....
the Pittsburgh Steelers got Aaron Rogers a new receiver.
The team was awarded former Minnesota VIkings wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers Tuesday. The addition came amid a flurry of moves that also saw the Steelers waive veteran cornerback Darius Slay. Additionally, the Steelers are signing cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to the active roster from the practice squad, a source told ESPN......

Do you think the Patriots should have any interest in Darius Slay. I think Shefter already posted that they should try and get him (see below).
- Pats are no longer at top of the Waiver Wire (maybe last if I understand system right); so at this point - probably better to just wait & see if he clears waivers rather than put in a bid; and then just deal with him as a FA.

Nope, he is slayed and cooked.

I can't imagine a single position on this team right now where a cut player is going to be more worthy of playing time than the top two guys currently filling that role.

Done/toast/kaput ...

Hes the equivalent of potato salad thats been sitting on a picnic table in direct sunlight for 8 hours in a 100° heatwave...

His days in Pittsburgh were numbered when they brought in Assante Jr

I think Shefter (or someone commenting on Shefter X post); meant he would be useful as a CB 5+ in the depth chart for playoff run / injury-emergencies. Not for replacing any of our existing first line guys.

I dont know enough about him to even think more than... if Pitt cast him off; why would we want him?

(but I started the thread to see what others thought - so far validated)

I would agree, and up that to the top 3 guys, Gonzo, Davis, Jones.
but the team seemingly does not have much faith in Austin or Battle.
Would 4 games of Slay as a vet insurance against injury be a wise move by the Pats? would Slay have interest in coming in and seeing if he fits into the system and maybe gets some playoff money or maybe even a ring?
Pats obviously have the money to pay him over the rest of the season.

He was awful with the Steelers. Unless we feel like we can convert him to safety or something

The price paid for inserting a new player into a rotation and locker room, when that player isn't worthy of a roster spot from a mediocre rival, doesn't even begin to add up.

Okay, pray we think maybe the best way to allay fray fears and say, Slay, we are getting better every gray day and we'll play on today and tomorrow, but nay, turn away and not pay Slay.

Steelers claim veteran WR Thielen, cut CB Slay

Wouldn't hurt. He's got championship pedigree, has played alot of great ball in his career. He could be a great signing for the stretch run here... added depth at CB..

Really think losing Marcellus dial at CB to an ACL in camp affected the CB depth.. he was having a great camp and would likely have been a better option than autstin or woods.. behind gonzo, Davis and Jones.. I don't hate the idea of slay..but he'd likely be signed to the should Vrabel see the move beneficial.. JMO

I think almost anybody is better than Alex Austin for dept: I've Never been a Fan of Austin.

You'd have a better chance of convincing me that signing him would be a good idea if you said "it would go up the ass of Tomlin like a sideways 2x4"

Agreed. I think dial could be an underrated piece moving forward as a potential cb4 and one of the last salvageable non Maye picks from 2024. He looked good in the junk buffalo win last year and i believe had a good camp until the injury

It may be true Slay is cooked what is also true is the Steelers' scheme has been facing serious criticism all year and their D is not good. After all, Slay was good- not great at Philly last year so not sure he's completely cooked. Worth a meeting/tryout IMO.

Considering we don't have much proven talent beyond out top 5 in the secondary and maybe a veteran presence who has some gas in the tank and playoff experience could be helpful.

Eagles (and KC) seemingly find a way to pick guys like this up, and they contribute.

I think we're in a serious situation if any of our top 3 CBs go down. I don't see any playing time-worthy depth behind them. BUT the top 3 is also sooooo good that I don't see any playing time to offer anyone either without an injury. So it's in that weird spot where a signing could be useful but it's not a hugely appealing situation for the player compared to other teams where there could be an opportunity to get some actual playing time.

I'm not a scout and I don't religiously watch PIT play so I can't accurately comment on how washed Slay is or isn't. If he has something left on tape, I have to think there's a contender that might have more playing time to offer him without needing an injury that may or may not (hopefully not!!) happen in the future to open it up. I'd do a proper assessment and if they think he's got anything left at least offer him the chance to come here as CB4. I imagine he'd decline but if there aren't any appealing situation he wants to sign on with right now you could keep tabs on him and re-approach him if an injury does happen.

If they think he's toast then just keep it moving. Our DB depth behind the main 5 guys of Gonzo/Davis/Jones/Hawkins/Woodson right now is Pettus, Charles Woods, Miles Battle and Schooler. Pettus has shown flashes but isn't a CB like Slay. Woods and Schooler are kicking game players. Battle is a gameday unactive unless injuries type of guy. So the bar isn't really set that high.
