NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

He was going into the second year of a $58 million contract with nearly $30 million guaranteed. Of course, they had a financial reason to keep him on the roster. It is silly to suggest otherwise.
They just traded him
He had a cap savings if he was cut.
They weren’t forced to keep him

Now the Pats ****ing better do something with all that cap space - something big. Selling with a 6-2 team is disgusting unless it's the first in a series of moves. I want a Hendrickson level acquisition after giving White/Dugger away for nothing.
White was still on his rookie deal. He wasn't making that much money and he wasn't doing anything on the field.

Dugger was a clear liability in pass coverage. He was not worth his 14.5m average salary. He was an ill-advised contract extension under the Mayo regime.

I call this addition by subtraction. Hopefully we do get a coverage safety for cheap from somewhere else though.

Yes, that shows how completely useless he truly is. They had a financial reason at the start of the season that they to try to make him fit. He was a disaster and had no choice but to cut bait and try to get anything for him.

Again, there was no way they were going to cut him before the season started because he would have made $30 million for one mediocre year. Financially, they had to try to make it work. But now he continues to be a failure, they can cut bait.

Did he? Or did his contract make it so they had to keep him on the roster and try to make it work with him?
Vrabel wasn't forced to play Dugger. He could have been a healthy scratch all year. We could have played Pettus or someone elevated or claimed as we will do next week.

I posted this awhile back.
Thoughts on Gilmore signing and playing some FS.
Might be worth a shot.

Can we go easier on Dugger?
He played through his ankle injury last year (when he really shouldn't have, business-wise), and surgery couldn't fix it.
His career's essentially over. He was a good player prior to 2024.

When Hawkins went down, he was forced to play Dugger. Maybe Pettus or anyone else didn’t earn the right to play either.

Obviously, Dugger didn’t earn to be the #3 safety on this team or he would still be with the team. They traded him for next to nothing and they are eating part of his remaining salary. That is earning your way off the team not to the primary back up position.

As of today, we don't have a #3 S or a #3 RB. I suspect that the pickup from MIA is a player to check out for the future. I doubt that he is better than Pettus at this point.

Vrabel did well. We gained cap space. We moved on from 2 players that have no future with the patriots. And we gained two roster spots.

THIS WEEK
I expect to add Jennings, solving the #3 RB issue, although theoretically he could be upgraded next week.
I expect to elevate Grant who with Pettus would be our emergency #3 safeties. Hopefully, someone will be traded for next week.

I didn’t mean to be harsh. I was just trying to make a point and used strong language. Probably should have been more judicious in my word choice.

They are eating most of his salary to get him off the roster. That is how much they want him gone.

But again, they would have had to pay him $30 million for one year where he was injured for a large portion of it. No team cuts bait like that. And there wasn’t much in cap saving.

I guess we'll see more transactions in the next week or so. I have only one request. SIGN A SAFETY!

And yes, this can be a #3 safety if we can't get a #1. And yes, I know that Hawkins has played very well and should be extended.

None of that supports your argument that they were forced to keep him.

THATS the plan? We weakened our S position so we could add a rookie os player from a team that stinks?
Love me some Vrabel but I think he Fed up here.

Yes a UDFA rookie practice squad guy from a crappy team.

I guess he wanted a younger player (no Budda Baker).

Once again you've proven you can't be talked to more than 2 posts deep.
I know what defer means, and you damn well know I meant I will defer my opinion on the trades until I see what our subsequent moves are. I am not deferring to his judgment, I am deferring my judgment until I see what else happens.
"Defer put off (an action or event) to a later time; postpone."

Still deferring?

Sound like you agree it was a mistake to trade your #3 safety for basically nothing.
