PATRIOTS NEWS OFFICIAL: Patriots Finally Acquire AJ Brown

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
I find it hard to put any stock in projecting how strong/weak a draft will be in 2 years. How do we know what underclassman could emerge and declare early for that draft?
Sure you can call certain positions weak during that draft year (like QBs this past draft or last), but to call a whole draft weak 2 years out seems pretty ridiculous.
You know Burrow was rated as a day 3 pick before his last/breakout season right?

I agree. As was already pointed out in this thread 'a first round draft pick' could mean Cole Strange, or it could mean Drake Maye. Just because a draft class is said to be weak doesn't mean you won't find a diamond in the rough. Just because a draft class is said to be strong doesn't mean you don't end up with a bust as your pick.

The only thing you do know for sure is you get five years of controlled salary, which IMO is a pretty valuable thing.

Whether AJB is worth more than that is, of course, something worthy of debate. Or at least it was, till the trade was called in to NFL HQ. Now AJB is a Patriot, so of course, LFG!

I like the trade.
Makes a good team better, I don’t see how anyone could argue that.
I like deferring the 1st to 2028, but people are talking like every player in the 27 draft will be a HOFer, and 28 will all be scrubs.
It’s comical.

Not with the the current Incentives to stay in and get paid based on eligibility. Especially for guys who are not guaranteed First Rounders...my point: some players are going to be tempted to return based on the new rules.

This is a very valid point, kudos.

Isn't it too early to project the 2028 class anyway? 2027 is projected to be very strong so guessing that 2028 being weaker than that shouldn't be much of a reach but yeah that doesn't mean the 2028 class will suck.

I will bet all my worldly possessions that the 2028 draft will produce many good NFL players from every rd.

Never even noticed the kudos button before.
I just lost my kudos virginity on you, yikes

Agree. We're much better today than 2 days ago, and I think AJ's performance will even improve this year vs last with a more accurate QB and better overall offense.

We'll miss our 1st rounder in 2028, but it's an underrated dividend is not having to pay for 2 years, and very unusual. We get the services of Lomu for 2 years, and the services of our '27 1st rounder for 1 year. Those 2 guys in conjunction with AJ could put us over the top before we have to sacrifice anything but a low 5th after this season. Didn't have to give up anything in the draft last month. The time is now.

If 2027 is loaded, I'd guess some players might wait for 28 to garner a higher draft status and $$.

I'm not crazy about him wearing #1. I guess he hasn't gotten JE11's blessing yet.

EDIT: I was out all day yesterday so I'm just seeing this now.

The Eagles aren’t responsible for the void years because they hadn’t exercised the option bonuses associated with them. The Eagles are responsible for his 2022 and 2024 signing bonuses and his 2025 option bonus. And since any bonus can only be spread for 5 years maximum for salary cap purposes, none of those items extended into the void years (for example, the 2025 option bonus would have been amortized from 2025-2029, but it’s now 2025-2027 for the Eagles because of the trade).

The 2026 option bonus and beyond, the Pats are responsible for, and those would extend into the void years (2026 option bonus, the last year is 2030 which is the first void year; 2027 option bonus will amortize through 2031 which is now 2 void years, etc.).
Thanks for the clarification. I'm still learning this stuff. Am I correct in my understanding that the huge cap hit would strike once the pats exercise his 2028 option? So, if they decide to walk after the 2027 season they are free and clear. Yes/No?

The Reason I wanted us not to part with the 27 First-round pick. The 2028 Draft is going to be weak.
There are usually 32 players good enough to qualify for the use of a 1st round pick.

I am not convinced that NE will reach the 2026 post season so the 2027 pick should be better anyway.

Is A.J. Brown still on the Eagles?? He'll be the difference maker with our Daunting Schedule.

Switch QBs in those 2 games.
How does Maye do behind the Eagles Oline with that run game game and those receiving weapons?

How does Hurts do behind our Oline and with our weapons?
This is the same argument back in the Bledsoe years.

Blame everyone else but the QB. McDaniel's doesnt know it but he is a dead man walking.

I Blame McDaniels for our SB loss no adjustments whatsoever. Sea Chicken DC owned him... Maye Day and A.J. will carry him this year. We'll win not because of McDaniels but in spite of.

Not sure what Drew has to do with this.
So you honestly think that Hurts would’ve performed better in last years SB?
I am not absolving Maye of blame. He had a rough playoffs, and a very rough SB, but to pretend his situation was good is pretty blind. The Oline was nothing short of horrific in the SB. No QB would’ve won that game for us. Not Mahomes, not Montana, not Brady!

Its speculation that will always be unproven.
