When we drafted Gostkowski I was a bit surprised the Pats selected him particular, but I read that he played baseball then the thought crossed my mind about the ability now to run the fake FG similar to Vinatieri to Brown a few years back. They haven't run it yet, but it would be interesting to see how good of an arm he really has.

lets hope he can heave better than garo yepremian

Let's hope we'll never have to be in the position to try a fake FG.

I would think his concentration would be more important than his arm. Obviously you need to be able hit the target, but if you're running a fake you're assuming the guy is WIDE open. Doesn't have to be pretty, just get it there.

So what really matters is, can he sell the fake then not get the jitters and flutter the ball six feet over the open receiver's head?

I think the more important question surrounding him right now is earning BB's trust. It seemed like BB would rather just give the other team the ball instead of Gostkowski possibly missing and them gaining an extra 7 yards.

I thought this was going to be a thread about an arm injury. phew (even if it is just a kicker)

He looked good at QB in a charity flag football game I attended.

I could look good at a flag football game. And I'm no quarterback.

BB doesn't trust Gostkowski to kick a 50 yarder that would have tied the Super Bowl (or given us a 10-3 lead at the time). Do you seriously think he'll trust him to throw an option on a fake field goal?

Isn't throwing a football completely different from throwing a baseball? I would say it is. If he played QB in high school, then that's another matter, he might have potential then. But if you see Gostkowski throwing a pass for the Pats... you'll know we're in a DIRE situation! LOL.

I could see the Pats using a fake field goal and throwing it. Though, I always remember that punter on the Pats, who actually played qb and given the opportunity really sucked at throwing.

Tom Tupa???...heh...yeah..and then the next season he signed with the Rats and EMBARRASSED Ducks Hurlington in pre-season...imagine...your PUNTER has a better arm than your FRANCISE HEROBOY SAVIOUR.

If Adam V can do it....why not the Ghost??

completely. I played college baseball (Pitcher) and I can only throw a football 50 yards or so....and not always on target. Not to say if you can do one you can't do the other but they don't always go hand in hand.

50 yards isn't all that bad without shoulder pads.

thanks, but I used to (my shoulder is kinda shot now) in college throw a baseball in the low 90's so it seems kinda pitiful only throwing a football 50 yards....Now I know how Chad Pennington feels....

The Patriots are an awesome team right now. Yes there are some wholes they have to fill and improve this off season but nothing major in my opinion. But I don't trust our kicker. I really don't.

On the flip side, I wonder if Welker ever gets reps kicking. I assume he would be our #2 place kicker or would it be Hansen?

Then you're a much better football player at this stage of your life than Fred Smerlas and Steve DeOssie are at theirs. Because they looked terrible at QB in the same game.

Or else it's not quite as simple as you think it is.

Never discount any possibility with the Pats. Remember Flutie's dropkick? I'm sure the coaches have it mapped, and would use it if the situation called for it and the variables were present (eg Vrabel wide open on an extra point, with the Pats up by five).
