NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

He seems like he is not fitting in well in the new Jags offense. He also seems unhappy. I think they want to make Hunter their #1 WR.

He would be perfect for Maye's deep threat abilities. Although he isn't known for strong route running. So I am not sure how he would fit into McDaniels' system.

He is only in year two of his career and could be paired with Maye for the next ten years if traded though. He was a first round pick. So they would have him under contract for two more years with a fifth year option. If the Jags are truly looking to trade him, I would do it.
Not to beat on the wide receiver drum.. but for a piece for the present and future it makes absoulte sense should it happen for so many reasons. Diggs & Tarzan are 30 plus.. Boutte is your young star in the making.. you trade for a proven young player on his rookie deal to grow with an elite QB.

That makes no sense, unless Thomas has really fallen out of favor with Liam Coen. But the chance to add an alpha X WR on his rookie deal would make much more sense to me than Chris Olave or AJ Brown.

He has had a bad case of the dropsies this year. He has been getting it from the media and fans down in Jacksonville. He has fallen out of favor. He has had games this year where he only caught 1/4 or 1/3 of the balls thrown to him. The first three games of the season, he caught 7 of the 25 passes thrown to him. He also seems unhappy down there too.

He was amazing last year. He is not very good this year. He has been unreliable.

Thomas: 27 receptions on 55 targets (less than 50%) for 365 yards and 1 TD. We can't offer too much for that production.

Boutte: 20 receptions on 25 targets (80% efficiency) for 356 yards and 4 TDs.

In 2025 Thomas would be a downgrade to Boutte.

Yup, just don't believe it. Things that sound too good to be true usually are.

It depends on which Brian Thomas Jr. the Pats get if they trade for him. Last year's version would be an elite WR. This year's version would not be a great addition. Last year, Thomas was one of the best WRs in the league with 1,282 yards (3rd) and 10 TDs (6th).

I agree but if I remember correctly the concern with Thomas in the draft was his hands and routes especially in a zone. Does not seem like a fit to me for a timing offense like McDaniels. We are already trying to work in Williams.

To be perfectly honest, I don't know enough about Thomas to know if he is a good scheme fit or not. He has the ability to be elite though. So on its face, he would be worth the trade depending on what it would take. But of course, the Pats would have to evaluate him to determine if he could be elite in the Patriots' offense.

I'm of the mind if a WR can come in as rookie and have the type of elite production that he did then the talent is undeniably prevalent. Don't know much about Liam Cohen and his offense but clearly isn't conducive to Thomas Jr. It's still worth a shot at exploring.. just my opinion..

After a year the league has film on everyone. If the player dips late in Y1 or in Y2 as the league adjusts, it is not a good thing.

You have to look into the reasons why their production dropped. Production dropping doesn't mean that opposing defenses have figured him out. In fact, from what I can tell, he is still getting open. His problem is he isn't connecting with Lawrence. Now what is the reason for that? You gotta figure that out.

He has had the dropsies. You need to determine what is causing this issue. Is Lawrence throwing a badly thrown ball? Possibly, because Hunter dropped several passes in London last week. Is he thinking too much? Possibly. Is correctable or is this what he is?

Thomas was on fire at the end of last year. He was far better in December last year than he was earlier in the year. I don't think it has to do with defenses figuring him out. I think it may be him struggling with Coen's system and probably overthinking.

Not likely, but fun to speculate.

True. I haven't paid much attention to Jax or how teams are covering him I do know on NFL network was talk about Jax trying to incorporate Hunter as the #1..

Even last year I noticed him double catching A LOT of the completions. Usually, DBs are close enough to knock it away, but he got away with it. Did his scouting reports say anything about questionable hands? There is so much to love about this guy, but that certainly worries me.

I remember Sims and Florio interviewing Bo Nix. I was quite impressed with him, even if I still wanted to draft Maye. Sims was all over Nix just loved him.
His QB rankings for the draft were
Williams
Daniels
Nix
Penix
McCarthy
Maye

Yes Maye at six. Just goes to show, we all can be wrong at times.
If Mayo were still the coach, Maye might very well have been closer to 6th than 1st.

I would think that Thomas would take at least a first.

He is a first rounder who has played well. He is signed through 2027, with an option year in 2028 available.
=====
I don't see why the jags would trade him for less than 2 firsts.

They will never get 2 firsts for a disgruntled receiver with decreased production and a lot of drops. Good luck with that.

The contrarian to me is why the bad second season? Could it be a more advanced offensive system if so would he struggle with McDaniels concepts?

I would need to do a through check before I was giving a second or greater.

There will always be risk involved. Otherwise BTJ wouldn't be available, and certainly not for less than what MgT suggests. His stock is down.

Do the Pats believe his problems are fixable with coaching, and that he can fit in?

Draft picks are gambles, too.

It's either a second round or third rounder.

No way are they getting a first. We could do a second for Brian Thomas and a 4th.
