A question on my mind virtually every day [Would BB draft Maye]

Bill would have absolutely taken Drake. He was the consensus best pick on the board at 3. To say otherwise is just hating.

Not to mention the scouts and personnel Bill left behind are the ones who took Drake while still using Bill's grading system.

Lastly the reason it's working so well right now is because of Bill's best disciple Josh McDaniels and Bill's preferred offense the Erhardt-Perkins system.

That's why I asked and wonder because I was thinking,,not sure why you think 100% he would have picked Drake if he was offered like 3 First Rounders or a package that maybe he would trade down like he normally does. But thanks for your opinion and the others who replied. But Drake's numbers so far are beyond anything we expected and the media are going crazy over it.

He would have taken Drake Maye or traded back a few spots to take McCarthy. He said on McAffee’s draft show that QB was the Patriots #1 position of need while Mac was still on the roster.

These two ^ were the system fits, they were unquestionably the only picks that high in the draft.

No offers like that were reported to have been made. I guess teams may have changed their thinking and offered something just because it was Bill and they know he likes to trade but that seems unlikely.

One thing to remember is that Maye was the third QB taken, so he wasn't universally regarded as the best QB of that draft. It's easy to look back now and think he was probably the best choice for long term, but I think it's impossible to tell what Bill would have done. And that's not even taking into account the likelihood that he would have lost some of his control over personnel by that point if Kraft retained him. I will say, I'm glad we took him, and I'm glad McDaniels is back as his OC.

Firstly a Big hello from the Kingdom of Bahrain and some may remember me, and although I have not posted for a while I always keep up reading the latest news and enjoy doing the NFL Picks contest.
As much as I am happy with our great start and always wanted Drake in last year's Draft ,,due to my son also watching him in College and convinced me that he Was The One to pick as our future QB.
My mind can't help thinking " what if " ,,,BB was still our HC ,,would he have picked him last year ??
In my opinion and my son also agrees that it was a Blessing that BB was not at the Draft last year ,,,that may sound bad for our greatest Coach ,,but I can't stop thinking about it. We certainly have our QB for the future and we should be Blessed that it took us only 4 years,,,when many are still trying after decades.
8-2 so far after going with 4 wins two seasons in a row is just a fantastic start.
Good luck Pats fans for the remaining games,,,and let's just win the Division first and maybe,,,just maybe do the unthinkable for many and get the No1 Seed.
Greetings and Blessings from Bahrain.
GO PATS
Stop agonizing over what Bill might have done and enjoy the ride. Yegads.

In talking about Maye during the McAfee draft show, Belichick called him the worst pocket passer of all the quarterbacks in the draft. While he said some complimentary things about him, he made more negative comments about Maye than any other player he commented on, by far. There is no reasonable argument that he would have selected him when he could have traded down and selected one of the quarterbacks he clearly preferred. It has been widely reported that the Giants offered the 6th pick and their first pick in 2025 and the Vikings offered their two firsts in 2024 and their first in 2025.

Fake news.

Fake news.
Which part is "fake news"? The offers from the Vikings and Giants are well-attested (yes, the Vikings wanted some day 3 pick swaps, but they did offer three firsts). And Belichick did say "He was the lowest-rated in-the-pocket thrower" (around 5:55).

Why would you waste your time thinking about something that is impossible to answer?

Try this one. Do colors look the same to everyone?
How do you know that what you see as red is what I see as blue?
How would we know?

100% he would've taken him.

Bill never traded down when he had top picks in the draft (it only happened 2 or 3 times).

People think he didn't like Maye because of his TV scouting report, but everything he said was 100% accurate. He was really complimentary, he said Maye was everything you'd want in a QB, big, strong, fast, athletic, with a very strong arm, and he's really accurate. He actually said that Maye makes "some amazing throws." "He's a kid who can make all the throws." He just needs experience. Then he said Maye doesn't set his feet, gets jittery in the pocket and comes off his reads way too quickly, and that he's young. He qualified the criticism by saying that Maye is young and that he could develop these things with experience.

That was it. That's all he said. People thought this was criticism, rather than it being a coach's take. Others think he was knocking Maye for saying he was Josh Allen. To the contrary, Belichick literally said something to the effect of "Hold Your Horses" with the Josh Allen comparison, but then quickly offered that "there are actually similarities with Allen" and that "Maye may eventually get there." He didn't dismiss the idea as improbable.

Yes, "in-the-pocket."

But at the same time he said makes amazing throws, has all the tools, can make any throw on the football field. Drake even now bails really fast from the pocket and gives up on routes. How is this not a valid critique? He still doesn't have the best pocket presence.

And that's OK because he's developing it, and Belichick said he has all the tools, and the things he doesn't have CAN BE developed.

This is 100% on the money. The people pretending he would have picked him are 100% full of ****.

It's not impossible to say because Belichick was the person who made it clear that he didn't like Maye as a prospect.

I think Bill would have traded down and signed a stopgap veteran quarterback. He didn't seem enamored of Drake Maye in 2024. And we all know Bill had success with and loved trading down to pick up extra draft picks.
