2026 Draft: EDGE

What's impressive about the speed move around the LT is that Bain is 273#. As Doug Farar notes, moves like a 240# speed rusher.

I'm torn between Bain and Faulk, would still take Peter Woods above either, would would be ecstatic with any of the above.

I think Faulk may be more of a 5T or interior guy rather than a pass rushing 4-3 DE. Bain has the better ability to bend the edge. However, Faulk's athleticism and length is very appealing. Bain gets the edge for me (pun intended) because he's better at getting the edge. Faulk is close behind though.

I do wonder whether Faulk and White have too much in common.

Bain is just a flat out beast. Huge lower body, impressive power and crazy bend for that type of frame. Equally good against the run and in the pass rush, fantastic motor. Miami has a couple other edge guys that look pretty good too, but Bain is just a physical freak. Notre Dame's tackles aren't amazing, but Wagner is regarded as one of the better RT in college football and while Knapp doesn't have a lot of length, he's a hard-nosed player who might get beat off the second move but very rarely gets completely dominated. Bain made both of them look silly on Sunday.

As Manx noted, Bain plays with exceptional violence and intensity The poster boy for what Vrabel and company are preaching.

Likely top 10 pick if he keeps it up, barring injury.

Just a thought on Keldric Faulk. One of his most common comps is Mykel Williams, based upon size, athleticism, ability against the run with pass rushing upside and there were plenty of rumours the Pats liked him a lot. So maybe there's a possibility there.

I was running a mock draft on PFF who have us picking at 13 and all the favourites were off the board (Parker, Faulk, Bain, Downs, Woods, Fano, Tyson) so I started thinking about who the next man up is as far as pass rushers go and who could ascend to the middle of the first round by the time the draft rolls around.

I'm not going to include LT Overton who, at 283lbs, is more of a tweener and I don't necessarily think fits the Patriots profile.

Not in order of preference.

David Bailey, Texas Tech, 6-3,250

Virtually unstoppable as a pass rusher. he had a 46.5% pass rush win rate on true pass sets last year for Stanford. Elite first step explosion and great bend. However, he is not a run defender at all to the point where Stanford took him off the field for run downs. Still, I can see a scenario where he puts up Mike Green/James Pearce Jr numbers and gets boosted into the first round.

R Mason Thomas, Oklahoma, 6-2,240

An early favourite for a Manxman binky. I just love his ability to close to the QB, the like of which I've rarely seen. However, his profile is very much that of David Bailey as a designated pass rusher rather than an every down player. And at only 6-2, 240lbs, I think it less likely he gets a first round boost. Ashton Gillette, Princely Umanmielen and Josaiah Stewart all fell to the third round last year so perhaps that's where he ends up.

Cashius Howell, Texas A&M, 6-4,245

One of my favourite options to be "prospect who rises up to first rounder at draft time". Howell was arguably A&M's best pass rusher last year ahead of Shemar Stewart and Nic Scourton. He's going to have to prove he's worthy as an every down player this year. He could do with adding 5-10lbs though.

Joshua Josephs, Tennessee, 6-3, 245lbs

Length for days with his 34.5" arms and 82" wingspan which might explain why he's more of an edge setter and run defender than pass rusher at this point but he has the length and athleticism to change that. He led all college pass rushers last year with a 91.4 run defense grade. With a productive pass rushing season, he has first rounder written all over him.

Anto Saka, Northwestern, 6-4, 255

Ideal size and length for the Vrabel DE/OLB role and I have to say, in limited watching, one of my favourites as an ideal Vrabel type. Excellent power and ability to run stunts although I'm not sure he has the athletic traits to jump to the first round. also, only 400 total career snaps is something that needs to be examined. Early favourite for a round two pick for me right now if we go to another position in round one. Thanks to @Clonamery and @mayoclinic for the heads up on him.

Dani Dennis-Sutton, Penn State, 6-5, 272lbs

A little bigger than the possible Vrabel archetype, but it's hard to ignore the latest offering from Pass Rush U. Especially when, in the first game of this season, he racks up 5 tackles, 3 TFLs, 2 forced fumbles, a sack and a pass defended in one game. I don't know if you've seen Bull Durham where'Meat' tells Kevin Costner he wants "to announce my presence with authority" A stat line like that does exactly that. Don't bet against a Penn State edge rusher.

Patrick Payton, LSU, 6-5, 250

Another I'll be following closely this year now that he's moved to LSU following a down year at Florida State (but didn't everyone at that program have a down year?). LSU are possibly the best defense in CFB this year. Will we go to that well again?

There are others I'll get too in time like Tyreak Sapp and Matayo Uiagalelei who I think are less ideal Vrabel fits but these are the EDGE guys I think could jump into first round consideration.

Anto Saka speed to power

Anto Saka inside moves and a stunt.

Anthony Hill Jr, Texas, 6-3, 238lbs

Yes, this is in the right thread. Hear me out.

I was looking at a mock draft from The Draft Network which had us taking Hill ahead of Bain and Fano and I was considering starting the 'Mock Draft Fail' thread because of it. A linebacker ahead of those two? No thanks!

But I've since evaluated for a number of reasons.

1. I've just seen Matt Miller's top 5 positional rankings and he has Hill as his no1 edge rusher.

2. He has 8 sacks and 42 pressures in two seasons whilst primarily playing as an off ball linebacker.

3. In 80 snaps as an edge rusher, he has 11 pressures.

4. Two words. Jalon Walker. A potential linebacker to EDGE convert, one who's linebacker instincts were called into question but who had the athleticism and explosion to project to edge rusher. He was also one of two other players not named Will Campbell that the Patriots were linked to as possible first round picks.

5. ESPN considers him the 2nd best player in CFB.

6. Play 3 in the 2nd video below where he leaves a LT clutching at air.

I'm not ready to nominate him as a pick ahead of Bain, Faulk or Fano but if we're picking in the mid first next year and those players are gone, I think getting a very athletic productive player would be no bad thing. Yes I think we'll need to feed him some burgers to get him up to 245lbs at least and he'll probably not be an every down edge rusher, but have him be a run and hit linebacker to compliment the more disciplined Spillane that elevates to EDGE rusher on passing down.

I no longer think he would be a draft fail.

In that scenario, I'd be thrilled.

I had Hill on my first Watch List post from late April.

Intriguing for all the reasons mentioned.

Wouldn't take him in the top 15 yet, nor ahead of Downs, Woods, Bain, Faulk or Fanu at this juncture.

Not sure I'd take him over Sonny Styles (who I believe goes before Hill at #9 overall in the mock Manx referenced).

But definitely intriguing. Not a fail.

Patrick Payton

Payton's length and hand strength are really tempting. Rare to see hands that heavy on a guy with such long levers. Really tough for tackles to recover from the initial punch and he can push and pull them all day, it just isn't something many guys can handle on an island and it really makes him sound in the running game. This is a really good Edge class.

This might end up being a good prediction.
