Unused cap space rolls over though so whatever the hit is this year directly reduces their cap space next year since they'll roll over less. I'd be surprised if that was much of a consideration on a deal this size - when you factor in the rollover impact and relative small dollars of the total deal it won't make much of a difference in cap management.
I agree it doesn’t make a difference from cap space perspective, but it does from an APY perspective. Some people thought the $12m APY sounded a little high, and what I’m saying is that through signing bonus coming through this year, management might be looking at it as if it’s a 4 year deal. He already had a $1.65m cap charge this year (base plus prior signing bonus). Pats management might view this as his being paid $9.4m per for 4 years.

$12M a year is lower than I expected. He's a "slot corner", sure, but he has inside/outside versatility and is additionally one of the best, if not THE best, punt returners in the NFL. I expected $15M. So I am pretty happy with $12M.

Let's see Boutte with an extension next. C'mon Kayshon, take $12M a year for 3 years too.

Boutte and Gonzalez can’t sign extensions until after the last regular season game has been played this season, per the CBA, since they’re 3rd year drafted players.

It's still 12M APY no matter how they decide to move it around. If they gave him a big signing bonus itll be because thats what Marcus and his agent negotiated. I know some others disagree but 12M APY is lower than I expected, I think thats a great deal for us. Top slots are making ~13M APY right now and Marcus is also the best punt returner in the league and can contribute on offense if asked.

Edit: What hes already making this year is irrelevant, theyre extending him to add 3 new years onto his contract. Management isnt looking at it as a 4 year deal. The signing bonus amount will be based only on how much they want to guarantee to him/pay him up front, more guarantee's/money up front is more appealing to players. The reason we sign him now is to lock him in at a lower APY. If he made it to free agency he'd likely get a higher APY. The reason he signs now is to lock in his money and eliminate the risk of a bad injury ruining his contract.

Ahh yeah right. I always think Boutte is one year longer on the team than he is for some reason.

In the grand scheme it doesn't make a difference but from an accounting perspective, maybe there's some advantage to squeezing in spending that money right now vs. next year, etc.

Two things to point out:

1. Douglas has earned, and Boutte is on track to earn, the lowest level escalator, which will bump their salaries next year up to around $3.5M (that salary is not guaranteed, though).

2. Gonzalez can be given the fifth-year option at any point from after Week 18 through May 3 of next year. Doing so does not prevent them from signing him to an extension.

FWIW I can't think of any significant benefit.

Provided he stays healthy one would expect them to exercise the option and immediately get to work on an extension

Little heftier than I expected tbh, I see why he chose to extend now. He gets hurt and lands on IR i’m not so sure a deal like that is offered.

Not complaining about the price, I think it sets a good tone to reward hard working players. Worked his way up to team captain. Big role in ST and defense
That's less than what Jonathan Jones got to hobble around his last year here.

It's an absolute bargain.

Dude wins games. That's it.

I was hoping this would end the Continuous Libel and Slander Campaign Against Marcus Jones - but I see it hasn't.

Can you imagine?

Great news key Player in the cog: real exciting game changing player...Marcus that is.

12Mill for Boutte heck no try 18Mill and up. Young up and coming Receiver ain't taking peanuts in this day and age: he has plenty of upside.

Out of all the Jones we had in 2022, he's the surviving Jones.
Exactly that Jones class and Jack Knuckle head Jones was really good too. *Sings* Me and Misses Jones - Bill Clinton and Paula Jones - The Patriots and all those Jones.

I don't think so
