Patriots Injury News Landry-concerning if true

Jadeveon Clowney talk again. I figured that since he's 33, this would end. He's been a free agent like 6 times & he's still not made any impression on those teams to get more than 2 years. Look at his stats. They are not great, particularly his ability to make stops. His highest number of tackles was 59 and that was in 2017.

Sacks are not the ultimate stat for judging a good edge defender that it's being made out to be here.

The easy guess on Clowney is that the scans are not favorable. Doctors say his knee or shoulder or something looks like it’s about to explode, but so far he’s been able to keep everything intact with appropriate rest. Sometimes the MRIs are right (for example, Hightower’s pec 5 games after the Jets failed his physical), and sometimes it never actually leads to a severe injury. Teams are still going to take that into account while fans rely largely on games missed.

If only Vrabel would’ve listened to me dating back to April when I lobbied to sign Clowney. We really could have used him this year.
Yeah but now hard did you try to tell him?
Not hard enough, pal.
Its YOUR goddamn fault

I called Gillette, been on hold since April.
I'm starting to think they forgot about me.

FO and Wolf askeep at the wheel.
Who could not have seen thos coming.
Landry signing has been a disastet, always injured.
Seems like Wolfie should have planned for this during free agency.

Maybe he can welch on the contract and not pay Landry

So it’s been you tying up the phone lines and preventing them from getting through to close Gonzo’s deal?

Everyone talks up endlessly about how special Ponder is going to be until they realize he’s the best option we have left sans Jones. Lmao.

Some comments on the comments.

WTF guys, what don't you understand about the term "free agent". Who knows that the Pats didn't try and sign him and he CHOSE to go back to Texas, for whatever reason.

We are ready to pay Gonzo around $35MM/yr and he missed the first 3 games, why are we so bent out of shape if Landry misses the first game or the first 4.

He was NOT washed last season, he was our LEADING sacker, and even after he came back and was clearly diminished, he provided consistent pressure and set the edge well in the run game.

Landry is in the position he is right now BECAUSE he chose to play injured the last half of the season. If he had had his surgery right after his injury or even a month after, or if the Pats hadn't added 6 weeks more to their season, he'd have been ready to play now.

People remember that the Pats during their 2-decade reign as an annual contender for the title, they usually ranked in the top 10 in team sacks, what they forget is they usually did it without having a dominant individual edge rusher. They have got their top sack rating because BB knew how to manufacture sacks schematically. Vrabel only had ONE season where he had double digit sacks as an edge player, and he was on teams that produced a lot of sacks as a team.

Last year the Pats had just 35 sacks as a team and ranked 24th in the league yet had a top 5 defense and went to the Superbowl, so I would think again about the importance of sacks as an indicator of overall success. FYI-they ranked 19th in total "pressures" (305) and 13th in QB hits. (89)

Edge is obviously a concern, but sacks/hits/pressures CAN be manufactured by good, but not great, players. We have seen it done for many years now. I think when Landry returns, say after the 4th game, he will add to the edge group and improve our pass rush rotation.

... and that's all I have to say about that.
Good post.

I do think people don’t realize there’s always some disgruntled edge that’s available mid season for trade. If things are that rough on the edge, we can always make a move.

Too bad we wasted the trade resource which Boutte represented. We should have gotten an edge or a LB for him. Then the 7th rounder wouldn't be quite the sick joke it is now.

Shut up already about Boutte. The frikin 41 page thread has enough whining. You don't need to bring it here. Just move on already.

There is a tendency for all NFL fans to get caught up in specific stats/speculation/commentary who seem to be blind to the big pix i.e. in '26 the Pats had a top 5 defense. Kuhr fell into this position after T. Williams developed health issues. Kuhr under the guidance of Vrabel developed nicely.
Has this years D improved, not sure? Kuhr is in his 2nd season; Dline, Edge & MLB's do not not seem to be, but if I go down that road will become just another "speculator" who relies on secondary info regurgitation.
I will wait and see how this years defense does after the first 5 games; Seahawks, Steelers, Jacksonville, Buffalo and Las Vegas. Then we all might be better able to pass judgement.

Did you notice none of the starters played in the last preseason game, Ponder was among the players not starting. The Pats brass clearly think Ponder is special enough to be their starter.

Jacas, Swinson and possibly Luketa are the depth guys until Landry gets back. Assuming development and health that’s a good group.

So it’s been you tying up the phone lines and preventing them from getting through to close Gonzo’s deal?
Oh man, never thought of that!
According to many, Kraft might be cheap enough to only pay for one line, so it's possible.

While our schedule is much tougher on paper, those 1st 5 teams have gone through some serious changes.
JAC & SEA maybe least of all, but Kubiak gone matters, SB hangover matters, lead RB matters. PIT & BUF have new HC's and team structures, and LV is a rebuilding mess. So, the offense that may give us the biggest test might be JAC.
Either way, I think we can go 3-2 to start.
