yeah but i mean outside CB looks like a way bigger need than Safety or Nickelback with Williams, Mills, Bryant all look more like inside guys than outside
Well I wouldn’t expect the reason to trade for a rookie drafted in the 5th round is to fill an immediate starting need.
Gilmore and JC are on the outside with Mills and Williams behind them.

I did not mean to imply starting need just bigger need in the secondary than inside..Maybe it's because he can provide depth there so that we can move Williams or Mills to the outside if Gilmore or Jackson are out

I don’t think he was traded for to fill a role.
I think he was traded for because he’s a good football player who will help at least on special teams and eventually at whatever spot he grows into. This isn’t for week 1, it’s for the future

This could be an important reason

for depth at Safety,Nickelback, Slot Corner yeah but for an outside cb idk...he struggled there a lot at OSU, he was damn good inside especially the slot, and is a good tackler, he covered Devonta Smith on Slants really well if i remember the game right
He played his last year with Turf toe. And despite that, according to his draft profile, he still made DB of the year in the Big 10..

understand the future comment, … BUT it still seems strange to trade (not just one, but TWO) draft pick for such a ‚potential ‚ when it seems like it is a really really hard cutdown to 53 already. How do they find space (and it seems they must, cause you don’t give up picks to try and slip someone onto the PS. )?

could this point to something anyway in week1?, like say Gilly starting year on IR?
(or worst case -holding out /traded?)

And despite all that Wade fell from the first round to the fifth round of the draft..I guess mostly due to his switch from inside to outside CB but his injury could be a big reason as well

Because this guy (and why BB is willing to give up 2 picks) intrigues me, I tried to find some draft profiles:

but didn’t see any mention of turf toe, but rather motivation or unknown outside issues ???

did BGC weigh in on this guy?

Schaum Wade, CB, Ohio State – NFL Draft Player Profile

Shaun Wade is the Swiss army knife of this NFL Draft at cornerback, but his stock rise will follow how he performs playing on the outside.

ByDalton Miller
March 21, 2021

Find somebody that loves you as much as Ohio State loves producing first-round cornerbacks in the NFL Draft. Since the 2016 NFL Draft, the Buckeyes boast six in the last five drafts. Although we’ve seen mixed results from the talent once they ascend to the NFL level, it’s difficult to make a case for a more prolific school at developing high-end talent in the secondary. Shaun Wade was meant to be Ohio State’s next NFL Draft darling. Where does his stock sit after a problematic season?

Shaun Wade NFL Draft Profile

  • Position: Cornerback
  • School: Ohio State
  • Year: Redshirt Junior
  • Height: 6’0 5/8?
  • Weight: 192 pounds

Tony Pauline’s Shaun Wade Scouting Report

Positives: Physically talented cornerback who shows a physical nature to his game, mixes it up with receivers, and stays on the opponent’s hip out of breaks. Effectively brackets receivers over the middle of the field with safeties, displays a closing burst, and swiftly gets to the ball.

Consistently gets his head back around to locate the pass in the air. Forces the action upfield when focused on his game. Effectively defends the run or screen passes. Strong and easily brings opponents down at the point of attack.

Negatives: Shows a lot of hesitation in his game. Played with a nonchalant attitude last year, seemed as though he was going half-speed, and gave up on plays rather easily. Inefficient and takes too many steps getting to the action.

Analysis: When breaking down Wade I saw two players on film. The first was a potentially dominant cornerback with the ability to shut down opponents with physicality as well as ball skills. The other prospect, and the one most prominent last year, played like an undrafted free agent that looked like he’d rather be elsewhere than the football field.

Shaun Wade Player Profile

Shaun Wade is an NFL Draft prospect that high school recruiting rankers can hang their hat on. During the recruiting process, he was a consensus five-star recruit among the three big recruiting sites. He was also a top-25 overall recruit in all three.

Wade was named the 2017 Lockheed Martin Defensive Back of the Year after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. His Trinity Christian Academy squad ran the table in his high school career, winning four straight state titles in Florida.

