PATRIOTS NEWS OFFICIAL: Patriots Finally Acquire AJ Brown

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
Let's make a deal. Anyone bummed about the player or the trade should not revel in any of the success the Pats and Maye have on plays that involve AJB. Take a pee break, grab another snack or beer out of the fridge, have a fond and solemn remembrance of Kashon Boutte, and join us for the next series.
You are wasting your breath. They ***** because they like *****ing. They ***** because the patriots did something. They would ***** if the patriots did nothing. They are only happy when they are happy.

Completely agree, they're more than a receiver away from a fully complete team.

How many fully complete teams are there?

If Maye is a top 3 QB, the current roster is good enough to compete at high levels.

I care more about the Patriots being a good team and winning games than "winning the deal"

I would say the Eagles slightly won this deal but who cares if it helps the team stay a contender and the QB develop, we don't have Brady anymore and can't expect Drake to turn water into wine.

I feel better about it getting a proven solid player now than sticking using the pick for a WR in 2 years that might not even be able to play in the league.

We need to get over the obsession with winning every deal and be happy to pay a slight premium to get a good player.
Agree. If AJ's health holds up for 3 years, the deal is win-win. He'll be 29 this season, 30 next season, 31 in 2028. The Eagles win because they got him for a 1, got 4 years, then sold him for a 1 and a 5. We win because we got a WR1 who can still play at a perfect point in our team's development, at good contract terms, and who Vrabel knows very well.

What are people complaining about.

We gave up 1st rd picks for HCs, for cameras recording from the wrong location, and physics.

We give up a 1 rd pick for one of the best WRs in the game 2 years from now and it's thr end of the world?

I am not particularly a fan of this trade. But I hope our return on investment from our lost 2028 1st round pick will exceed:

2014 - Dominique Easley
2015 - Malcom Brown
2016 - the Ideal Gas Law
2017 - traded for Brandin Cooks
2018 - Isaiah Wynn, Sony Michel
2019 - N'Keal Harry
2020 - traded back for Kyle Duggar, and part of trade up for Josh Uche
2021 - Mac Jones
2022 - Cole Strange

I am willing to accept that AJ Brown - even past his prime and on hobbled knees - may provide more value than any of those vaunted 1st round picks.

Who is this guy ? Competitive for a championship ? We got to the championship game last year WITHOUT Brown.
Who am I? In this context, I am merely whatever words I choose to post for my own amusement. I assume everyone else is the same. Those who imagine their performance here represents their actual identitiy are deluded, I hope, for their sake.

And yes, we did get to the Super Bowl last season, by fortuitous happenstance. I would probably say, given the various misimpressions that serendipity has inspired...."unfortunately."

They couldn’t get him for a second.
Sure life would be great if you got things for less than what they actually cost, but in reality people who think that way get no things.
We will never know. But I do know this trade was the worst kept secret only topped by spygate

Exactly. They are not. They are but bets on unproven NFL talent, the majority of which don't work out.

Exhibit A - our 1st round picks the last 15 years:

  • 2026: Caleb Lomu, OT, Utah (Pick No. 28)
  • 2025: Will Campbell, OT, LSU (Pick No. 4)
  • 2024: Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina (Pick No. 3)
  • 2023: Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon
  • 2022: Cole Strange, OL, Tennessee at Chattanooga
  • 2021: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
  • 2019: N'Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State
  • 2018: Sony Michel, RB, Georgia & Isaiah Wynn, OL, Georgia
  • 2015: Malcom Brown, DL, Texas
  • 2014: Dominique Easley, DL, Florida
  • 2012: Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse & Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama

I'd take AJ Brown -- a proven high-level talent with an expected couple solid years left -- over everyone on that list except Maye and Gonzalez.
You'd take him over Chandler Jones and Hightower?

A DE like Jones is very hard to find in the NFL today

11 seasons and 112 sacks.

Are you being serious?

Cool and if they wouldn’t have traded him to you for a second are you comfortable with a Boutte/Doubs top tier duo going into next season? Because that sounds like a major step back

It might be a step back at receiver, but Diggs is available for a contract & he won’t cost you a first round pick in 2028 for 2 years of service & a 31 year receiver

What was Philly going to do if we said no?
It didn’t sound like we had any competition for Brown

Why do you think that is?

Brown
Doubs
Hollins
Boutte
Douglas
Williams

I didn't know Pats Fan 2 was a TED officer

And they negotiated for months. Not sure why secrecy would matter.
We know now though. If they could have gottem him for less, they would have.

For the next 3 years we get our WR1 for 1/3 the money that most teams PAY that position.
Also factor in we deferred the 1st round pick to 2028 whick makes it equivalent to a 2027 2nd in the trade value chart.
The AJ Brown trade could end up looking a very smart deal when we look back on it as long as he performs up to his usual standards.
This.

Not to mention the impact he will have on our run game. Baldy called him the best blocking WR in the League.

I posted this on another thread, but re-upping it here - doesn't look like much of a block - but the key is he moved just right and got the lineman in transition.

Brown stays blocking for way longer than most WRs, and here it leads to a TD.

Besides having strong hands, his strength shows up AFTER he catches the ball, breaking tackles. Short slant throws, he’s gonna catch it and fight for more yardage. Runs a curl, catches the ball, spins and breaks the tackle most of the time. 6’1” 225, just powerful.
Unlike a certain other WR here that always trips and falls after catching the ball.

You understand that every time a trade happens the team receiving the player was the one that was willing to give the most right?
Diggs is older.

I am confused about the cap hit situation. I am hearing multiple different things about his contract here. I will just assume it to be a 3 year deal and that be the end of it. Which is fine as that is all within the Drake window.

Pats now have a huge discount at QB and at WR1 for the next 3 years. They should have an advantage over most NFL teams.

Yes, only because Jones was a headcase and we let him go to Arizona for that reason (but a tremendous player otherwise).

My point isn't that I would choose AJ Brown over every first round player. It's the simple point that the probabilities of success with a 1st round pick are under 33%. Meaning, there are times when it's a sensible mathematic gamble. Currently, AJ Brown is 28 years old, has an established record of success, has a skill set well-matched to Maye, and cap numbers that are reasonable.

Under these terms, giving a 1st round pick is not an enormous overpay -- because the chances of a Hightower in any given 1st round pick are like under 15% -- those players come once a decade or so, right?

To answer the question of that video - no, that's still Amon-Ra St. Brown, but AJ Brown is definitely in the top 10.
