Umm...isn't that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

Re: Umm...isn\'t that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

Wheatley may have been a gem in college, against mostly players who are not NFL calibre. Fact is, that cant be changed is that he is 5-9 and 177 lbs and he probably wont survvive pre season. The day of the 5-9, 5-10 cornerback in the NFL is past. Today\'s receivers are 6-0 or better, and getting taller and faster.

This was a total waste of a draft pick in the class of Eugene Chung and Chris Canty.

Although it is not unexpected as the BB/Pioli team have made a disaster out of second round picks on a consistent basis. This one will go down as one of their worst.

The Mayo pick will probably turn out pretty good however.

First of all get your facts straight. Wheatley is 5'9 5/8'' 187 lbs. So what kind of judgment can you have about a player when you're that far off on his size? You obviously know nothing about him. Tell me... how tall was Assante Samuel? 3/8 of an inch taller than Wheatley.

Mayo was the guy we were targetting going into today's draft. How can you be upset when the Pats get the #1 guy you are targeting?

As for Wheately, people have to get over the size thing. Who covered Randy Moss the best in the regular season? Lito Shepperd. He is a half an inch taller than Wheatley. He overcame his half foot size difference with Moss by jamming Moss at the line of scrimmage. That can be a great equalizer.

Re: Umm...isn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

Can you feed me some stock picks too? Predicting the future must be a pretty good skill - in fact, I would think BB would bring you on board, we won't even have to tape, you'll be able to tell him the play before it happens! LMAO.
That is so, but in either case, the Pats always end up putting one back there because both, especially Maroney, is a threat to break one.

But these players give the team options at other positions too. Wheatley will give them nothing and IMO wont make it past camp.

Terrell Thomas will make the Giants and he will be a starter or at the least the no. 3 corner for them.

But in either case there is nothing we can do about it now, the damage has been done and he is a Patriot. That being said all I can do is root for him and hope that I am wrong. Unfortunately I dont think I am.

Re: Umm...isn\\\'t that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

Exactly. I'd much rather my dime back be my kick returner than my strating CB or starting RB.

Starters who don't need to be constantly risked by playing as returners.

Re: Umm...isn\\\\\\\'t that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

Go to the draft tracker on nfl.com 2nd round 178 lbs.

The "draft tracker" is incorrect, holmes. His weight is 187, and some intern f'd up the numbers.

Re: Umm...isn\\\'t that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

So we overdrafted a CB in order to keep him from the Giants?

.

I certainly doubt that we drafted a player so an NFC team that we hardly ever play would get him.

The Giants did, IMO, get the better of the two, in Thomas.

Maybe we just had too many Thomas\\\'s already.

Go to the draft tracker on nfl.com 2nd round 178 lbs.

Pro Football Weekly has him at 187 as well. I've heard "just under 190" so I tend to think that 187 is correct.

In two separate locations they have him listed at 177 on one, and 178 on nfl.com draft tracker.

That being said, is it possible that the one that has him at 187 is incorrect? And does it really matter, 177, 178, 187....he is still 5-9 and that is a problem for a corner in today\\\'s NFL.

You wanna bet he won't make it past camp?

BTW, Adrian Peterson was made of glass last year at this time.

Well, maybe not your best argument since he didn't last the season!

Pro Football Weekly has all the combine measurements here:

http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Extras/2008/combineCB.htm

NFLdraftcountdown.com has him at 187, as does CNNSI.com, and ESPN.com

I think you would here more comments about his lack of weight if he were truly 177......

Like I said, I or anyone else can only go by what we read. Some have him at 177 or 178, including the official NFL draft tracker and others have him at 187. Whatever he is it is far too small for today\\\'s NFL, IMO opinion and that is all that any of us have - opinions.

Well, there seem to be far more sources at 187, certainly enough that criticizing him for being too frail is at the very least premature.

*There are multiple players with incorrect weights on the NFL draft tracker, so he wouldn't be the first.

Ah yes, the curl-up-and-play-dead method of arguing: "we're all entitled to our opinions."

Wheatley was across the board top five in virtually every combine skill test.

I dont see any argument. Different places have him listed at different weights. No big deal, really. Not really worth anargument is it?

The combine really has never impressed me. A bunch of football players running, jumping in shorts and t-shirts with no opposing players playing against them.

I get a kick when they say some guy ran something in 4.50 and then when he is fully dressed and someone is in his way, or trying to tackle him, whatlthe hell good was the 4.5 he ran in shorts?

Not suggesting the combine is totally meaningless but it really is a far cry from real, on field action against real players, in full dress.

*shudders* Nobody could be as bad as Chris Canty! Wheatley projects to nickelback to me but with the bonus of providing a big boost to our return game. Yeah I think he was taken a bit early, but those are two skills that could be useful for this team. Where was the Pats defense gashed the most in the last 2 playoff losses? Right in the middle. Mayo and Wheatley should help alleviate those weaknesses in the D.

Although it is not unexpected as the BB/Pioli team have made a disaster out of second round picks on a consistent basis. This one will go down as one of their worst.

LOL, I think one of my first sentences was, the CURSE of Bethel Johnson strikes again! I really hope Wheatley proves that statement wrong. The Pats can still scoop some pretty good talent on the second day. I have no idea what we're going to do with 3 third round picks though, we'll probably end up trading one away for a future pick.

Wheatley was across the board top five in virtually every combine skill test.

So was Bethel Johnson... but I certainly wouldn't hold good scores against Wheatley.