He was seemingly destined for greatness. He found playing time as a redshirt freshman in a secondary that boasted Kendall Sheffield, Jeffrey Okudah, and Damon Arnette is a testament to his ability and work ethic. It didn’t take long into his redshirt sophomore season for the draft hype to get to the heights of first-round “lock” as a slot cornerback that the masses believed could transition to the outside.

When Wade returned to Ohio State for his redshirt junior season, presumably, it was to get that much-needed experience on the outside. For a while, that plan was put in jeopardy by the ongoing worldwide circumstances. Wade opted out to focus on the NFL Draft. However, he didn’t sign with an agent and was then able to opt back in once the Big Ten resumed play.

Difficult season sees NFL Draft stock sink

If the expectation was that Wade would improve his NFL Draft stock in 2020, he fell short of expectation. Considerably short. It’s difficult to imagine that any prospect clouded their profile more than he did. The question mark over his ability to play outside was answered negatively. Both Ty Fryfogle (Indiana) and Jahan Dotson (Penn State) gave him nightmares that may well live with him forever.

Following the national championship defeat to Alabama, Shaun Wade intimated that he might return to Ohio State rather than declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. However, he ultimately made the decision to declare in mid-January. He leaves NFL teams with a substantial headache over his projection to the next level.

Shaun Wade NFL Draft best fits

There’s not a team in existence that couldn’t use more cornerbacks on their roster. Prior to the season, Wade’s versatility — from plugging the C gap against the run to playing outside corner to spinning back and playing safety angles like a natural — would have made him a desirable commodity for all 32 NFL teams. It will affect someone on the bottom of the 53. Wade is a good special teams player do he makes the team just on that.
This move doesn’t say anything about Gilmore because they make it regardless of Gilmore’s status.

Maybe King, Bolden? Slater to retire (as mentioned by others)?

Let me clarify. Yes if you add a player who makes the 53 someone gets cut.
No this move is not a harbinger that we had to go get this guy to replace someone.

I was kinda just hoping for a Dre Kirkpatrick or Quinton Dunbar signing, or maybe a Gareon Conley workout...

The reason that this guy was still available after the 4th round is because he was Exposed as an Outside CB last season at Ohio State.

Outside CB is Still our biggest weakness in the defensive secondary, and Wade does Nothing to help alleviate that weakness.

And there goes Little Billy, doing solids for our enemies again...And does he have Any ****ing concept of Depreciation at all?

I did a search "Shaun Wade Draft Profiles" and "Shaun Wade Turf Toe".

Here is just one of many articles on Wade having turf toe in 2020:

While the one draft profile you had mentioned an attitude issue, the other sites didn't. So you have to question the legitimacy of the whole "attitude issue" claims. Especially when taken against the following from NFLDraftScout.com :

After the draft he listed all of the factors he believed contributed to his underwhelming performance - turf toe, a knee injury, deaths in the family. Yet he also acknowledged the disconnect between reputation and results - and the only remaining path forward

EDIT: The one thing that I stands out t me in several of the profiles is that he's listed as an excellent tackler.

It’s the system. Rbs will never play every snap. They define roles to not wear them out. Harris and Michel COMBINED played 43% of them last year.
Michels role was to be the lead RB. In 2018 he played 28.6% of the snaps. He played in heavy run/pass ratio situations and others played when there were more pass heavy.

He played 320 snaps and carried the ball on 209. That was his role and others played on more pass heavy downs.

181 of his 209 carries were on 1st down or 2nd and less than 6 or 3rd and less than 4.

The Patriots don’t believe in one rb playing all of the different roles.
Sure, I get all of that.

I see Sony as James White 2.0, with a running upgrade.

I'm just expressing my opinion. which, on this board, seems to be an invitation to fight (not talking about you).

So, in saying I really like Sony, apparently, makes me a Bill homer because that's the only reason I would defend him, but at the same time saying I hate the Sony trade seems to indicate that I'm a Bill hater, or think I know more than him.

Is this really what a fan page for a football team should look like, I wonder? Again, not aiming this at you.

I remember him tackling Najee Harris open field which is quite impressive for a college db imo, I think the fundamentals for S or inside are there, at least ST
