Here’s an interesting thought…if modus operendi from this regime is to dump contracts that don’t look great based on today’s on-field productivity, the question HAS to at least be asked:

What to do with Onwenu?

On one hand, he’s starting on an O-line that’s young and still shaky. May not want to mess with chemistry in-season.

On the other hand, he’s playing NOWHERE near the level of his contract.

He may also be worth a 4th to someone.

He’s really the remaining guy with a cap number you immediately question as Stevenson doesn’t save you any $ if you dump him.

That’s exactly what I THINK will happen. But thought it worth mentioning given he’s the clear “next bad contract”.

If his cap number was $9M probably not having this conversation. But he’s paid as the 8th best guard in the NFL. One would expect dominance at that $ # .

You don't weaken the OL when you have no way to fix it. Wait until the offseason then deal with it.

I get the feeling the Pats are not interesting in trading any big assets pick wise. They are bargain hunting, just my assumption. Yes they are making calls and putting in the due diligence, but I don't think they are interested in trading a first or a second. If a 4th for Moss situation falls in their laps, absolutely (they don't even need something that good obviously). But i think we have seen time and again trading first for star players rarely ends well, and often end horribly, particularly multiple first. It really makes me wonder why teams still do it when it so rarely has worked out in their favor.

Right now i look at this team. And i ask myself, what is needed to make this a championship caliber team?

The answer is pretty straight forward. Defensive improvement somewhere. While we could stand to improve S, DE or LB... We don't need to improve all 3 with huge upgrades. Nor do we need to add an All Pro. If you were to put another 'Spillane' level player on this defense in one of those spots that is probably enough top line talent added. Then you need a little depth on defense. We have 5 competent DBs. (And yes I am putting Hawkins as competent for now). Though he is usually the weak link, but he is NFL caliber... We need 1 more DB body in case someone goes down. And we need 1 solid DE depth piece Get those things ans your ready to go on D. It's not perfect but it is good enough. LB2 be worked around if you get the other two. Or you can get an LB2 high tier player who can fill in at DE at times and work around it the other way. In any case the result is more or less the same.

Add 1 really solid player and just a little depth to the other spots somehow.

On offense it is about fixing the OL once and for all. It has been okay this year... but it is still young and improving. Or has stop gaps. You want to move forward next year with less question marks. You also need to address WR likely in some way. Diggs/Hollins aren't improving and getting old, it will happen fast and suddenly. Boutte/Douglas contracts are coming up. Chism/Williams haven't shown much of anything yet. We need clarity at this spot. Locking up Boutte if possible is a good first step. But they need to know they have something up in the pipe line to look forward to to offset the decline incoming in 2 of those spots. An influx of talent be nice too. Henry/Hooper enter this convo, and also are on the wrong side of 30. Hopefully Williams and/or Chism come on strong over the rest of the year and put these concerns to rest a little.

I want them to stick to the plan. Have plenty to spend on filling holes in free agency, then go BPA and have another draft like the last one. Then put all of their focus on developing their young players. If they can repeat the 25' offseason they can be contending for titles for years to come, and that's how you put multiple Lombardi trophies in the cabinet, and Championship banners in the stadium. I would like nothing more than to see them win another 3,4,5 Lombardi's, and leave the rest of the league with no doubt as to who the greatest franchise in NFL history is.

Yes, I think most of the moves right now will be to boost depth. That doesn't preclude getting someone who pushes others down the depth chart, but I think they're mindful of chemistry.

Dugger and White didn't fit in from a football or chemistry standpoint

WR is often mentioned as an ongoing need. Frankly I don't see it - and in fact I'd worry about trading for a Jakobi Meyers or someone who is in a contract year who isn't going to be all that enthused about being one of 7 or 8 receivers the ball gets spread around to in a given game.

I love Meyers but he's looking for a big payday.

Would he rather have 100 catches, miss the playoffs and get a and big new contract? Or 50 catches that make a bigger difference on a playoff or super bowl team? Sometimes guys playing for their next/final contract are more interested in their own stats and less about winning.

Zero chance they move Ownenu midseason. In the offseason, his nonguaranteed salary and cap number are kind of egregious so they might consider opening up the hole, but no way you do it midseason. If you trade him now as opposed to waiting until the offseason to cut him, if they don't want him, the only benefit would be saving the rest of his salary this year (about $6M using halfway point). And then you have to replace him on the roster with a player, so it's more like $5.5M. It just doesn't make sense. This isn't a Dugger or White situation where they weren't playing. Onwenu is an every down starter. Sure, he's overpaid but the comparisons end there. It's apples to oranges.

Chubba Hubbard has a $5.6M salary guaranteed for injury next year (but not fully guaranteed). He's been bad while Dowdle has been very good. I could see CAR wanting to clear that salary risk if they expect to cut Hubbard, but they do keep starting him over Dowdle and seems like he's a culture guy. Not sure they're inclined to jump ship so quickly, but worth a call.

Alex Wright seems like a super solid pickup. Seems to be a good edge run defender that can also rush well enough. Would be a good "platoon" partner with Chaisson to steal a baseball term, if you will. He's a FA after the year, but young so maybe if both sides enjoyed the experience together if we traded for him then he'd extend in the offseason.

If the Eagles traded Brown it's worth exploring, but feels like it could be disruptive midyear. I'll never complain about adding a great player, but I'd almost prefer to aim lower at WR if they add one. Just get a good, solid #3 in here.

He could be, that just seems unlikely IMO. Extending a depth/rotation kind of guy like that before even spending a day with him seems unusual. I know that's exactly what FA is, but a little different there because that's just the timing of it. Feel like both sides, so close to FA, would want a trial period first.
