Because the opposition is playing for that. Josh always called the short intermediate stuff and set up the deep ball.

I don’t agree that you have to be checking down to game breaking guys for it to be sustainable. If it keeps you from falling behind schedule and allows you to move the chains it’s sustainable. Use it to move down the field until you’re in the red zone and then convert, that’s as good as having game breakers. It’s not as easy or flashy so not as big a dopamine hit but at the end of the day it’s about getting on the scoreboard. Keeping drives alive is much more sustainable than the alternative.

Agree. It’s really great to have a game breaker available to check down. It’s a role I think Pop Douglas might play, too.

I’m not talking about home run balls. I’m talking about wr screens on 3rd and 6 and dump off to the rb as the design of the play being a stupid offense with the QB.

Okay, and more than once this week, I heard some talking head cite what great calls those plays were. It's execution. I saw one, I think in the Buffalo game, each player made their block and it was a great play. If we are incapable of running the play then I agree with you, but lets not give up on it after a game one against the Seattle defense on the road. Let's see what happens against the Steelers who have players difficult to block.

Checking down isn’t really a play call thing. It’s a read thing. The play in question Maye was cover 6 and pop was the throw but he didn’t get cover 6 and got picked by a S he never thought would be near the play.
If he read it proper Doubs was the throw.
You can dump to a RB when your #1 progression is open. (Even if due to a misread)
That would be asking a qb to ignore the primary target and see if anyone is covering his RB first, we f’s up the entirely design.
The problem is when you have too many case where your downfield routes are just distractions and the goal of the okay is the throw a 1-2 yard pass.
That short to deep progression fixation is what ruined a bunch of WCO coaches.

If his receivers are covered he has to check down, but you never check down first, unless you have a stupid game plan, which we did, which led to him forcing the few opportunities he had to run plays that weren’t called from fear. McDaniels was afraid of the Seattle D and put hud young stud QB in a position to fail.

The goal is to push the ball downfield not do a long handoff. We score 10 points. We coached scared.
I’m not sure who is telling those are great plays. WR screen in 3rd and 6 is give up and hope. Once in a while it works but it’s the heart of a stupid game plan.

Yep. Ebb is much, much closer to Bledsoe than to Brady; but at least he can escape trouble whereas Bledsoe never could. He also might be on a similar trajectory as Carson Wentz: somebody whose career started strongly as he made plays with both his arms & legs, but injuries & defenses confusing him turned him into a career backup...

“Staying on schedule” “moving the chains” and not making chunk plays on the passing game is the worst offensive strategy that exists. And exactly the opposite of what got us to 14-3 and a SB last year.
