The Patriots could have held onto him until final cuts without paying him more money, so he probably requested to be released now while there’s more cap room out there waiting to be spent.

Dwayne Allen had a bonus due if the Pats kept him on the roster, which forced his release early. J-Mac has the same thing next year. That’s the way to do it.
