Re: Lofa Tatupu is about to be released.

I am happy w/ our D-line

I like Deaderick and sense a better year and he may make a huge impact as a DE in a 4-3 v. a 3-4

Re: Lofa Tatupu is about to be released.

I like Spikes as a player, but he has his weaknesses. I like the physicality, leadership, emotion, and swagger he brings to the defense, and he's pretty good at taking on lineman, but he's more suited for a 3-4 defense in the NFL.

If we are going to play more 4-3 this year, Spikes will be exposed. Playing MLB in a 4-3 in college is way different than the NFL, even if he played in the SEC.

I don't know about Tatupu's injury status/history or how he played last year, but I remember him being an absolute force a few years ago in a few games I saw. He had a ton of tackles and seemed like a really smart player.

I remember the announcers talking about how he was very studious and disciplined in preparation for games and how he often knew what play the opponent was running based on the down/distance and the formation they came out with. Seemed like he was the QB of that defense because I remember him calling a lot of audibles based on what the offense was doing.

Always thought he'd be a great fit in NE. Seems like a Belichick-type of LB. A guy that sees the game in ways other LB's don't. A guy that can read and react better than most. A guy Belichick can rely on to be a coach-on-the-field like Bruschi/Vrabel/McGinest were.

There's no reason to not take a shot on this guy. He's probably not going to get a huge deal from anyone. Give him a one year deal like Bodden and see how it goes. Low risk, high reward. If it doesn't work out, no big deal. When healthy, he's probably better than all of our LB's besides Mayo.

A front 7 with Wilfork, Haynesworth, Cunningham, Mayo, Spikes, and a healthy Tatupu would be the best front 7 we've had since the core front 7 from the championship years broke up after 08.

Re: Lofa Tatupu is about to be released.

I don't see any reason to break up the projected starting group of Mayo-Spikes-Guyton, but the Pats do need some veteran 4-3 LB presence on the team.

Re: 75% of Top 80 Free Agents already signed

Braylon Edwards and Malcolm Floyd are still out there.I am surprise that they are still out there.Floyd is a big wr ala Plaxico.

Stylez G. White anyone?

Meanwhile the FA pool is shrinking.
Stylez G. White FA DE that can rush the passer. 6'3" 270 lbs. How does 24.5 sacks in four years sound!!!!!! Does not that make him interesting to the Pats? Familiar in the 4-3 if we are doing both.
The Bucs are still wanting him to resign.
Thoughts?

Re: Stylez G. White anyone?

For once, we agree. Very under-rated player. Good run-stopper too.

Re: Stylez G. White anyone?

He has yet to re-sign with the Bucs. Note that the Bucs have mondo cap room whereas we don't.

Re: Stylez G. White anyone?

And according to PFF, he's pretty much the best player ever. Wins all around.

In all seriousness, though, I do like him.

Do you guys really think he is worthy it at the age of 32?

Bargain Hunting?

Any second tier players that you think may be brought in?

2011 NFL Free Agents

Some random names, looks like JAG soup
Matt Roth, Justin Harrell, Shawn Ellis, Jimmy Kennedy, Le Kevin Smith !!!
Heath Evans

Re: Bargain Hunting?

What's the story with Mark Anderson? He made a big impact as a rookie but seems to have done nothing since.

Re: Bargain Hunting?

If we're going to continue with the 3-4, I'm not sure why we wouldn't give Ellis a look.

Same goes for Roth.

If we're really serious about this 4-3 as a base defense thing, then I think the roster would be close to set. Signing Harris would make some sense as depth, but normally we don't wait to sign guys long after they visit.

Re: Bargain Hunting?

I think we are done. Signed our own FA's, traded for two big names, and lots of new draft choices added. I'd be shocked if anything new was added (of substance). This is your 2011 Patriots. Hopefully they are a great team.

Re: Bargain Hunting?

I still think we will get a last minute DL at the final cutdown from someone like the Eagles or Lions. They have way too many DL to keep them all.

I wouldn't mind someone like Lawrence Jackson in a trade with Detroit for Wilhite who is unlikely to make the team because of his salary increase.

Re: Bargain Hunting?

i'd like to bring Roth in and see what he can do for us. I think he would be a great add

I agree with bringing in Roth or another body to compete for a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE position. Looking at the current depth chart I see, Jermaine C, Markell Carter, Rob Nin, Dane Fletcher and Marques Murell os our OLBs.
