Player Signing Ben Brown and Erick Hunter Signed to the 53

Wasn't aware. Thought they were separate.

So it essentially is the reverse of what we usually see which is guaranteeing money to push cap in the future.
It is what it is. When you released a player all future cap hits for money already paid move forward to the current year. Really a non factor in this case since I doubt we were going to come within 500k of capping out

The one other factor (was alluded to in Pats Unfiltered podcast) was that the 31-waiver wire priority had them in a bit ‘harder to forecast’ position. They needed a mechanism to ensure they could take the successful waivers. [edit: but weren’t sure ANY would pass.] They were lining up vets like this (I assume) IN CASE the waiver wire came thru. 2 did. According to one source they put in AT LEAST 3 waivers, but lost on one [a LB] (1+?).

IF TRUE ….. Makes me wonder, WHO WAS THE THIRD vet who they could cut & bring back as required
Like @ring6 said, I read the Hunter was the third wire claim but the Pats pulled it back because they didn't expect all three claims to pass through because they had the #31 priority. Makes you think that these guys are not highly sought after if no-one claimed them. Hunter was in the Lions preseason camp and the Lions hoped to sign Hunter to their PS, but the Pats put him on their 53, so Hunter chose to come to Foxboro. The Pats did all of this after the 4PM Monday deadline so they did not have to release another veteran (I assume Hunter waited for the Pats so he could be on a 53 and maybe he is really excited to be on the Pats?). I like the prospect but Hunter is a small school rookie, so he needs a year or two of experience.

Huggins said, “If you want to go pound for pound, number for number, his athleticism and the ability to process information, understand and learn and study like a pro, it was night and day.”

That is a garbled string of sports cliches that makes no actual sense. I have a feeling the Director of football Operations Gerald Huggins is actually AI.

I don’t think there was a third vet lined up to cut then bring back. And I don’t think they lost out on a waiver claim.

I think they put in three claims and expected they’d lose at least one of them, so they didn’t the cut and resign dance with two vets. But then they didn’t lose out on any waiver claims, so they withdrew the one for Hunter. That let him clear waivers and then they signed him later, after their pending IR designations were processed. Those pending IR designations are what motivated the whole thing, because iirc they were processed at 4pm while waivers were processed and awarded earlier so roster space was needed earlier, before the IRs processed. So after those IRs processed there was no need to cut a third vet to make space.
