Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

I'll just say this; is Gonzo the Best CB in the league or one of the better young ones?? They're many good young ones in the league Today. Having too many Players at Top of their positions Cap wise is not alway a good thing. We can only imagine what Maye is going to get. I would love to see Gonzo play another Full Season before they commit.

The only way to be assured your contract isn't 'obsolete' is to get some ridiculous contract that nobody would want to come close to matching.

Which obviously would be a stupid thing for the Patriots to do.

Or he'll just have to 'accept' that whatever deal he signs will, at some point during its life, be obsolete.

That is just how cap economics work.

Gonzo is putting the Pats in a hard situation. He is a CB1 and a very good one. But he isn't the best in the league. Probably not top 5 right now. He is top 10... and among the top 10, he is at an ideal age though and is next in line for the big pay day. But he is not that rare CB that deserves to be the top paid guy for more than 1 year... 2 max. He deserves his turn, but he is not so good that he is a guy who gets that special contract. He gets 'the best guy up' contract. Not the 'singular player' contract.

Gonzo thinking he deserves more than the next guy up contract and that he should get it early is just not accurate. IF he wants the huge deal though, he can go the Mahomes route... but no one wants to pay a CB a 6 or 7 year deal. So that is a non-starter anyway.

Personally i am not sure i believe this. Everyone in his ear is probably telling him the same thing. It is his turn... but even Surtain, the best in the game, had to compromise Even Surtain didn't get his turn for long... his team stepped in though and gave him a kicker to keep him more competitive. But he still isn't the highest paid. If Surtain is still a guy who needs to take his turn, so is Gonzo.
Excellent post Bob... if Gonzo is going be ****ish before his actual time; I would move him for picks and roll the dice.

Remember that time Logan Mankins set the market, how contentious it got and how it went down to the wire.

Big money deals can be like that…

Gonzo is negotiating
my concern is that RK announcing his offer publicly was stating that the team gave their best offer already.
this won't end well
question is when will it end

the way Wolf has been drafting and the staff coaching, I think I am ok with the draft haul
Really?? IF you put lipstick on a pig it's still a pig. Drake Maye is the only reason why Wolf still have a job. A Blind monkey could have made the pick it was so obvious. Wolf and Drafting is not synonymous.

You shouldn’t create misleading hyperbolic dishonest headlines… but here we are.
I posted my opinion, and stated why
how is an opinion dishonest?
only your opinions are honest?

you and the collaboration idiot still think Wolf hasn't turned this roster around?

The whole concept makes no sense, because it's just illogical. It's basically saying 'pay him as if he's hitting the market NEXT year so that he doesn't get leapfrogged by someone else not long after signing.'

Except the problem is, it doesn't really matter what he signs for, whatever it is will be the new market line and the next top guy will want more than that. If the current best contract is at $33M or whatever, and Gonzo's "top of market" deal in 2026 would be $34M but he wants, say, $37M in order to "not be obsolete" in a year... he still will be. The next guy will look at Gonzo's $37M and say, OK, pay me $37.1M because I want to be the top. They're not gonna say "oh man, wow, well, Gonzo has too much of a buffer between him and the next guy, I guess I'm fine being 2nd place."
No wonder this contract is taking so long to get done.

If Gonzo wants to bargain under the 2027 cap then the Pats are probably saying "OK we will wait until next season when the cap number if official." This Gonzo eating his cake and wanting to keep it too just wont fly. Surely the signing bonus that Gonzo would have in hand now invested, would amount to a nice chunk of change towards being the highest paid CB in the NFL.

You must be one of Wolf's relatives. IF Maye wasn't Maye: Wolf would have conducted the Worse Draft in NFL history *For a Team selectingThird overall*. How quickly you forget...I'm surprised it's not talked about more in the NFL media.

Bye bye… like he’s gone already.

Nothing’s happened except Curren created a controversy out of whole cloth.

He was so elated anyone was making the picks in 2024 other than BB, he defended picks and decisions blindly.

Being he’s the most consistent poster in history to refuse to admit when he was wrong he needs to keep up the illusion it’s still Elliot making personnel decisions.

He’s weird… in short.

Was this even an actual report by Curran or just him theorizing...? I mean, it's Curran.

Here's the original quote, said during a TV segment: "The endgame is very simple. In my estimation, what my understanding is, Christian Gonzalez does not want his contract to be obsolete within seven months," Curran said on Arbella Early Edition. "When the new league year comes and the salary cap goes from $301 [million] to $330 million, the first corner who comes up under that new cap is going to sign for $34 [million], $35 [million]. So what Christian Gonzalez would like is not to be treated as if he's at the table in 2026, but be treated as if he's at the table in 2027."

This is the type of mindset that irritates me. Your contract is gonna be obsolete with the quickness and if you are worried about that..then football isn't your first priority now is it? If thats truly his stance, then if he tries to hold out or not play..then trade his ass. With the quickness.

lets see when Gonzo is back on the field
I stated my opinion
this won't end well

I’m totally on-board with continue paying him on his rookie contract and option / franchise for the next 3-4 years. This position of mine is not new.

the flip side is that he might sit out, and the team is thin at CB

I don't like the sound of it either...I know Patsfans are well known to discard what the media says until it bubbles over like facts: and of course they knew all along. Gonzo should not be concerned about being the Highest paid CB in the league two to three years from now. He's not the Best CB in the league right now! IF that's His stance You have to pass.

The Team has that card: which is a way to keep the Roster competitive.

A few "decent" CB players will get cut from the 90 on other teams. They could also trade a WR for a CB. CB wouldn't be a strength on the team unfortunately. BUT I don't believe for a minute Gonzo will sit out 2026.
