The Patriots are good at getting long term deals done when they really want the player and i think that will be the case here, they will find a way to keep Revis unless he decides he wants to go back out and get a ridiculous deal, and while that is possible it is also very possible that he loves playing here and signs a long term deal with the patriots, and the big increases in the cap make that more likely.

I thought it was a one year contract with an option for a year two. if you do not exercise an option you do not "cut" as he is not under contract. If he was under contract for next year his SB would need to be amoritized over both years and it is not. all the pats have is first dibs at paying him 20 mill for next year and for that they are giving him 5 mill dollars if they choose not to..

I have no problem with a one year affordable show-me year - especially when it comes to Revis. It's smart of Belichick to give him a HUGE incentive to behave and produce.

The second year (IMO) is simply a way to give Revis what he was likely asking for - a "no franchise tag" agreement - without actually giving him one. Thus Belichick avoids setting that precedent and Revis knows he either re-negotiates or hits the market.

The bottom line is Revis' value is dependent on his play and behavior. Again, not a bad thing.

While some feel we should have spent $12 million to tag Talib, who has hip issues and has never played a full season, I'm fine with spending the same $12 million on Revis, a better player with a better track record of staying on the field.

It really comes down to what you'd rather have -

1.) The best CB in FA who has played 16 games 5 out of 7 years signed to a 1 year $12 million deal?

2.) The 2nd best CB in FA who has played 16 games 0 out of 7 seasons for 6 years $57 million.

I know which Belichick prefers. I'm thinking Elway might be having second thoughts himself.

I am not sure what of what I posted you are arguing with. I would have paid Revis $15M a year for three years (with whatever he wanted on the fake years) if he would have taken it with lots more than $12M guaranteed.

I would not have paid Talib anywhere near what he got from Denver.

With the cap projected to be above $140m next year. That leaves a TON {$50m} of flexibility for Bill to work on an extension with Revis.

2 years at 16 per (what he was making), with 7 the first year, 25 the second.

You can franchise him after that for 2 more years, I would expect. I don't know what the CB market will look like at the end of next year, but if the cap does escalate another 10-15 next year, it's going to be huge, I think, since Richard Sherman is likely setting it.

If there is one FO I have no problem with their cap management it's the Patriots. They know what they are doing. Let them go about their business.

Think of it as if we're getting his previous deal for two years and can put 11 of his 16 million into next year's cap hit.

It gives the Pats flexibility. If the cap goes up as expected, it's probably worth it. If not, we got him for a year at THIS year's franchise price. That doesn't suck.

Is it certain that they will not receive a comp pick? They will not be cutting Revis, only declining to pick up his option. It may seem like a trivial point, but didn't this come up a few years back with Donte Stallworth? Pats didn't pick up his option and he counted in the comp picks. At least that is how I remember it anyway...
