I'm curious on what the consensus breaking point is among PatsFans Nation with respect to a contract offer to Gonzalez.

For comparison Trent McDuffie is currently the highest paid at $31 million. Sauce is at $30 million.

Phil Perry speculates that Gonzo may be looking to reset the market among CBs given that Will Anderson is at $50 million and JSN is at $42 million.

I know there is the resign him at all costs crowd, but at some point the cap is, in fact, not crap.

RLKAG.

I would say around $36M would be my actual number.

First McDuffie isn’t really 31. He got a 4 year 124 extension with 1 year left on his deal, so it is really 5 years at about 27 per.

Gonzo has 2/23 left, or 1/5 if you ignore the 5th year option.
If he gets an extension adding 4 for 32 that’s actually 6/151 or 5/133 depending upon the 5th year option and a little less than McDufffie got.

I think there are 3 options here.
1) F IT no one is worth that money, move on.
2) Do whatever it takes. If he is worth 32 mill a year, there is virtually non negligible difference to your cap to give him 35 a year. It’s an accounting error.
3) He really doesn’t want to be here so he asks for stupid money well above the market.

Trying to parse the numbers and say I’ll go to 33 mill a year but no way he gets 34 is idiotic. In that case you are a fool because if he’s worth 33 he’s worth 34 and if he isn’t worth 34 he wasn’t worth 33.

Top CB is trent mcduffie at 31m apy...

Witherspoon should top that, so 31.5 -32m apy

Gonzo will want more, so 32ish...

The kicker is the guaranteed money... where will that land?

If he's worth 32 then he's worth 33 then he's worth 34 then he's worth 35 then he's worth 36 then he's worth 37 then he's worth 38 then he's worth 39 then he's worth 40

Its just a 1 million difference 1 million at a time. An accounting error. You can't disagree if you do your idiotic a fool

He's better than both those guys, and should and will get more.

Gonzalez has a good agent, Patriots have been trying to get this done all year, and the agent is slow-walking, because they represent Witherspoon as well. I will say, the Seahawks extending other guys before Witherspoon has been a little enlightening. There's a chance the agent is overplaying their hand a bit.

Gonzalez wants to be here, he'll be here. I'll let the people crying about money that's not theirs continue to cry about it, I guess.

Oh, and to the geniuses that have been saying 'Just bring in 2 20mAAV CBs instead' it's like Chavarious Ward and Christian Benford. Yeah, no, sorry, that's such an incredible downgrade at the position. Just say 'I don't know what a good cornerback looks like' in the future.

It's obviously a question of cap allocation. No one is crying poor for Kraft.

So you cool with 40 million? More?

So far the bell curve is about what I expected with $35 million being around the breaking point. Top CB money, but not wildly transformational for the position.

I agree with that number…it’s top CB money. I don’t have to like it though.

Would shake at 140 for 4 years or 160 for 5.

Cap is going to continue to go up.
So are contracts.
No matter what Gonzalez signs for, in 3 years it will look like a bargain.

Flat earth logic

My frugal roots question overpaying him at a cost detrimental to this teams overall fiscal (cap) health. Not sure of a number.
Any consideration to trading him to meet another need or for a draft pick(s)?

Why would you trade a 24-year old all-pro cornerback on his rookie contract, coming off his best year - one of the top-3 CBs in football at worst....for anything?

Only thing I would add is that both Witherspoon and Gonzalez are in another category than McDuffie. I'd say they clearly surpass him.

The cap is up 7-8% over the last year so if you factor that into what Stingley got more than a year ago, $32m sounds like a good # for the top CB. I just think Witherspoon and Gonzalez are both better than Stingley and McDuffie.

Stingley's very good. I think Gonzalez is better, but at least there's a discussion to be had.
McDuffie is certainly at least a tier below that, maybe more.
