait for him to be injured.

If a player is hurt in camp or otas can they thus demand to be put on ir and thus get their salary? If so yes very risky to have oldsters with high salaries (like wilfork) participate.

This could also be nothing more than posturing from Wilson and his agent, to let the other possible teams know that he'll be ready to go in the spring.

Adrian Wilson didn't sound too confident about his chances of returning when he answered the question a month or so ago.

I'm in agreement with the OP that it would obviously help the situation if he's able to produce. I expect them to be preparing Harmon for the starting role opposite of McCourty, while addressing the depth via low level free agency + another draftee myself.

If Wilson works out, all the better, but I hardly think we'll be dependent upon it.

Jarius Byrd? Likely tagged by Buffalo.

I definitely agree that thinking that Byrd will be tagged 2 yrs in a row is speculative at best. One would assume that they'd want to come to a longer term deal if they intend on keeping him, rather than pay 13-14m in guaranteed money in cap hits for two years of services.

Then again, it probably wouldn't matter anyway, since the odds of us pursuing him may not be too good.

Lots of uncertainty for us at the position of safety though, and that's even IF Belichick feels that Harmon is ready to take over the starting role.

Ready to do what, exactly? Get cut from the roster?

Not to be excessively glib, but the guy couldn't run at all when he played in preseason last year. I don't see him making the team.

Unless he takes what Rodney took when he got here, he won't even make the team. Dude was washed up years ago.
