He’s got some tools, but you better be damn sure you aren’t throwing away a top 3 pick for the sake of stocking up picks and going with someone you think is the guy.
There is no sure thing at QB. McCarthy has a lot of tools. The risk of trading back too far is that you might not get him.

If you can trade back to 8 for example, and pick up another 2nd and a future 1st, it is nice insurance against McCarthy flopping or being scooped by another team.

If he is gone, we still get a great prospect at 8 along with the extra goodies.

In that case maybe we take someone like Rattler in the 2nd.

I like the idea of double dipping at QB anyway.

We all know the negatives about McCarthy. Not much of a sample to go on since he was in a run heavy offense. I was not overly impressed with him in Playoff games. But he is only given a chance to throw every now and then where he cannot really get into a rhythm.
What I like about McCarthy is his Arm strength and velocity. He has above average wheels also. 6-3 but skinny. Has played in cold weather. His arm fits cold weather. High level of Competition. Pro Offense.
If he is rated close to Daniels I am all in at moving down to 8 and getting extra Capitol and taking McCarthy
As you said extra 1st next year could be insurance

I don't know, when you have NFL super geniuses drafting Zach Wilson and Trey Lance 2-3 in the draft, who knows?

It was a play on words, hence the tongue sticking out, and not a serious comment.

Draft McCarthy at 8? Are you nuts? I’d rather them keep the pick select one of the 3 QBs,
If you wanted to trade back fine. But take a better player and draft McCarthy or Nix at 34. You are overestimating McCarthy quite a bit.
Cousin, I agree to take a blue chipper at #8 if we get that pick, but the top three QBs are overrated IMHO. Williams is s definite maybe. The other two I would grade as late #1 or #2. I am not sold on McCarthy. Rattler might have the best arm and he might be a third rounder.
The smart move is a FA or trade and build the pieces at WR or OL. Look what the Panthers did and they are screwed. Kid might turn out OK but how many years and can he get rid of the shell shock.
The monkey see monkey do mentality of the NFL is incredible. . The all hope for Stroud now.

"There have been 38 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2011, the year the NFL changed the collective bargaining agreement to set a wage scale for rookie deals, making it extremely affordable to draft a quarterback," he began. "These 38 first-round quarterbacks have made a total of 1,909 starts. Their record? 1034-1035-7. Almost exactly break-even."

"Only one of those 38 quarterbacks led their team to a Super Bowl victory: Patrick Mahomes," Sharp reported. "Of these 38 quarterbacks, 10 are still on their rookie deal, so set them aside. Of the other 28, only 11 (39%) were even given a second deal with the team that drafted them. Most were cut or saw their rookie deals expire."

What this might tell you is poopy Teams go all in for a quick turn around with a shinny new QB in round one. Couisins, we are now one of the poopy Teams. Let's not fall into that QB stat.

So you want to put all your chips in the middle of the table for a "franchise" QB while the rest of your roster is Swiss cheese? You are right about a QB at #8 or #11 or #12 when you can get a future yellow jacket perhaps in Alt or a Bowers (Mark Andrews?) or a bevy of WR and another pick or two,

Be very wary of the top three QBs.

Interesting. This is the first instance I remember anyone having McCarthy as their QB1.

39% getting a second contract is very high. I bet It's much, much lower after the 1st round.

Since 2011 the SB winning QB
Rogers(1st)
Eli(1st)
Flacco(1st)
Peyton(1st)
Mahomes 3x(1st)
Stafford (1st)

Outliers: Brady 4x, Foles(rd 3), Wilson (rd 3)

12 out of 14 were Brady or a first round pick. 3 of them were #1 overall picks.

Since 2003 the first team all pro QB has been Brady, Drew Brees (1x-drafted top of round 2) and then ONLY 1st round QB's.

Those are all very telling and a very high percentage.
Your odds of drafting a SB winning QB after round 1 are extremely low.
You should probably draft a QB in the first round EVERY year based on this info. (Assuming you have 1 rated a first rounder when you pick)

Could McCarthy surge to the point where we don’t dare trade down, and take him at #3?

Glad we have guys with a proven track record of QB evaluation on board.

The offensive FAs are weak. The TEs are OK, Cousins might be an option at QB depending on cost, but the WRs and OTs are disappointing. Better to sign top defensive players in FA and draft all offense. BPA is the only way forward in a rebuild. Don't reach in the draft or in FA. We have to draft QB, OT, and WR. The FA options are way over priced. If we reach in FA it is cutting off our nose to spite our face.
Henry is OK?

I guess that you will indeed be disappointed with the other available free agents.

The few remaining good offensive FAs might be tagged. If that happens there are no WRs or OTs to speak of. We do not want to overbid.

Henry is OK. There is Schultz and Fant too. One of those with a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Henry was OK but does have a history of injuries like Parker, so not the most dependable. Gesicki was very average, limited blocking, but might be OK with a better QB.

Proof that Chad Reuter is getting worse and worse by the year. One of the worst mocks ever.

Ive jokingly said this before but wholeheartedly mean it now, but if they trade the 3 for Fields and #9, I’m no longer a Patriots fan.

For me, it is clear that the very best free agents for us in the draft are our own free agents, not including Trent Brown. I do thnik that we can find a free agent safety that will help the team and obviously a QB. I suspect that we will need to trade for a WR if we want one, in addition to signing Bourne.

We can draft a WR. This is a rebuild.

The dropoff from Onwenu to Sow is not much, and not worth the FA dollars which can be spent to fill a real hole like FS or tall press corner. Same applies to Duggar, save the FA dollars for a greater need as we have Mapu behind Duggar with not much of a dropoff.

Dugger with an E was one of the most spectacular players in the NFL the prior year, with a hand in multiple defensive touchdowns, whether Pick 6s, causing fumbles for TDs or picking them up and running them in.

He's the type of player who will go to a contender and become an All-Pro.

Sorry for the misspelling.

Yes I agree that Duggar is very good. My point is that Mapu might be great too, and I prefer Mapu and Winfield Jr. to Duggar and J Mills.

I suppose that we can try for WR's in the 4th or 5th. I certainly hope that we sign Bourne and Reager.

COMPETING FOR ROSTER SPOTS
Bourne, Douglas, Shuster, Carter, Reager, Thornton, a late draftee or two, and a minor draftee or two.

Under your scenario, I would think that the early draft would need to focus on a QB, two or three OT's and a backup RB.
