2027 Draft: Cornerback

Lance Zierlein on Jalen Mayo of Houston

Cory Kinnen says the scouting agencies have high grades on him but doesn't specify how high.

I sense early binky time.

Running throgh some mocks where I take Chris Cole in the first. However, every time I'm only left with the following options at CB: Vicari Swain, Chris Peal, Jamari Sharpe, Jalen Mayo. I don't know how I feel about that. I like Peal but he still has to prove some things. I like how twitched up Swain is but I'm not convinced he's an outside guy. I really like Jalen Mayo but he's making a big step up in quality so there's still big questions.

Only Leonard Moore was better in man coverage grade than OJ Frederique. Well technically Evan Johnson was but only by .1 of a point so I'm calling them even.

The CB options are really up in the air between prospects like Frederique, Hampton, Zabien Brown, Kelley Jones and Pollock. Will be a fun battle for CB3 this year.

Take with caution, but OJ Frederique might be the guy to separate himself from the current CB3 log-jam.

Just a quick post highlighting FSU corner Ja'Bril Rawls' speed. He could have done better with a block at the end but just look at how smooth and instantly quick rawls (no 30) is.

Trevor Sikkema on Kelley Jones - "he might be the best cover corner in this draft outside of Leonard Moore".
Connor Rogers said he was the most fun tape he watched.

Just listening to them, if we end up looking for a first round corner, it's between Zabien Brown, Kelley Jones and Ashton Hampton.

Brice Pollock is exclusively a zone corner as are Jamari Sharpe and Chris Peal (although Rogers thinks Peal can be a man coverage corner). OJ Frederique has a lot to prove still - still raw.

Elijah Green, Tulsa
6-2, 195

Green is a true junior so maybe for shopping for a move to a bigger school rather than entering the draft. However, he had an 80.8 coverage grade last year with 5 INTs and 8 PBUs. He has press man reps but is mostly a zone cover corner. Good size though.

Put on 10lbs and coverage safety him.

Not a bad idea but he's a corner with good size and what looks to be pretty flexible hips. If he runs well enough, keep him at corner. I think the safety transition thing either happens if he doesn't run under 4.5 or he pulls a McCourty and just can't prove himself to be good enough in man coverage. Green is fine, he just didn't do it a huge amount (72 snaps).

With Gonzo drama and Carlton Davis being older we may need to keep an eye on the top CB's in this draft.
Ellis Robinson and Zabien Brown and two elite CB's that play in one of the two best conferences in the country.
The WR's they will face will be a good test.

Deep draft for CB's. I'm thinking he'll go 5th round or later. I'm still pissed we didn't get Demmings but Prunty is looking like he may be a fit.

Fun fact.

Kelley Jones allowed only 11 catches all last year. He also had 11 passes defended (PBUs and INTs).
Don't forget those long-ass arms of his as well. He's sticky in coverage. It will be nightmare trying to get over the top of him.

Ellis Robinson IV is smooth like Gonzo. Will probably go top 20.
