Happy he's back. I do chuckle a bit at everyone applauding the move before the numbers are even posted though haha

My guess is that it's a reasonable number though, otherwise they wouldn't have done it

All of us waiting on the numbers...

Yes I like Davis. I really had high hopes for Austin had a fantastic camp and had pretty much been relegated to back up garbage time duty.. he would have been the perfect guy to make it easier to move on from Davis next season.. still believe we should draft A CB. Davis is 28 on a 2 year deal..
Don't be stunned if we take one the first couple of days of the draft.

Much to the consternation of the Cult of Verticality, of course.

Great move by the Pats for a great team guy who plays the slot well and is invaluable on ST's...
Well deserved..

They definitely should be open to drafting a CB. I say "open to" because you only have so many picks. But with the approach we took of signing a bunch of free agents, you have to recognize that they aren't all long term answers. Guys like Davis, Moses, Landry, Spillane, Bradbury, Diggs are all performing now, but it shouldn't surprise anyone if they all decline a fair amount over the next years. That's just how it goes with FAs.

The key though is that you fill all the holes adequately enough that you don't need to reach for one particular need. You can actually play the draft board and just take guys you like and hopefully in natural course of that you find replacements for those guys before the bottom falls out on them.

Yea, Austin showed a few flashes in 23 and 24 but doesn’t look like the answer long term. We should draft one soon. I thought davis’s deal was 3 years 60 mill, though it may have an ‘out’ for year 3 im guessing at his age

I know people want to extent Chaisson, but i don't see it happening till after the trade deadline. They probably don't expect to land an elite DE... but they don't want to rule out the option.

I'd love a world where Marcus Jones is a Patriots for life. You got to love those home ground full career stories. I hope it works out that way. This is a big step in doing that.

I could see him being like Andre Carter and Mark Anderson leaving after a solid year with the Pats. Both players had 10 sacks in 2011 scoring contracts elsewhere.

Interestingly the guy I’m a bit disappointed in is Landry. Just doesn’t seem to scare anyone off the edge and at his cap number you really need more.

Why don't they ever just release the numbers when the news breaks? They are going to get released anyway.

Vertical Routness, but yours has a nice ring to it.

So seems he got just a shade under one of the other top slot guys. Seems like he's been good enough to get more, but that means he takes on injury risk for the rest of the season, and for him that's an exaggerated risk because of the return duties as well. He's also kind of old for a 2nd contract guy since he played his rookie year at 24 but that's probably more a factor for the kind of 3rd contract he can or can't get since this one should all still be "prime" type years physically unless there's an injury.

I think it just came down to it not being worth it for Jones to play out the year and push for $14-$16M a year maybe at most and run the risk of a serious injury that costs him everything. As a somewhat older player if he tore an achilles or ACL or something he might never get this kind of money so risk outweighed the reward of holding out for more.

Little heftier than I expected tbh, I see why he chose to extend now. He gets hurt and lands on IR i’m not so sure a deal like that is offered.

Not complaining about the price, I think it sets a good tone to reward hard working players. Worked his way up to team captain. Big role in ST and defense

It’s a 3 year extension at $12m per season, but from the Patriots perspective they get to spread out the signing bonus over 4 seasons not 3 (i.e. including this one). For that reason, I’m curious to see if this contract has a heavy signing bonus.

Unused cap space rolls over though so whatever the hit is this year directly reduces their cap space next year since they'll roll over less. I'd be surprised if that was much of a consideration on a deal this size - when you factor in the rollover impact and relative small dollars of the total deal it won't make much of a difference in cap management.
