Is Campbell’s knee fully healed? And back at full strength?
I don’t know the protocols for MCL injuries, nor do I have any idea about what resources he would have available as a pro athlete and how those might modify the rehab plan. So I don’t know to what extent his conditioning might have been affected by his injury and the recovery time. The important question is whether he might have any strength deficit, either because of the injury itself or because his strength and conditioning routine had to be curtailed while he was recovering from the injury.
I’m sure he has some psychological impact from it, as he regains confidence in it.
Add in the possibility that he also had the flu and there’s a lot of potential physical factors that might have affected his performance tonight.
On top of that I think he was going against Khalil Mack at least part of the time tonight, and the rest of the Chargers pass rushers are pretty good too, so as a rookie Campbell had a big challenge apart from any physical issues.
I trust the coaching staff to evaluate his performance, and his physical condition, and make appropriate plans and decisions. But I’m also wondering if there might be lingering physical and mental issues that would make it a good idea to shut him down for the rest of the season, and plug Vederian Lowe back in at LT. I wouldn’t be terribly upset if the team chose to shut him down. Whether they shut him down or coach him up I think it’s clear that we need to see better OL play next week.
