Of all players on this team who may be on the verge of finding a new team next year I think Samuel is in the spotlight as its a make em or break em for either getting the BIG bucks he wants or having to say goodbye.

I think in order for the FO to even consider giving him ridiculous money he demands whether its a long term deal with big bucks spread out over several years or a short term with huge numbers of cash, He is going to have to show the near Shutdown Corner ability of last year in the 2 or 3 most important games coming up starting this week.

I think he has had a good year so far this year, but last year was better.

A 2,3 or more interception playoff showing plus continuous great coverage of opposing playoff WRs that he is assigned to in the next few games is probably the only way to make the FO make it a MUST to keep him.

Anything less than a brilliant postseason says he most likely gone without much consideration.

IMO Its now a 2 or 3 game stretch that is going to decide whether they definately keep Samuel here or not.

Its showtime Asante - You want the top dollar? - Then put up or shut up!

asante is getting big money no matter what he does this postseason. just depends from whom

That is true, but I think this FO only parts with decent amounts of cash to Samuel if he earns it in the BIGGEST games this year.

I think his play in particular will be under scrutiny one way or the other since he wants to be the highest paid player on this team - He gotta prove its worth the money first,Last years performance was definately worthy of big money - I don't think he earned it this year - Yet

Hopefully he doesn't think like you. All he needs to do is his job as BB determines it for each game plan. Don't want to see him gambling. They have already made their decision as to what is as much as they will pay him, or any corner. His market remains to be seen. That could be more potentially adversely impacted by a mistake prone performance in the playoffs than simply not making any mistakes as part of a solid team defense. With this offense, it's more important to not give up big plays on defense.

What a negative attitude it is to think (or in this case, write) "this player BETTER come through or else!" Seriously, I have no thoughts that any of our players "Better" come through in the upcoming playoffs. I may think the offense or the defense better step up but I'm also fairly confident that they will. None of the games will be lost by one player, of that we can be sure.

I may get pissed off with some of our players during a game when they screw up, but in between games, I never have lingering animousity toward any of our players. Why would I? Why do you?

I think you are wrong. The front office knows Samuel well after five years, they don't need any more games at all to make up their minds.

In fact, if Asante bombs this postseason he is MORE likely to be back. The Pats already have a definite offer in mind I am sure, matching his valeu to the team. A great postseason won't affect his value to the Patriots, but it might well raise what other teams perceive as his value. So a great postseason makes it more likely we get outbid, an ordinary one gives us a better chance of being competitive. Though probably not by that much.

Just the way I look at it is if Asante somehow gets burned deep on his assigned WR or gives up big yardage more than on occasion in these next few games his value at his position on the team becomes more replacable and less chance of deep negotiations for more money and what he wants in pay may not be there if his performance is anything less than stellar IMO.

Just like in any job the harder you work and the better your work shows usually means more money in your paycheck - An NFL player is a guy with a job just like any other person in the working world.

Guys like Brady weren't making mucho dollars right out of college,In fact I bet Tom was making near minimum salary in 2000 (Miguel would be good to ask that question to) - Seymour got a nice increase a few years ago as well,Both guys played well enough to earn the big money they are making today - Its a simple fact.

The mans getting set for life after this season whether its the Pats or someone else. Honestly I don't think you guys can afford to lose Samuel with whats behind him on the team

Well I don't know that any huge performances by him would help him get more than they're willing to give him, but since it's not my position to worry about that stuff I'll just hope you're right and that he does have an excellent playoff with some interceptions. :rocker:

But it seems like you have animousity toward Asante. That makes no sense to me since he's one of your (our) players. I just think it's foolish to have any bad feeling about one of your own players.

You didn't exlain why you DO have such feelings.

What is a "mangenious" ?

Does Asante always line up against the oppposing teams #1 WR? I mean, why was Hobbs on Plexico last week? And I have seen it before. Any insight?

I don't dislike Asante but I do DISLIKE a player on this team who may jeopardize the cap space without regard to this teams future only to stuff his pockets with so much cash that he has not earned yet which can only be done by similar play at his position in a number of years in a row like a Champ Bailey or Nate Clements

Remember years ago when Asante was an afterthought in the secondary - People barely took notice of his average play until his breakout season last year and I think he took a minor step backwards this year although he has performed well but not as good as in 2006.

If he has an outstanding performance in these upcoming playoff games worthy of the title shutdown corner than I think its a no brainer to give his very nice cash and with a nice long contract to boot but money spread out of these years without danger to the cap - What did he want last year, like 10 Million$? - that was a ridiculous amount to ask for in a guy with 1 solid year and the rest average before that.

To me thats selfish and not the Patriot way,If he wants to stay a Patriot he needs to forget that stuff and negotiate in realistic fashion,Winning is the most important thing to an average Patriots player, not the money - Ask Randy Moss and Tedy Bruschi that.

If all Patriots players negotiated the way Bruschi did with getting good money but not trying to overdue it and for the good of the team yet give himself a nice financial situation anyway and to do it all without the advice or a worthless agent this team would be a contender for a very very long time from now till ???

God I hope when Tedy retires we get his clone.

exactly.. AS will be one of the highest paid players in the league next year (above most qb's), and no, it wont be here.... he wont jeopardize our cap; he wont be here. period.
if anyone has money to make in this postseason, it's gay.

Sounds to me like the real point to you isn't Asante needs to play great to impress the Patriots, he needs to play great to make you yourself feel better about it if he re-signs with the Pats.

OK...I agree with a lot of what you're saying. but I'm not worried about Kraft over-paying him to the point it jeopordizes our cap and therefor, our ability to put the best team possible on the field. If samuel demands too much money, say good-bye Asante! Will it make him a bad guy if he goes for the money and leaves? I don't think so. Not every Patriot wants to take the home-town discount to remain on this team and that's not a bad thing.

It's amazing that some posters think that it's 1988,

not 2008......Asante doesn't have to "show" anything

Now write this down:If AS gets a Nate Clements offer from another team.......He's gone.....

The Patriots will NOT match.....got it?.....They will

NOT match.THe Pats aren't going to blow-up their

salary structure on a CB,no matter how good he thinks he is......It's not the Patriot Way.

If Asante is reasonable,I think the Pats will come up a little on their Dre Bly-type offer of last year.

If not....he's gone, without blinking an eye.

After all, this is the whore with "get paid" as a tatoo.

Good point, and don't forget that Tedy came back
from a stroke, was a good soldier and Kraft rewarded him with a 1 Mil bonus,

Now,THAT'S the Patriot Way!

Cornerback is one of the most important positions on the team, if you have talent there you should try to retain. There is a reason teams are willing to pay him 10mil/yr contracts. The reason is not because said organizations are clueless.

Agreed. I don't think a big post season is going to make a difference. He's going to get paid either way. Top corners are hard to find.
