Patriots Rumor Tracker / FA Signings (Updated: Signings in OP - 4/7)

Yes but the real question in regards to JSN is how much of impact to gameplanning against him have on how great Kenneth Walker played?

If JSN had been injured perhaps Walker is contained and the Pats win 7 to 3.
I am not sure of the answer to that

Seeing some disagreements with my AJ Brown or bust. Confused why that is. We need a #1 option. AJ Brown is that. I personally don’t think there is a #1 option available to us in the draft. We have plenty of 2/3/4 options.
No. The team doesn't "NEED" a number 1 guy. They need numerous guys who can cause mismatches. They have that and need a younger TE to bring in behind Henry and push Dippre.

Gronk was NEVER a guy who would be targeted 12-15 times a game like a true #1 is supposed to be. Yes, he was probably our best receiver over his prime years (when he was one the field), but an inline TE like Gronk was, can never be a #1. TE's have limited route trees and a pretty defined role. X's have a much more flexible and wide ranging route tree.

BTW- Fortunately for the Pats, Josh's reputation as one of the better OC's in the league is a lot higher than your view of him. Right now, the Shannahan offense is in vogue, while Josh still runs the EP scheme, which is harder to master for BOTH the QB and WR's, BUT when it IS mastered gives you a more flexible and effective way to deal with defensive problems.

That's what's got me excited. What we saw last season when we were the 3rd best total offense and the 4th best passing offense was just a GLIMPSE of what we can eventually be. It took Brady a decade before he had "all the answers to the test", so Maye has a LONG way to go. But there WILL be a significant step forward in his mastery of this offense this year and even more going forward, so there is a LOT to look forward to for Pats fans in the future
In 2014 & 2015, Gronkowski was targeted 8-9 times per game, on average. That's #1 receiver to me. During the 30 games Gronk played across those 2 years, he was targeted as few a 3 times and as many as 16. He has 12 games in double digits. Just to put a bit more context on things.

Sign Gonzo and it will be a great offseason pickup for me.
If it sn't done by May 1st, the team will exercise the 5th year option and then complete the new contract extension before camop.

The 2026 cap hit may depend on how much we much 2026 cap room we need.

I hope your right. Don't F around with our home talent Patriots. He proved it this Superbowl loss, true legit #1 young corner, rare to posses...

I have loved Gonzo from the get-go (ew, kinda creepy there), but I also think it's kinda crazy to "lock em up" before you have to ... unless you get some kind of a discount. Right now, we ain't getting no discount. What if he gets injured this year, and is never the same player? As much as I like Gonzo, the rate of injuries in football is so high, that over-investing in stars really can kill your roster. what people were paying for so-so talent in this free agent period seemed nuts. I'm leaning solid middle class and depth. Seattle is kinda the case for that. Curious what y'all think?

Actually you are right. It's a given going in that getting an early extension after the 3rd year of a rookie deal, that the player is going make some concession in order to get that big signing bonus today. For example, Gonzo is due to make up to $4.6MM this year under his rookie cap number

Trent McDuffie signed a 4 year $120MM deal with a $40MM signing bonus this FA period to set the market at about $30MM/yr. I think a deal that gave Gonzo a 3 deal at say, $25MM/yr when the contract kicks in and a $30MM signing bonus would be a good compromise. Just 3 years gives him another bite of the apple when the deal is done, and the $30MM signing bonus gives him generational wealth the day it's signed. And if you add the money he'll get from his rookie contract his 4th and 5th years will average more than $20MM per; If he was at the end of his contract, he too would be getting $30MM per.

The problem I see now in today's NFL is that waiting to sign a player only makes it much more likely another player at that position resets the market.

If I'm not mistaken, Jaycee Horn was the highest paid CB ever at $25 million annually, then a week later, Derek Stingly Jr. got $30 million.

That's the only discount now, signing a player before the standard cost is $10 million more per season.

Personally? I'd pay him, but I'm an armchair quarterback, so what do I know?

There's seemingly always a lull between the initial free agency frenzy, as the leftovers slowly mentally adapt to their real worth.

Your gonna loose em. Sign early. We are not going to get another top end 1st round low number pick hopefully.

I think the longer you wait the more likely the market will increase and the price will go up.

Its possible that Gonzo/any player wants to wait to sign an extension to increase the pay as much as possible

That and Pats may want to see how many games played in 2026 to set value & terms. Maybe Gonzo does not want games played incentives in his contract $. So many variables. So little knowns.

How many DL's do we carry? 6? 7?
We have Williams, Durden, Barmore
Farmer, Gregory
==========
Gregory is a PS guy.
Farmer did not show he was ready to play well as a front line guy
Durden was a pleasant surprise.
Behind Williams and Barmore there is zero certainty.

Do you really think they will try to use any games he may miss to tell him they want to give him less money? That will not work, and he will definitely leave if they pull that.

Saw a story on FB that the Pats had signed Wyatt Teller. Have seen no confirmation.
