Why not 7 WR's on the opening day roster?

FIFY. Apart from timeframe you’re right, and my point is that we are constructing the roster for this year not for eternity.

To say we want to keep 7 WRs is to say we are collecting talent not building a team designed to win. We’d be keeping receivers just because we think they’re good or are going to be good someday, not because they give us the best offense for winning now and sustaining that winning into next year. Sustaining it into next year is what makes it tricky, because of expiring contracts.

Part of the problem may be that we are thin at other positions especially backup so there are no players for fans to be excited about keeping. Plus those other positions aren’t as exciting as WR. So we have fans wanting to collect WR talent not building a winning team. It’s the Madden Fantasy Football effect, in real life.

I’m not disagreeing but I am also saying if you had confidence that a WR was a great future prospect you wouldn’t fear having him as WR6 and need to keep him as a 7

It has nothing to do with that.

The team will pick 1 bottom of the roster development project between Crownover, Chism, Arkin etc. If they produce this year, that's great. But it doesn't matter the position because none of them will likely matter this season.

Position factored into this decision pre-covid when it wasn't so easy finding and bringing an experienced veteran off the squad easily.

DeGennaro wouldn't be more than a development project like Chism/Williams last year. He wouldn't replace Boutte.

I agreed with your point of trading Boutte before training camp, but the strongest part of your argument is gone. Boutte has been a great teammate, not a malcontent. He has no problem being here.

The strongest past of my argument was Boutte wanting to play to get paid is still there.

It would be crazy to trade Boutte now unless we win the exchange.

It would be crazy not to trade him if Williams, DeGennaro and maybe another UDFA look good. Brown on one side, Doubs on the other, Douglas in the slot… Boutte would be 4th on the depth chart and annoyed he isn’t playing enough in a contract year, then it would be crazy to lose him next year for nothing when you could have gotten a late round pick for next offseason.

Maye seems to throw high, so maybe it's not surprising Williams and Douglas has struggled with them. Maybe it';s not a coincidence.

You can get more for Boutte once the season starts, while others are getting hurt or discovering their players are disappointments. Boutte getting annoyed and being a problem is in your head, not reality.

During that time we will see how Douglas does. I'd rather have Boutte around while we find out.

No, I don’t think they’ll ruin him, because I don’t think they’ll take your advice. That’s what would ruin him.

I expect him to practice and eventually play better. We’re halfway through camp, a fair amount of time to improve.

Hopefully he will improve. When he does it might be worth taking a look at him at backup guard, depending on how that needs to be stands by then. But for now let him focus on one thing, his traditional position.

Agree that the evolving PS rules have changed how this is handled now. It’s still a choice to have those development projects on the PS not on the roster, albeit at the risk of waiver claims trying to get them moved over to the PS.

That's basically the decision. Keep a Crownover or a 7th WR to develop.

Also how Dippre looks because without a trade, I don't think one of those 3rd TE's is staying.

It's really who has the most potential regardless of position. That's sort of the point of the thread.

I'm unclear what you mean from 5 on, but agree with the first four.

He did fine as a rookie and needs reps. You can’t sit him on the bench to okay Hollins.

Not sure Bryant or Wallace were necessarily kept because they liked them more so than there was no one else at the position that didn’t suck. They would have sent them packing if they have a real nfl caliber player to keep instead.

This is a consideration. When the players we are relying on for depth at a position are shaky that’s a huge reason to keep extra players at that spot.
At LB for example we will be choosing among unknowns. It’s a good plan to keep 2 unknowns instead of one by using the last roster spots, esp since it will be a close call at cutdown at LB
But WRs get fantasy points so some fans think they are the most important position on the team.

Boutte already skipped offseason workouts and supposedly said he wanted to be traded. That wasn't my imagination.

They'll get what they can get before the cutdown to 53. Assuming the WR is as deep as it seems now then they won't wait for the season. The entire point is to get down to 53 with the best group possible.
