Rumor: Some Patriots Players Have Doubts About Cam Newton

We'll learn a lot in a few days, although I don't know if we'll be able to confirm or debunk this report. I just hope if Mac does look better than Cam that the coaches will start him.

For me it comes down to a few things.
Cam is a vet he knows the NFL he knows the league.
That being said he isn’t the athlete he was when he first came out. He’s a tremendous athlete but the let’s say 10 percent decrease with age is the difference between a sack and a 10 yard run.
That being said it’s the arm it’s the passing game in this league if you can’t move the ball thru the air and build a passing rhythm get Into a groove and get momenetum going sustaining long drives. You will not win in this league.
Mac is a rookie but is mature past his years, has won on the biggest stage in college football has proven to be a quick learner and a great team leader.
Now the switch from college to the NFL is huge so questions that surround Mac are can he play well when the doesn’t have the best WRS in the league. Can he react to a pro defense can he read a play at the line and get the team out of it to live to the next play.
Can his arm be good enough? We’ve seen so many times if a QB doesn’t put enough mustard on the pass that defensive backs will sit on the routes and take a pass to the house.
I want to see leadership from Mac, understanding of the offense and ability to react and get in positive plays against defenses as well as improved arm strength.
If we see this kind of play from Mac Cam is on the bench.

I think if Mac looks better than Cam in practice, the only thing that would have kept Cam in the starting role is if his teammates really wanted him to start. But if the team is behind Mac, AND Mac looks better on the field, I don't think Bill would roll with Cam for S & G's.

Rumors are just that. I remember rumors of the Covid virus was a hoax. Saying them doesn't make them true.

Rumors aside, I've been thinking a LOT about the QB situation and AT THIS POINT, I've come to this conclusion. It would be best for the TEAM if Cam performed well enough to start the season. Starting rookie QB's rarely work out, even for QB's who later turn out to be great. Wanna remember Payton's first year, or Brees' (and the list can go on and on.)

As "mature" as we want to pontificate when describing Jones, he IS going to make ALL the rookie mistakes that rookies make. Here's Bill's dilema. He has a playoff ready roster that surrounds this team. IMHO this TC isn;t about winning starting jobs. Its about building the depth that will be necessary to last a 17 game season and win the 11+ games it will take to get into the tourney. All across the field EXCEPT at QB. At the most important position on the offense we really don't know what we have.

But the fact remains that like will be a LOT easier for Bill and Josh IF Cam can perform well enough to keep Mac on the Bench. Remember Josh's offense is predicated on precision, MISTAKE free football. In some sense it's not so much how many plays the QB "makes" it might be more important to count the MISTAKES he makes. Maybe to put it better, the guy who wins the job won't be the guy who makes "more plays", but the guy who makes the fewest mistakes.

When Bill anointed Cam as the starter this spring, I think this is what he had in mind. The long time vet who has had a LOT of success and seen a lot of things will have his experience in the league offset whatever physical limitations injuries have set on him and allow the QB of the future to marinate a bit and EASE into the league just like Brady did, or Mahomes did, etc. Of course guys like Payton were thrown into the hot water, but then you get seasons like he had his rookie year. Flashes of greatness was shown, but there were TWENTY-EIGHT picks to go with his 25 TD's.

That was a bad rebuilding team the Colts had in 98. No one cared when Manning made mistake after mistake. This isn't that kind of team. This is team with a 3 year window, and Bill doesn't want to give up 33% of that window while a rookie goes through his growing pains.

Who knows. The issues Cam had at the end of last season, could very well still be there and the issue becomes moot. I'm one who is still hoping that we will get an improved version of what we saw pre Covid.Cam, when there were multiple threads on this board calling for the Pats to get this guy under a long term contract......including many who are now calling for his head. Now THAT QB didn't suck.

Hopefully they are still going to allow fans at the practices so I can see for myself.

I guess the mandatory Cam genuflection has reached its expiration date.
Prefacing any negative Cam opinion with the seemingly obligatory "but he is a great leader and a great guy" was so unPatsFan-like and so unFelger & Maz-like...... yet the players, fans, and mediots all complied robotically.

Fascinating on many levels

But clearly that was so last year

A) if we are using historical precedent there are more rookie qbs who succeeded than QBs who bounce throws 4 yards short of the receiver
B) yes THAT QB absolutely did suck except for about 30 minutes playing against the worst pass defense in the nfl protecting their lead.
C) newton will certainly make more mistakes than Jones. We won’t see Jones react to pressure by throwing the ball into the teeth of the rusher. We won’t see Jones consistently struggle to read a defense and be late throwing to every receiver because of it. A QB prone to the amount of mistakes newton made last year wouldn’t have been drafted.

We can all agree that NFL quarterbacking has significant differences than college quarterbacking. There are some things to learn, to get used to, to get through.

Most people learn something faster and better by watching it prior to having to do it. It makes sense that this applies to quarterbacking.

Considering most of the offensive skill weapons on today's Patriot roster hardly played with or never played with Cam period..I'd give this little weight. They got the the same view we got last season (some from the sidelines) and in those moments it wasn't pretty..so yeah if they did say it- justified.

They were brought here (along with draft picks) to turn this thing around. Hopefully they stick to the script and dont contribute to doing the opposite.

Breaking news: It would be good for the team if Cam plays well.

If Cam plays better who gives a **** because it’s still Cam and your ceiling is wild card round exit. Play the kid and let him go through his ups and downs because he might be your future.
