I know the whole story. But seriously look at the people throwing him the ball. The Patriots had no QB effectively as they kept starting guys for 2 or 3 games, then were dissatisfied and would bench them. They had like 4 guys n the rotation. It was a debacle. I'm talking about his numbers.

I understand your point (and its valid), its just not quite as valid as you might recall. In 1985 the Pats had the 14th passing yards per game, in 1986 they were 4th. In those seasons, Fryar was a disappointment, underachiever...

True, good point.

I guess it's the later years, post 1986, where the QB position was one of the worst imaginable.

In 1986, we still thought we had a QB

Irving did well with Grogan and Flutie in there.

I also saw him make some great catches. It's impossible to escape criticism - Brady got a ton of that in this town, most of which I didn't agree with.

Was he as bad as Hill in KC?

Its all relative I guess. Fryar was the first overall pick of the draft, so the stakes were higher. Also, he managed to get in the news a lot, and that was BEFORE cell phone cameras, social media, etc. "As bad" as Hill? I'd say probably worse considering it was much easier to get away with things then. Eason had all the physical tools to be really good, if only he had Grogan's attitude. Eason could have made both Fryar and him much better if he was all in instead of treating it like just a job for now.

This is a good point of view

In March 2019, Hill was investigated for alleged battery after an incident in which his three-year-old son sustained a broken arm. The following month, his son was placed into care temporarily as a result of an emergency hearing conducted by the Kansas Department of Children and Families. On April 24, the Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe released a statement, saying that his office believed a crime had been committed but the evidence did not allow them to conclude the perpetrator, and that the Kansas Department of Children and Families continued to investigate. The following day, an audio recording of Hill and Espinal discussing the injury to their son and the subsequent investigation was released. In the recording that surfaced, Hill and his fiancée discuss their son's broken arm; she says that their son is scared of him, to which Hill responds, "You should be afraid of me too."

Coach Meyer was not in favor of drafting him, but had no say. He was concerned about Tony's toughness. Tony did play through some injuries, but as far as I'm concerned it was for the best because getting him out of there a la Mo Lewis was the only way to get Grogan or Flutie in there (and win).
Eason could have made both Fryar and him much better if he was all in instead of treating it like just a job for now.
I've heard such criticism of Eason and Bledsoe's attitudes, but I don't question their effort.

They simply lack football acumen. Some guys have it, some don't. It's irritating how coaches and media ascribe it to those who do not possess it, due to their physical talent. Equally so how they are blind to it in supposedly less physically gifted quarterbacks who have it in spades.
