Patriots Rumor Tracker / FA Signings (Updated: Signings in OP - 4/7)

Do you really think they will try to use any games he may miss to tell him they want to give him less money? That will not work, and he will definitely leave if they pull that.
Did not mean to say "give him less money" but suggested that the big $$$ be linked to Games Played

That and Pats may want to see how many games played in 2026 to set value & terms. Maybe Gonzo does not want games played incentives in his contract $. So many variables. So little knowns.
Gonzo is one of only 2 foundational players on the Patriots. The other is obviously Maye.
Both incredible players with great work ethic.
You don't mess around dealing with either.
You get them extended whatever it takes.

So, what reasons do you speculate (as we have) that it has not yet happened?

Its possible that Gonzo/any player wants to wait to sign an extension to increase the pay as much as possible
I totally get a player wanting to wait, bet on himself to play well and stay healthy, and then sign an extension after the market has gone up millions.

From a team perspective, there's literally zero incentive now to wait to extend a player, short of that player having a catastrophic, career changing injury or all of a sudden not playing well, therefore you dodged a bullet. If that doesn't happen, there's 3 possibilities and absolutely no others:

1. Let the player walk in free agency
2. Trade him
3. Extend the player at a new inflated price

No I did not.
I said a plan to hold off and see if you can tell him he should take less because he missed games will fail miserably and he will leave.
He is your second best player. Pay what it takes and get it done and dont play games.

I am pretty sure he is explaining what he meant.

At first glance I felt disappointed about letting Hawkins and Gibbens go.
But, then realized it was more about their paper-potential - they both have prototype size and looks, and made some big hits and splash plays...
However usually it was because they were constantly out of position and late to diagnose.
I think Byard will fully replace Hawkins and be better.
I don't think they found Gibbens and Tavai's replacement yet. (I'm not sold on Britt or Luketa)
But maybe Mapu can gain 15 lbs and be a legit ILB with range and speed?
Or Muma develops or Reese emerges?

Britt is a LB, but Luketa is listed as an "EDGE" guy. They're both more Special teams guys than they are Defense.

I fully expect the Pats to add an Edge and an LB in the draft as UDFA as well.

I'm not expecting anything out of Muma or Reese beyond helping on Special Teams if they make the roster.

The Pats have to replace Tavai, Jennings, and Gibbens.

Byard is a big upgrade over Hawkins.
Gibbens is a JAG. He did ok as a jag and he could be back, the tender would have been a raise.
I’m not good with Elliss as a starter. He disband a nice athletic okay now and then but he just doesn’t have the mind, and vision of a LB.

Yeah not at all...

Do you understand what the mind and vision of a Lb means?
It means reading plays and reacting correctly to fill holes in the running game. It means taking on and shedding blockers in a way that makes plays instead of being taken out of them.
It means having an awareness in the passing game to take away throwing lanes.

Making an open field hit has nothing to do with that.

I think you described Ellis fairly well I'm big fan of teaching current players to maximize their physical and mental abilities on the field. It's really kinda Jete to jettison players too early. A good steak takes time...let's not settle for fast food McDonald's. Ellis has certainly improved and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in 2026.

I don’t think you can teach instincts.
But if you think you can it should be to a reserve.

I’m a big fan of playing better players who don’t need to improve to be effective.

Mike Vrabel certainly improved to where he became an effective starter. I understand your point of view.

Vrabel arrived here as an effective starter.
If that was through development, it happened in Pittsburgh, as a reserve.
