I thought it was a designed play.

Nope, he flipped the play (Think it was Hooper flipping the formation to the other side) Maye went for the handoff, RB wasn't there.

Taking off was the right thing to do in that situation, but he needs to protect the ball.

How hard is it to run slant passes instead of your QB into traffic for a fumble on your own 30?

You're making it way too hard on your defense when your offense turns it over in your own territory.
