Opinion: Trey Flowers won't be back next year

Flowers and Belichick both deal with the same sports agency, Neil Cornrich.
While this won't result in a hometown discount, the parties might be more
inclined to negotiate more sensibily.

I think what will happen is that Belichick will let Flowers to explore free agency first and see what the offers are, and wait for him to come back and decide whether the team should match the offer or not, like what happened with our past free agents. In Revis and DMac's cases, Patriots were priced out but decided to bring back DMac and let Revis walk. In Edleman and Hightower's cases, there weren't any bidding wars so they were brought back cheap. Flowers play at a premium position and there are a few teams with significant cap spaces (ex. Jests). I think Flowers will most likely be priced out of New England.

Which does suck. Our DL really isn't good. L. Guy is decent, that's pretty much it.

Bill knows the difference between having a piece like Trey Flowers and not, and he’s going to make a nice offer to try and keep him. I think this one is different. We’ll see.

While there was inconsistency throughout the regular season, and that I agree NE lacks star power on the DL, I find it curious you’d be down on them at this particular time...

That DL was key in winning a SB after having neutralized three of the most high powered O’s in the NFL. Players such as Wise and Butler aren’t going to wow you, but I think they are at least « good ».

In 2019, we aren’t going to line up an all star team at every position. But, this winter, that DL deserves a bit more love than some are giving.

The DL played well when it mattered down the stretch, although I have a feeling that some improvements will be made prior to fielding the 2019 team. I’m just hoping that those improvements aren’t offset by the loss of Flowers.

Who will rush the QB if he bolts?

fully recovered Rivers, Wise, Clayborn, potentially signing Zadarius Smith/Shaquill Barrett etc

plus whoever we will draft.

We have been known for not handing out bad contracts. So if Flowers wants 18-20 APY he will leave.

I think it comes down to guaranteed $. They should be willing to go to 40, but I don’t think they will go much over that.

In 2017 we almost ran completely out of quality de’s and were so desperate, we had to sign Harrison!!!!

In 2018 we had 6 de’s on the 53 most of the year.

Does bb want to go through another 2017 season again?

Greetings,

My gut feeling is that he won't be back, just by looking at what he would get at the market for DE's. A lot of money could be floating his way and a lot to leave on the table. I personally know a lot of people in Flowers camp (Trey and I grew up in the same town) and they told me they don't know what his plans are for next season.

No but BB doesn't sign players to bad contracts just for the sake of keeping them. And there will be other options on the market, other players might develop and thze Pats might add 1-2 DL players through the strong DL draft.

If BB would manage the roster like fans would, we would be in caphell and suck pretty badly. He knows what he is doing.

Definitely feels very possible. I think a guy like Brandon Graham would also be on the table as replacement.

But would he have fun?
I love Graham great guy I got to meet him at a work event and had drinks with him.
I was happy for him that he made the play to cement the Superbowl for Philly.
I felt conflicted sad for my team but happy for a great guy.

One important aspect to note, some are saying Flowers is not a pure pass rusher, and does a lot of things well but don't master anything. I think he is not a finished product and can still evolve.

He just played 3 years since year 1 was a redshirt year for him.

Didn't we have the top pressure rate in the league, or close to it, going into the playoffs? Or was it among all playoff teams?

That said, it would be highly, highly helpful if we were able to keep Flowers.
