Uh, well, I consider Morgan and Fryar over him by a lot. Not sure how I'm moving the goalposts.

All this discussion has proved is that I rate Wes Welker much lower than several of you.

To be clear, I prefer even Edelman to him.
Yeah but Wes still rules, I believe his numbers are HOF worthy.

Using the same criteria which put Terrell Davis in for three good seasons, we could consider putting a lot of guys including Jim Nance in too.

Another guy who comes to mind is Terry Metcalf. He broke Mack Herron's all-purpose yardage record (set by Gale Sayers) in 1975 in only thirteen games.

Fun fact: His RB coach with the Cardinals was Joe Gibbs.

But, I have to point out that Bill Russell got stabbed badly in the arm by his mistress before the seventh game against LA one year.

"Let's see if you can win a championship now!!!" What an angel. Can't blame Russ at all though, as she was just a freak in the sack.

Media made up a story about him getting some inoculations for an upcoming trip to Africa. Of course, the Celtics still won anyway, although it hurt like hell.
Holy **** I never knew that. I knew he had women on the side but wow

Yeah, Russ wasn't alone.

"I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but when the Celtics were on the road in those days, if the hotel burned down they'd have found a lot of extra bodies in the wreckage..."

We can thank his marriage counselor for 1969. Bill wanted to retire then, but the guy advised him to try playing another season, to try to stay together.

Didn't save his marriage, but we got a last, glorious title out of it.

Let’s not forget the combo of Deion Branch and David Givens. I know they aren‘t considered the most talented but they sure were on the same page as Brady. I always wondered what could’ve been if both were resigned.

The only reason you'd even be in the conversation here is because Moss is one of the top 3 WRs of all-time. Welker couldn't hold Morgan's or Fryar's jock in terms of talent.

I like to look at Yards Per Attempt as a means to compare QBs of different eras... Total Yards, Total TD Passes, TD/INT Ratio, Completion % aren't really fair to the older dudes...
Why didn't you?? What I saw was a lot more Int's than TD's... believe his passer rating was something like 69. He was an outstanding runner prior to 1980, but aside from 1986 that skill did not translate all that well.

Yards per attempt 7.5
Adjusted yards per attempt 5.9

FYI in 1986 he had 9 passing TD's and 2 Int's.

Ahh yes. The Grogan to Morgan TD from which I chose my name. I don't know where I read this but its was reported that Grogan said to Stanley in the huddle " Can you get open, or can you beat your guy"" And Stanley said " You bet" This may have lost something in translation over 36 years. That game above all others taught me how much one win could mean.

I prefer Jules as well.

I don't think you can really make an argument for Morgan-Fryar being the best we've had, since Morgan was awesome and Fryar was close to being a bust at WR while he was here. He blossomed very late and then left, which is when he really made his mark. He averaged 38.5 receptions a year and posted one solitary one thousand yard season. He was the number one overall pick...
He was an awesome talent, and just as frustrating while he was here.

His success appears to coincide with the fact that -- as in the game featured in this thread where the Patriots had a 5 to 1 run to pass ratio -- Tony Eason and Bob Bleier were no longer the guys throwing him the ball.

Heck, it's a miracle that Stanley Morgan had the numbers he did.

No, there's a lot more to it. I don't know if you were around back then, but Fryar was always in the news for something other than football:
"Fryar probably has been the Patriots' best athlete since they drafted him No. 1 overall in 1984. Before that, he was probably the best athlete to play at the University of Nebraska. In his first seven seasons with the Patriots, Fryar (6 feet, 200 pounds) showed flashes of brilliance, speed, strength and courage. But the numbers rarely lived up to the potential and neither did the person."

I know the whole story. But seriously look at the people throwing him the ball. The Patriots had no QB effectively as they kept starting guys for 2 or 3 games, then were dissatisfied and would bench them. They had like 4 guys n the rotation. It was a debacle. I'm talking about his numbers.
