Patriots Sign WR Corey Coleman

Todd Haley is a drunken dooch.

Brian Daboll is a sub-standard coordinator.

I think its fair to say Coleman has had ****ty coaching since Day 1.

If anyone can get the most out of him, its BB.

Yeah, but I can't really think of an example of the Pats bringing in a highly drafted receiver that even one team has recently cut (as opposed to someone like Welker that was cut early on and then latched on successfully with the Dolphins) that has ended up making a significant contribution, especially one that has had trouble learning other 6th grade playbooks (compared to the McDaniel/Brady Ph.D. Playbook for the advanced and gifted). Can you or anyone else think of any examples like that?

A very weak and questionable analogy might be Dorsett, who slightly underperformed at Indy compared to his draft position, but even with him he was hardly a wash-out, he gained more than 500 yards his second year at Indy. I think that was more about Indy wanting to snatch Brissett (something that looks like a pretty good move in hindsight) than them wanting to get rid of Dorsett.

I am a bit surprised that the Pats didn't offer a contract that had a second year option just for planning purposes.
He’ll be an RFA, so they basically have a $2 million option for 2019. It makes sense to wait and see if there’s a way to structure it to offset less of the Bills’ $2 million guaranteed, though.

Didn't put him being a RFA together. Now it all makes more sense to me. Thanks for pointing it out.

Welker was a UFA that developed into a good player at MIA which warranted a 2nd rd pick

Chris Hogan was cut 3 times before sticking with BUF. Another UFA turned solid NFL pro.

Jabar Gaffney was cut by HOU and signed by NE

Let me get this straight. The Bills are paying him ($3.5m dead cap hit) to play for us?
$3.5 million minus what the Patriots pay him, due to offsets. With Hoyer, that means minimum salary in 2017 and 2018 while the 49ers are still paying him, but $1.5 million of his salary guaranteed in 2019. For Coleman, it could mean minimum salary in 2018 and 2019 but some guarantees (maybe on a voiding year) in 2020. That can all be sorted out in March, though.

That is why I said "recently cut", someone like Welker was cut originally but was a proven performer when the Pats traded for him.

Had Jabar Gaffney been let loose by Houston when he was signed by NE? If so, that is a good example of a recently cut WR that the Pats turned into a success, thanks!

The overall answer is no...very few high draft choices which were cut went on to have successful careers.

I was mistaken. Gaffney was drafted by HOU in the 2nd rd and they chose not to re-sign him. In 2006, he was a FA and signed by Philly. Philly cut him in TC and NE signed him in Oct 06

So between this year and last, the Pats have tried FIVE first round draft pick WRs. Crazy.

If you want to evaluate his chances you could start by considering the denominator: the number of WRs that have passed through the roster recently. It is truly a "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" strategy. Many players had mid to high draft status or had produced significantly in the NFL and nearly all are out of football. If still optimistic, add a column for production we got from them.
