Patriots Player Departure Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick

I can't imagine Watson ever being successful again.
He will start 3-4 games before benching, maybe less?
Agreed.
Sanders.....yuck.
Agreed.
Dillon might be the best of those 3.
Agreed.
Maybe they'll play Green and just run it 80% of the time.......yes, I'm kidding.
If I were them I would keep Green just based on athletic ability, so I wonder if Dillon will even be on the team.
If Green were willing to switch to the WR position I’d have drafted him.

There's no reason at all to think that Williams can't accomplish the same thing. He's faster, gets better separation, and has proven he can catch the ball.
That’s the hope but it hasn’t happened yet. If it does I will applaud the trade.

Food for thought:

When you think about it. It would be probably true. Williams does kick returns. Chism does punt returns. Brown, Doubs, and Pop are the starters. Hollins brings something different to the table than any other receiver. Boutte is redundant to Brown in most ways. They can't activate seven WRs. And in a lot of games, they can't activate six WRs. Boutte would likely be the odd man out.

I guess depending on the defense they played, they could activate Boutte and deactivate someone else. But in most circumstances, Boutte would have to be the odd man out.

Like I said earlier, if they didn't find a trade partner, they very likely would have cut him outright.

I don't think they would have cut him. They kept him on the roster and tried to trade him before the trade deadline. I doubt they would have let him just walk for nothing. But you never know.

Sounds good in theory, but roster spots will be needed.

Boutte was also well behaved, I doubt that would be the case on game day when he finds out he was inactive.

I don't think there was any chance of them putting him in storage. They already knew they had no intention of paying him, there was no reason to handicap themselves roster wise by keeping him on ice. A late round pick wasn't worth all that hassle.

Yep, and compare/contrast to the player coming back, a player with 1 year of experience used to playing STs and being a backup, not going into the season needing a new contract.

I think we’ve reached the point where I can only conclude you are either goofing around or just don’t grasp the concept

I understand exactly what the concept is. What you don't seem to understand is that if AJ Brown is playing 80-90% of the snaps on passing downs that he can that role at times when he isn't the primary receiver on certain plays. He will be asked to run deep routes to draw away the over the top safety attention from the center of the field or the other side of the field on certain plays. Just because he is a starter doesn't mean he won't be asked to be a decoy at time.

A staple of the Patriots offense is spreading the ball around. That means many plays will be designed where Brown is used as a decoy and used as you talk about Boutte. He won't be a primary target on every play.

We didn’t trade a first round pick and absorb a huge contract for AJ Brown to be a decoy.

We run off coverage A LOT. The player in that role is sacrificing targets by running routes that have the least chance of getting targetted. Yeah that sound like AJ Brown would love that role.

You keep making up new responses and grasping at straws. You are digging new holes with every reply.

Every starting WR plays a decoy at times unless you are the Seahawks where they seem to only design plays to throw to JSN.

You have some elite WR who will dog it when they are just a decoy. Randy Moss was famous for running half ass routes when the ball wasn't designed to go to him. Not as much his first two years with the Pats, but for most of his career.

AJ Brown has in the past and will in the future act as a decoy for other players to make plays. He will get his targets and he will be used to take coverage away from the Maye's intended target. That is how offenses work. Maye is going to throw 400-500 times this year. Brown will not be the primary or secondary option on at least over a hundred of them when he is on the field.

You also seem to think that every time Boutte ran a deep route that the ball wasn't thrown to him that he was acting as a decoy. Many times when he ran these routes, he was the intended primary receiver and he just wasn't open and Maye went to another receiver. I seriously doubt he was used as a decoy remotely as often as you think he was.

I am not grasping at straws. I am arguing with a guy who clearly doesn't understand football.

Hate the trade. Knew it was gonna happen unfortunately. Horrible return while strengthening an afc playoff opponent .

Zero foresight.

Not a huge fan of the trade, but the return is what I expected.
I always said we would get a 5th or 6th. Reed and a 7th is inline with that.
If Reed works out, even as a ST ace then it’s a fine trade.

The other option to "zero foresight" is that you disagree with Vrabel's projected use of Boutte if he were stay on the team, and also the value that other teams see in Boutte. Vrabel didn't see any value to us going forward. He even said that might be inactive for some games if he were on the team. As an aside, Reed will likely be active and contributing this year and next.

Not that it is the same thing, but people said the same thing about strengthening an direct opponent about when Belichick traded Bledsoe to the Bills.

Usually when you see trades like these, it indicates the team trading the player doesn't think the player is as good as people think. Maybe Boutte is a just product of Drake Maye and that is what Vrabel and company feel. He did catch a lot of 50-50 balls and catches in tight coverage. You need a QB with pinpoint accuracy in those situations. Not sure if CJ Stroud is that guy. He hasn't been an above average accurate passer since his rookie season.

Dude
Let’s recap.
You tried to argue that 20+ gains are the same as deep throws
You tried to argue that Doubs is a deep threat
You tried to argue that 10 yard passes take the top off.
You tried to argue that Diggs and his 8.7 ADOT and a TE were the primary receivers pulling coverage deep not the guy with a 17.5 ADOT
Now your argument to counter the advantage we had last year if a deep threat who pulled coverage away, by design, as a key facet of the offense is everyone’s a decoy sometimes.

Let me try (no doubt futilly) to educate you.
When you design a pass play you have progressions. Those progressions vary depending upon the read of the defense.
If you have a deep threat on the boundary and you run him deep he can be both the first progression or the last depending upon the coverage.
So if Maye sees man coverage and the safety is not going to impact your deep route he’s throwing there.
Your “he isn’t open” is ignorant. Do yourself a favor and learn something. Get the all22 and watch some deep throws. Where is the receiver when the qb makes the decision to throw or releases. They get open while the ball is in the air. The qb is reading coverage and leverage.

If he sees coverage where there is a safety over the top, that is no longer a first progression and is now a case of 2 defenders being taken out of the area of the other routes.

The nature of a deep route is if you get the matchup one on one throw it and if you don’t it drew coverage. Why do you think they run so many deep routes and throw to them so rarely?

AJ Brown has not been used as a decoy, he is a primary receiver. He is a receiver who attracts attention which leads to the other receivers getting opportunities, but he is absolutely not the guy you call in the run a deep route into double coverage so you can throw to Hollins.

I do. Vrabel makes mistakes just like everyone else. This was one of them.

We shall see.
I hope he is, but that’s far from certain.
I would put his chances of being on the opening day roster in 2027 at 50/50 right now.
The good news is he will have an opportunity to prove his worth, up to him to seize it.

Wow! Your diatribe is an exercise insanity. You are literally arguing with voices in your head. Instead of arguing with arguments you think I made, but didn't, you might want to seek the mental help you desperately need.

I am done entertaining your insanity just like most people on this board have done years ago.
