Southampton in the 2nd tier of English soccer was DQ’d from the final for the last promotion spot to the Premier league, which is estimated to be worth $200M. Because a guy was hiding behind a tree. First round draft picks as a penalty will be a thing of the past.

Lol made me think about our punishment. There are no draft picks in international soccer though.

Still a crazy penalty.

NFL owners were upset the Patriots were coming off 3 rings in six years, had two #1 picks and looked to have an unbeatable team in 2007... so they docked the team for an unenforced rule that every team engaged in.

Not so different was the Patriots having possession of two #1 picks, coming off another ring in 2014 and the owners felt the need to dock them again for an imaginary infraction.

NFL owners had to put a restrictor plate on the Patriots, they weren't allowed to have multiple first round picks... that would have been unfair to the competitive balance and "parity."

**** it, just switch to Bournemouth.

Fantastic team and style of football , will be interesting to see how they do next season with a new head coach.

They have a good, recent history of getting the right guy for their club.

Reminder: the problem was not what they did, but where.

And "where" was RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN. How the hell could anyone call that "spying"?? As I said, BS.

FWIW, every team STILL does this, they just get the footage from the NFL directly. Every play, with down & distance is available from every angle. I would bet that today's videos are even better for scouting the opposing teams than it was back when they used their own cameraman.

Spygate was BS concocted by a crooked Jets fan who happened to get appointed commissioner. Goodell is the root of all of the **** that has been used to attempt to smear the Patriots' incredible legacy.

I loved how much he got booed during the draft

I was lucky enough to go to the 28-3 superbowl in Houston and he was booed mercilessly. He tried to play it off but it was easy to see he was upset

I can promise you he does not care, and happily accepts being the heel. If he showed a hint of being upset, it was to sell fans the illusion that their participation was having an effect lol. Theater.

That’s his job. He does the owners’ bidding and plays the heel to take the pressure off them.

The Patriots got hit hard because of their success. Other owners were jealous and struck at the Patriots through their puppet, Goodell. So people wear the Goodell clown shirt when he’s not the power behind the NFL. The people truly to blame stay hidden in the shadows.

I’d do it too for $50 million a year. People could boo me all they wanted and I laugh all the way to the bank.

All intelligent fans in existence know Spygate was a complete sham. There wasn't even any clarity around exactly where filming could occur until 2007 when the league closed loopholes in the rulebook regarding filming and advance scouting that were being taken advantage of by some teams. Other teams including the Pats were complaining about it. The famous memo came out because of these complaints.

With that said Bill should have treaded a lot more carefully. He should have been aware that other teams were jealous of the Patriots and wanted to do anything to bring them down. I think this jealousy goes back to SB36 when the Patriots ended the era of big stars and big names winning Super Bowls and I think a lot of people still resent the Pats organization to this day for ending all of that. If Bill wasn't such a contrarian who just had to be smarter than everyone else all he had to do was make one phone call to the league to clarify that memo and there would have been no issue.

+1 +1

Not to mention the brand new (at the time) HC of the NYJ was the former NEP DC and knew all the tricks (and no doubt benefitted from them before he squealed).

Punishment for spying in any sport is beyond stupid. Teams should really invest in an $18 an hour rent-a-security guard.

Leagues should remove any type of language about this stuff from their rulebooks. The problem would resolve itself on its own.

Yep.

I can understand and agree with a severe punishment for spying on another team.

But it isn't spying when a man is standing in full view of 80,000 people, not to mention a dozen or so TV cameras on a live, nationally televised sporting contest.

Spygate was not fabricated to punish the Pats.

It happened.

The NFL warned teams about filming on sidelines and BB ignored them because he was pixxed at Mangina for taking the Jets job when BB told him not to. Also, Mangina tried to hire Pats coaches on the NE plane return trip back from the Denver post season loss. Plus, because Mangina stole a NEP laptop.

The 2005 Pats @ Jets game (I was there) was the first reference of spying.
