Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

And I would go the other way, give him a full 5-year extension, and lock him up until his early 30s. These guys just don't grown on trees a) and b) by years 4 and 5 of the extension, he will be an absolute bargain.
Except that in 2 or 3 years he would want to renegotiate

If I were them, I would counter with an ask for a shorter length contract (2-3yrs only), so his next in his next deal he will be a true FA and still in his prime.
Or even a more short term option...................
Request a very significant salary bump for this year "if you want to see me on the field for all 17" and then tell Robert "We'll give negotiations another go next offseason"

I don’t really want to argue about it, but there were several things in your original comment that triggered my response and triggered me enough I want to clarify a little more.

Generally I dislike assumptions. It’s too easy to go astray if they’re wrong. It leads to conversations going off the rails a lot, often just from arguing about the assumptions themselves and that adds no real value.

Even more, I dislike drawing conclusions from assumptions. When you state a conclusion you’re making a stronger statement than just stating an assumption. But it depends on the underlying assumption being right, so that’s a potential, pitfall. And you’ve got another pitfall, if your conclusions are arguable. Again, I’m not looking to argue but I don’t accept your assertion that there are only two ways to interpret it.

All that isn’t even the biggest problem for me though. I really, REALLY, REALLY don’t like claims of knowing how a player is thinking or feeling, or worse how they *should* be thinking or feeling. It presumes too much about their values and value systems and overall psychology to be reliable. The only things we know are what the player says, but even then it’s very limited. We know Gonzo said he’s frustrated but we don’t know if he’s frustrated because the goalposts keep moving (we don’t know that, it’s just an example of one possibility) or if he’s frustrated because his agent told him it would be easy and get done as soon as Witherspoon signed and it hasn’t been, or what. So we’ve got to be real careful about projecting thoughts and feelings that Gonzo may or may not have, just projecting them because they’re what we would have, or think he should have. And then we assume that’s reality when it’s not, and again the whole conversation gets wrapped around the axle.

Final point on all this is that we have many self serving commentators offering their take on it all. None of them except Gonzo, his agent team, and the Pats FO have any real knowledge. Everybody else is repeating something they’ve heard someone else say, or they are making **** up themselves based on what they have heard other people say plus their own assumptions and projections. Everything coming from the Pats FO (including Kraft), Gonzo, or Gonzo’s agents, comes from someone with a dog in the fight, an axe to grind. That’s all going to be slanted, biased, selective, incomplete, and therefore unreliable. Everything else is even less reliable. So reports about whether the Pats are unwilling to match Witherspoon’s deal, or unwilling to match Stingley’s deal, really have to be taken with a grain of salt. Remember that the reporters putting those stories out are paid for the eyeballs their content attracts, not the veracity of that content.

So take everything I said earlier and consider that your post that bothers me rests on assumptions about the veracity of two articles of the content I just showed to be unreliable and hopefully you’ll see why I don’t think you should draw conclusions and then project Gonzo’s thoughts and feelings from it. Like I said, I don’t really want to argue about it, I really think that what I just discussed in the previous paragraph about unreliable information sources makes it impossible to know enough to have a good foundation for discussion. That’s why I said it was really moot.
Can you stop doing this ****?

Also wanted to mention media has done its damage hyping him up with the consensus he’s the top 2-3 CB in the NFL. Once that happens, players want to get paid while on rookie deals.

I would be shocked if he plays week 1 without a contract.

I think the media fuels the agent more than the player. I personally imagine their agent has their ear more than the media does.

And agents, by and large, want to get paid. It's their job, but...at the same time, a lot of them seem to set unrealistic expectations on their players.

Have you ever considered that this so-called nickel and diming was part of the reason for the nearly 2 decades run of excellence the Pats had, while most of the other great teams of the era had runs of 4-5 years (maybe with the exception of KC) Just a thought
Yes, BB had was very cut-throat that way, and Brady took less than he could've.
Those days are gone.
Luv or hate BB, him and Brady together made up for a lot deficiencies, but to think we can repeat that is unrealistic.
They were a once in a lifetime tandem.

We will sign a deal before week 1, IMO.

It is that or trading him for a BOAT LOAD of picks.....like the haul Micah Parsons brought in....

As many have talked about this offseason, we could see a 2002 drop off on defense if Gonzalez sits out and/or traded with the edge situation being a mess.

Yup.
Sign or no sign, if he's not playing, or not playing 100% committed it will a huge hit to our chances this year.
They really need to get this figured out ASAP.

and force him to play after 2 or 3 or 4 years. A fifth year means nothing,, other than increase the AAV with $60M number and of course spreading the bonus money over one more year.

Callahan blasting cheap Kraft was awesome

...and you are just an ******* with nothing substantive to offer this board beyond this kind of attack post. Why don't you just leave, I hear Trump is looking for internet trolls for the upcoming election. I think you'd be a PERFECT fit for his administration.
Bringing up Trump....
.... in response to a post that has nothing to do with Trump...
.... really kinda totally makes you the deranged ******* who contributes nothing.

He isn’t fetching what Parsons brought. Parsons was viewed as a generational player. Gonzo is a very good player and one of the best at his position, but he’s not viewed as a Revis or Bailey. He’s also missed a lot of football since he’s come in the league. None of us know the negotiations, but I don’t think Gonzo’s deal needs to jump Witherspoon’s by much.

Mike Giardi saying that Pats don’t want to pay Gonzalez what Witherspoon got. If that is the case, it’s going to get ugly.

Last year coming off the hammy he didn’t look right. Once fully healthy he was an awesome, 2nd team all pro awesome.
He made 2nd team All Pro the year prior. Made Pro Bowl this year. And this is where these rankings are inconsistent with the media. Players, coaches and execs view him as a consensus top 2-3 CB in the league. How does he not make first team All Pro then?

Maybe cause he missed the first 3-4 games and didn’t start off hot?

That’s the biggest hang up I see. Also related issue would be when his new contract starts. Is it a true extension to his present contract, or does it supersede and replace his current contract?

A two or three year extension with bonuses overlaid on his present contract would seem to me to be acceptable middle ground that gives him money now and doesn’t have him back at the negotiating table until 2030. That gives the team a few years of stability.

Replacing his current contract with anything than four years would be unacceptable because we’d be back in this mess too soon. Five years would be better.

With all the work and angst that’s gone into this round I’d like to see them do a four year extension, so he’s under contract through 2031. In my opinion that would be ideal, so both sides have a reasonable period of stability. Maybe if Gonzo gets a big enough bag now and dislikes the process enough he’d be willing to accept a five year extension, which would be as good as possible, but his agent probably won’t let him defer the next round that far into the future.

Does anybody know when and how agents get paid? Do they get paid when the player gets paid? Or is it when the contract is signed? I’d think it would be when the player is paid, because adjusting for bonuses and incentives would be gnarly, but I’m not sure. It seems a lot of questions about terms have the agents’ interests at play as much as the player’s.

How much does Giardinreally know? How much is he just stirring up **** and keeping himself on the click leaderboard?
