Reed's rookie season was a lot better than Boutte's rookie season. Boutte looks like the better player because he's been in the league 3 times longer. Reed may also be a decent role player/starting caliber player this year/next year.

From a scouting report on Reed:

Ultimately, Reed represents solid value in the middle rounds as a high-floor prospect who can contribute immediately while developing into a potential starter. His ceiling will depend largely on continued refinement of his coverage skills, but his floor is secure given his special teams prowess and ability to play multiple roles. The film shows a player who brings infectious energy and consistently makes his presence felt - the kind of tone-setter who elevates the physicality of both practice and game day.

Who was a fine starting NFL S for several years (but mostly with Detroit on bad teams), but pretty underrated while he was here because he was beaten on play action pass that cost us a game his rookie year. The SAME kind of play action pass that beat all pro Troy Polamalu, at least once, nearly every time he played the Pats.

Sorry, this is a rant that been a burr in my saddle for several years now, anytime someone complains about the Wilson pick. We can only HOPE that Reed turns into as good a SS that Wilson did in Detroit.

Remember Reed was a starter for the Texans last year during the playoffs, on what was widely considered the BEST defense in the league. I'll be very happy to have him be a core STer and back up with us. I was as dumbfounded as the rest of us when I first heard about this trade, and it is easy to see why it has been widely viewed as a win for the Texans. But this kid is clearly a riser who is having a great camp in Houston, showing a clear 2nd year leap. As long as he doesn't take Saunders slot on the roster, (a personal Binky from last season when we picked him up mid-season and also having a great camp, I love this pick. A safety room of KB, Woodson, Saunders, Reed, and (pick one) Pettis or Schooler, that would be the best safety room we've had since McCourty was back there.

This is why I said that the metrics lie.

The only stat I'm interested in is how much I'm getting on the average play. Not how much I'm getting when a play is successful.

But you are the one using metrics. I am saying the metrics don't mean much.

I am using the eyeball test. Boutte makes some great plays. Other plays I think he benefits from having Maye throw to him. I don't think you are going to see him producing in Houston like he did last year unless Stroud turns his game around.

You’re thinking of Tavon Wilson and that game was against Seattle.

Tom Brady reverted back to his early days about to put the nail in coffin for the other team, only to throw an interception in the end zone to Seattle. A field goal at worst would’ve put them up 27-10 making a comeback more difficult for them at that point. There was a huge momentum shift after that interception.

Troy Polamalu was awful in coverage. His kamikaze style play at the LOS overshadowed that. Media loved it.

Belichick stuck Boutte on the bench the entire season for not dragging a toe in bounds. Like he had any actual chance.

In fairness, Boutte was a head case his first couple of years. He went into the front office and told them he quit football and had to be talked down while sitting in his car in his parking lot by Rosenhaus and Wolf. He said to the media in 2024 that he would go to the sidelines and tell them to give him the damn ball and felt he was such a great talent that he shouldn't have to ask for them to call plays to get him the ball.

I am sure there was a lot more to it than him not dragging his toe.

That tells me the Pats clearly do not feel the same about Boutte as people on this board. Those comments seem like a diss. You gotta assume Vrabel was on board or even driving them trading Boutte away.

Not hearing the actual comments and in context, not sure if it was a diss. But if this was the way Wolf actually said it, the Pats do not think Boutte is all that good.

I don’t remember any of that. If those things did happen it was barely discussed. The most he ever did was get busted for gambling on himself in college or something. The whole attitude thing you are indicating has never been reported in the past two seasons. Frankly a number of players had a lot to be pissed off about back then.

And I very much disageee with the second statement. He was getting a few opportunities then he didn’t drag his toe and wasn’t seen until the next season. The timing suggests it was Belichick being Belichick and benching a player for a single mistake. Ball had to go to Davante and JuJu instead I guess, whichever terrible receiver he wrongly paid.

not mentioned yet, at least from what I can tell, is that perhaps the Pats did try to extend Boutte before signing Doubs, and Boutte did not agree to their terms, preferring to bet on himself in his walk year to have a big year. Therefore, the player asked to be traded because they could not make a deal, and the team signed Doubs because they could not make a deal

What happens if Houston and Boutte cant come to a contract agreement?

Stroud’s better than Mac, Zappe, Brissett or whoever the hell else was throwing him the ball during that stretch. If Stroud gets the ball in his vicinity Boutte can make plays.

Drake Maye, one of the best players in the league, trusted Boutte and went to him in key situations over Pop or Hollins or whichever other WR not named Diggs. I think people here are very much underrating the connection between a QB-WR.

Last season it genuinely felt like Drake didn’t quite trust Pop Douglas enough to make him a higher volume target. I’ll be interested to see if/how that changes this season.

So he was two catches from being 7th most. Changing history because you like a guy is kind of foolish. He was a good JAG receiver who made a few amazing catches. The offense didn't come close to revolving around him no matter how much you wish it had.

I don't know if he didn't trust Pop per se but I think it had more to do with Drake having a preference for the big play- which comes from in part the trust he had in Boutte to make them.

From what I was able to read before the paywall this isn’t a knock on Boutte. It’s a knock on the clown show that was Belichick in 2024.

I respect that he felt he was better than washed, overpaid, apathetic players like Davante and JuJu and wanted opportunities. The fact that he was pissed off by Billy’s circus doesn’t make him look bad. Good on him.

Now Hollins and Pop were both better and he was basically a #5 receiver despite being called on for more important situations.

Boutte is an interesting guy. He has had off field problems but has matured too and is very open about his feelings.
