OT: UConn venting/sympathy thread

Ouch. But I'm still more shocked the women lost. I was there, Frodo, when both teams won National Championships in the same year! VERILY!

I didn't think they'd shoot this badly six games in a row.
Other than that, game went exactly like I expected. Held Michigan to like 30 points under their average.
Yeah, not sure what happened to their shooting, but it definitely got cold.

maybe there is a silver lining to Michigan buying a 'chip ... might lead to some sort reform for the transfer portal fiasco that currently wrecks multiple D1 sports...

I tuned in for a while and was shocked by how poorly these allegedly "best-of-the-best" kids played (both teams). It looked like a glorified pickup game or a bunch of headless chickens running around. Fundamentals and disciplined teamwork appeared to be foreign concepts.

And they should definitely get off your lawn.

Basketball has quickly become rugby with no rules in the last 10 years. The concept of a pivot foot no longer exists, traveling and carrying is rampant. The things defensive players can do to the ballhandler and the shooter..... This is simply going to change the type of player you see on the court. You're going to see a more physical bigger taller, longer, less coordinated skill and players that are allowed to get away with more things that were violations 10 years ago. And it's going to look sloppy to every guy that is 40 and over and used to play or be a fan

BTW, is it just me, or does Ennui Husky resemble Joe Mazzulla?

The girls are so much better fundamentally that it's crazy. The passing, ball movement, etc., is much more fluid, and there are some really talented players out there. Also good to see the pro level gaining a little momentum, and they're starting to get some marquee players there as well.

'Even worse' is that Ennui Husky was official Husky logo for 1959-1960.

My favorite era was, of course, my own

Watching the game I thought UConn was doing a great job on defense (it seemed as though Michigan was getting nearly zero second chances / offensive rebounds), but the Huskies just couldn't ever take advantage of those situations on the other end of the floor.

Oh well, congrats on making it that far.

Yeah, give them a mower and clippers and it would look like a crazy quilt.

You actually think NCAA basketball in its current state does credit to the sport? It can't hold a candle to the teams and quality of play from 15-20 years ago. It's sad.

I agree. But in many ways basketball today is such a completely different sport than it was in 2010 and prior years. The rules are different and/or the game is just called completely different.

So some guys today would commit 12 turnovers a game if they got transported back to a game in 2010. And the guys back then would have to learn to take advantage of the extra steps and carrying that they are allowed to do today. And defensively today you're allowed to collide in the air with shooters (at that individual refs discretion) bump the dribbler hard at times and also hand check much more than was allowed 15+ years ago. Some guys today couldn't adapt their game to the skill and discipline, or it would just take time for them to retool their moves and their footwork to be legal back then

When I saw the NBA allowing James Hardin in 2013 to take 3 or 4 shuffling side steps after he picked up his dribble to shoot. And the NBA explained how 4 steps aren't traveling anymore, you knew this stuff was going to trickle down to NCAA an high school basketball.

This was not a good shooting team.

Ball's wrist injury robbed them of that second shooter.

Karaban actually shot at a very high rate. But Ball and Mullins were well below expectations. Ball was understandable given the injury.

Demary and Smith shot above expectations but at low volume. Ross was a surprise with shooting.

They were bullied and bruised.

If they had made more shots, then maybe they win. But you could say the same about Michigan running away with it.

The biggest factor was the way the game was called. You could run right up someone's back and knock them out of the way, which favored the more athletic team. Offensive ball sets were taken away by all the clutching and grabbing that was allowed. This was the equivalent of refs allowing DBs to grab WRs but somehow also decided to blow the whistle for OL holding constantly.

This is exactly what UConn didn't want.

Do you watch much college ball?

UConn is known as running a Euro offense with maximal passing, offensive sets. It's a highly intricate offense. Anything but headless chickens. Their style is direct from Europe... closest thing to the San Antonio Spurs.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next season without Luke Murray. . . .

Agreed but I think Hurley being a bball lifer may even improve things, especially now that Karaban is gone and they're not tied to the offense so much. We may just see it loosen up a little bit.

Over the past 4 years they've been awfully lucky with their ability to find Karaban and Newton late in the clock when their sets got gummed up, especially in Big East play.

They have no one to go to anymore late in the clock although Demary can become that guy. This is why Hurley may tweak the offense and allow for more occasional isolation. Especially when they are pressured in the backcourt and forced to start their sets late.
