Its do or die for Asante's Future in New England

It's tough to find a consistent corner in this league right now. To me the only diference in Asante from this year to last is the number of INT's. Asante doesn't need to get INT's to prove he's having a great season. His coverage has been good and consistent. I think he deserves the money, and the Pats are going to pay.

The Pats will pay him IF it is reasonable...and NOT breaking teh cap structure teh team has...I think that is claer..if he wishes BIG BUCKS from another..teh door is there..it is that simple...

let's not kid ourselves....Asante is going to the highest bidder....TB will make him look like a fool if the pats face him...

3-9-NE 19 (9:22) (Shotgun) 10-E.Manning pass deep right to 17-P.Burress for 19 yards, TOUCHDOWN Burress.

Nobody's Perfect

That shot is a perfect example of the idiotic style of play advocated in this thread. If Asante jumps routes and gets burned like he did above we could be out of the playoffs. It's a TEAM D, not a D predicated on an individual geting INTs to pad stats and get big bucks.

I'm amazed at how Pats fans don't know their coach's philosophy.

Samuel is an outstanding cb, but he's looking to break the bank. Somebody will pay him, not the Pats. Remember the Pats won a SB with Earthland Moreland in the backfield.....they'll be OK either way.

asante is getting big money no matter what he does this postseason. just depends from whom

I don't agree with this. If Asante doesn't come up big, then teams will look at him and say he's a product of the system who can't perform under pressure. If he DOES come up big, then teams will have to question whether or not its the system or him.

Personally, he still doesn't tackle very well and he gambles on too many plays.

How many times have we heard Belichick tell his players; "Do your job. Just do your job!"

I have said it twice on posts, and more importantly Miguel has said so too.

The Pats can afford to pay ALL their FAs and resign them. They can keep all their big CAP hits too, if they renegotiate to good, but not great money in 2008.

Do any of you realize that at the start of the off season, the Pats will have almost $12 million in CAP room for 2008, and that INCLUDES owing Stallworth, Washington and Colvin almost $15 million between the three of them. Cut them, and the CAP room jumps to almost $27 million.

They could sign Randy, Asante, Donte, Rosey and Kelly with oodles to spare for a Karlos Dansby and/or a Jason Taylor. Why don't you guys look at the numbers BEFORE you pontificate about affording anybody. Now Asante may demand the absolute top dollar, to play for a loser, (and not collect more than a couple years of the contract, before being squeezed out), or he can sign for top five CB money and stay. But to say the Pats can't afford him is ludicrous. If he, Randy, Donte, Rosey. Kelly sign long term deals, their cost for 2008 in CAP terms probably drops below 2007, and the Pats ended the 2007 season with a spare $5-6 million dollars of CAP room. That they presumably found a way to carryover.

According to Miguel, the Pats have already picked up Washington's option and paid it to him. If you look, Washington's SB amortization has a whopping 300K left. He does hit the Pats cap for 1.9 million next season though. That is really expensive for a STs player.

I think that Stallworth is gone. I don't think the Pats pick up his option because they have Washington and Jackson as well. And the Pats want to get Jackson in there. I could see the Pats bringing back Gaffney, but who knows.

I see Colvin being given an extension where his contract is re-structured to give the Pats more cap room. Why do people think that the Pats will cut Colvin just because of his cap number? its non-sensical.

Now, AZPatsfan, I think you'll find that MANY people understand the cap situation very well. What YOU ignore is that there are still a bunch of NLTBE bonuses that were earned this year that will be applied to the cap for next season. I believe that Randy Moss' 2 million in incentives might be one of them, unless the Pats put them in as LTBE. Which they could have.

But I know that Brady, Light, and others have bonuses from being Pro-Bowl selections, and how the team does in the play-offs. That will LESSEN the cap figure for next year. What we don't know is how much of the 5 million or so the Pats had in free money this year was pushed out into next year since there weren't any articles on this. If the Pats were able to push most, if not all, of it into next season, then that will help off-set the LTBE bonuses.

12 million is a lot. But not really. Especially when you consider that the Patriots currently have the #7 pick that that pick will take up a bit of that 12 million. I believe its in the 4-5 million range, but I am not positive.

I do not recall saying such a thing. There must be some confusion here.

I think Asante is gone next year, last year soured him to our FO, just my hunch.

I think Moss will be back

Do you realize that being $12 million under the current 2008 cap does NOT necessarily mean that the Patriots will be $12 million under their 2008 adjusted cap when free agency begins??

Things will change between now and then.

It's good to know htat the Pats paid for production, with Kelly Washington.

The figures I quoted INCLUDED the NLTBE bonues for Randy. Effectively the Pats paid Asante and Randy $13 million in 2007 and had spare CAP of $+ 5 million. Do you think they could negotiate a pair of long term contracts and have a CAP hit that high in 2008 for both? Its possible, but doubtful.

I had been wondering how the Pats would carryover the money. It's good to hear an unheralded but REAL contributor got some of it.

I also think this spells the end, and retirement, for Larry Izzo, and his $2 million payday. Clearly,he is not what he was. Pierre and Kelly have passed him by as leaders of the STs coverage. And Ellis and Willie Andrews along with Kevin have the return positions well manned. So there is another hidden million or so to add to the CAP for 2008.

Samuel is a post season monster. He had a nice streak of pick 6s going until Chargers threw his way 0 times.

hes always played great in postseason and made big plays
