In both situation, the team did not have the chance to pick the wrong player.and much credit needs to go to Mayo for having us 4-13 again and leaving us with great draft position and with HUGE cap capital available for at least two years.
Not every team thought what Maye was in 2024 would evolve into what he is now. To your point, some teams were sold on Trey Lance like SF. Some weren't and did not take him.Teams without a QB cannot afford to pass on QBs like Maye.
No you don't if you think he will not work out. For example, if the Jets had any serious reservations for Zach Wilson they should have passed. Drafts are about managing risks and making the best decision on the players available. It may not work out, but it's hard to find a QB, teams like the Jets and Bills and Phins went 25 years without one, so you gotta take him.
Whats worse is blowing a high pick on a QB who either is a risk or will be surrounded by a **** team and organization. There are a ton of NFL teams that can't honestly admit that to themselves or don't know the difference. Patriots got lucky.A blown first round pick is not anywhere near as bad as passing on a future stud and then never finding a QB. That's misery. Anyone who did such a thing should be fired immediately.
I don't think any pick is a pure no brainer so we'll disagree on that point.
Every team has priorities and needs and those are always debated and discussed internally. There was talk of the NEP trading down although I don't know how serious they were.
Yea there was no way BB would have picked Maye. That's just Cult of Belichick talk, they want to pretend that Belichick would have picked him even though Belichick said he was the " 6th best pocket passer in the Draft." and dissed him on draft day.
There's actually a pretty simple solution to the MCDaniels leaving scenario: coach salaries are not subject t to any cap so Kraft can simply make him an offer he can't refuse.I think there are two things that could derail us going forward. #1 is the thing that can destroy any team, no matter how good: injuries to key players and #2 is something very specific to us: Josh McDaniels leaving.
Other than that I love where we're at going into next year, even with a more difficult schedule. We have draft capitol, we don't have any major difference makers as free agents in 2026, we have a lot of cap space. Things look promising!
I took this same position before the draft. I wrote about it here. If you explain to your fanbase that you passed on Maye in order to take McCarthy and 2 or 3 other players, you deserve to be fired. Maye was not a slam dunk. There were plenty of questions about him. There were questions about the other two guys as well. Heck, some here perceive Belichick as slagging Maye when he was only critiquing his pocket presence. Otherwise, he actually said Maye makes amazing throws, can throw the ball at every level all over the field, and not only that, he's incredibly accurate, and that he has outstanding athletic ability. So... let's say you're Belichick and your favorite guy (Daniels) is off the board. You have questions about Maye because he has happy feet and he abandons the pocket at the first whiff of trouble. You recognize these are traits that may make him fail in the NFL.Not every team thought what Maye was in 2024 would evolve into what he is now. He's not going anywhere for a few reasons. First, Josh is grateful to be back in the league which pretty much had him black balled after what happened in LV. If it weren't for Vrabel, he'd still be at home watching like us.I think there are two things that could derail us going forward. #1 is the thing that can destroy any team, no matter how good: injuries to key players and #2 is something very specific to us: Josh McDaniels leaving.
I don't agree. I actually think Bo Nix might be the 2nd best QB out of that draft. Yes Williams and Daniels have the physical talent but it seems Nix has more to offer between the ears. Daniels can't sustain because of his slight frame and Williams simply has a hard time playing within structure.I think Maye will be the best of the 3. But he required more work and had less experience than the other 2. Personally I think Caleb Williams and Daniels will both be superstars in this league, both will be top 6 or 7 QBs, and I've said that since even before they were drafted. If the teams redrafted knowing everything we know now, Maye would go first, but at the end of the day, there was nothing wrong with the evaluation on draft day.
Daniels and Williams are going to be just behind Maye at the top of the league with only Josh Allen, Burrow and Mahomes in the same conversation.
The 6 of them will have cleared Herbert, Lamar, Jordan Love and Stroud.

2nd reason is that Josh, Vrabel and Maye can do this for a long time. Even if BB came calling if he somehow got the Giants job, Josh would decline due to his loyalty to Vrabel.
Williams is having a fine year. Both Nix and Williams are statistically very similar, and their teams are winning. Nix does have 4 more INTs, but my problem with Nix is some inaccuracy.I don't agree. I have to imagine that Josh is also in a place where he realizes: he ain't HC material and the stress of finding that out again is simply not worth the uproot and relocation.

I mean, the whole 'lawsuit' thing sort of did the ostracizing for him.Amazing how things worked out. Thank God Vrabel didn't take an HC job last year.
And Mayo did us a solid by showing he was completely in over his head. If he had enough coaching/team/staff building acumen to get the team to 6 or 7 wins it would have been awkward to say the least to move on and snag Vrabes
Speaking of which, does anyone know what Mayo is up to these days?
Given how things turned out there's no reason fans should continue to harbor ill will, but has he ostracized himself from Pats Nation?
Just checked. Josh McD has 3 titles as a coordinator (6 overall fyi) which is 2nd to Steve Spagnuolo who has 4 as a D coordinator (Giants, Chiefs). What's the upside for him? You would have thought he learned from the Denver experience, but his time in LV was a worse disaster. He is despised in LV.
You would think it would be a better gig to be considered "the" or one of the best OCs in the league for what is poised to be a franchise that could be on another dynastic run.
How many rings does he currently have? I'd venture he could be in the running for most Super Bowl rings of any coordinator in history.
The Vikings offered 3 first round picks plus pick swaps later, which a number of people here called " the haul," and wanted them to take, and the Giants offered 2 first round picks and a 3rd to move from 6 to 3. I was opposed to the Patriots taking any trade offers and wanted them to pick Maye. And I said in a post the other day that I wouldn't take any trade offer for Maye, period, I wouldn't take 10 first round picks for him.
Minnesota could double their original offer and it wouldn’t be enough.Per reports, those late swaps had MIN getting draft capital back, so this should say "minus".
