OT: NBA coach Billups caught in Mafia and sports gambling sting (LINK)

This is relevant because you're going to hear so much about people suspecting payoffs when things look funky. Especially regarding refs.

If a player or coach making many millions is going to get knotted up with the mob, you're telling me it's not going to happen to referees?

Hard to believe they will be completely clean.

The idea that you can bet but not on your own sport? That's kind of laughable.

There is no protection for college players or refs either.

I'm not going to mention the ridiculous calls in the Patriots game 2 weeks ago, but I watched a Champions League soccer game this weekend and read social media on the ref's decisions (which were some of the most bizarre things you've ever seen, like a goal disallowed because the defending team committed a penalty a split second before the goal). A guy given a red card because his arm swung backward and grazed the defender who was tackling him (American football style) on a breakaway. The social media were all about rumors and payoffs and crooked refs. Why? Because this happens in international soccer. There are crooked refs in soccer and scandals are frequent enough.

The NBA already has a problem with former refs like Donaghy and now you have coaches and players involved.
I wouldn't be surprised to see if there are Refs among the poker players.

And while I or anyone might say - well they weren't betting on basketball or football - they ARE caught up with the Mafia for whatever they might owe.

Just the fact that they have such ties with the mafia could even be enough to co-opt them

Perhaps players/ex-players/coaches have more to lose - or can afford to lose big $ to the mafia - but when you've got the mob breathing down your neck, even if you don't owe them money, it can be tough to say "no"

Players always gave Belichick credit for not going along with Goodell/Gambling/Mafia's insistence that he tell everyone where their injuries were.

The injury report exists to assist legal and illegal gambling at the expense of the health of players.

Goodell has never made a secret of that.
i think the rationale behind it is it eliminates inside information regarding the health of a player / if they will play...

I don't have an issue with the league mandated Injury reporting...

Bill did what he did for 2 reasons - 1. generalized info so other players *cough* ala the saints *cough* couldn't target injuries in order to knock players out of the game & 2. to kinda be a **** about it... i appreciated that part of BB's personality

I have no problem with how BB handled injury reporting...

Let's head over to the FanDuel News Desk presented by ESPNBet for this breaking news update on illegal gambling in the NBA, but first we have messages from BetMGM, DraftKings, and Hard Rock Casino.

Then, can we place bets on who else gets busted for betting?

The FBI is holding a press conference right now on the details around this morning's sports gambling bust.
Here are some of the highlights:
1. Current and former NBA players and coaches Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, and Damon Jones have been arrested.
2. This was an illegal gambling and sports rigging operation that spanned years across 11 states. In total, 30 individuals have been arrested (13 mafia members).
3. The case involves La Cosa Nostra (the Italian mafia).
4. Charges include illegal gambling, wire fraud, and extortion.
5. There are two separate indictments. The first involves six defendants accused of participating in a sports corruption scheme that exploited insider information involving NBA players and teams. The defendants leveraged their connections to place prop bets based on confidential insider information, winning tens of thousands of dollars per bet.
The second indictment involves 31 defendants charged with participating in a nationwide scheme to rig illegal poker games. The FBI says they used high-tech cheating technology to steal millions of dollars from victims in underground poker games that were secretly fixed.
6. The two cases are separate, but there are three overlapping defendants, including former NBA player and coach Damon Jones.
7. The FBI says that NBA player Terry Rozier told the defendants that he was going to leave a game early on March 23, 2023, with an injury. The defendants then placed more than $200,000 of wagers on the unders for his prop bets, with Rozier leaving the game after nine minutes. Those bets paid out tens of thousands of dollars in profits, and the defendants and Rozier counted the money at his house.
8 The FBI says that former Raptors player Jontay Porter was threatened to participate in the sports gambling scheme because of his gambling debts.
9. Teams that were bet on during the sports gambling scheme include the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Toronto Raptors.
10. The rigged poker games occurred in the Hamptons, Miami, Las Vegas, and Manhattan.
11. The poker scheme targeted victims who were lured to participate in rigged poker games by the chance to play alongside former professional athletes. These athletes included Chauncey Billups and Damon Jones.
12. The FBI says that the defendants utilized altered shuffling machines to read the cards in the deck and then relayed that information to an off-site operator. The offsite operator — known as the "quarterback" — then sent that information to someone at the table.
13. The FBI also says that the defendants utilized other cheating technologies, including poker chip trays that read cards through hidden cameras, special contact lenses and glasses that could read marked cards, and x-ray poker tables that could read cards face down.
14. The FBI says that the defendants robbed a victim at gunpoint to acquire a rigged shuffling machine.
15. The sports gambling investigation is called "Operation Nothing But Net," while the poker investigation is called "Operation Royal Flush."
16. The FBI has been working on this investigation for four years, with victims losing at least $7 million.
17. One specific victim lost at least $1.8 million.
18. The FBI reviewed thousands of hours of video evidence and executed more than two dozen search warrants.
These are just accusations at this point. I am just pointing out details from the FBI's investigation.

Rozier is alleged to have directly affected betting on NBA games, including faking an injury mid-game to take himself out.

Jones is accused of, along with other things, hanging out with Lakers pre-game, noticing that Lebron was favoring an ankle (though he wasn't on an injury report), then immediately placing bets by phone on the Bucks in a game vs. the Lakers right afterwards.

As an aside note on how things have changed:

I was writing fantasy football articles during the late 90's and the Patriots refused my press pass because of the association fantasy sports had with gambling.

All you need to do is watch the 4th quarter of game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals Lakers-Kings and tell me that something didn't smell right. In all my years of watching sports, I have never seen a game so totally off kilter that til my dying day I will believe that the fix was in.

The FBI loves naming their operations.

It should be noted that Billups' arrest has NOTHING to do with all the basketball **** you spewed like another angry degenerate gambler. If you took the time to listen and fully read the story there were 2 facets to this investigation. One was the gambling on prop bets and basketball (Rozier) and one was about illegal hi stakes poker and NOTHING to do with basketball. Billups was arrested for allegedly being involved with that.

Also it should be noted that SUPPOSEDLY in our country, being arrested does NOT equal being guilty of anything. It just means you are accused.

The NBA is in serious trouble, Steve A with his BS about "Trump is coming" when this investigation started years ago under the Biden Administration, also he said ICE will be at the Superbowl, ICE is at every Superbowl for security and also to help the NFL with counterfeit merchandise.

It's amazing how many people on TV (and government) spout out crap that is so untrue!

BTW, my cousin Vinny in Brooklyn says to bet the under on the Trailblazers tonight, because the coach is going to need some cash for a good lawyer!

Regulation is how we protect the vulnerable from the powerful. Participating in under ground poker is beyond dumb. But so is cryptocurrency.

He's not directly involved in point shaving, etc., but there's enough of a connection to unethical/illegal behavior to justify a suspension. And as the NFL has pointed out, coaches, executives, and owners should be held to a higher standard than players.

"Though Billups was not named in the sports betting indictment, the description of a co-conspirator who allegedly told a bettor that a number of Trail Blazers players would miss a March 2023 game had a playing and coaching career that matches Billups."

Some others charged with being tied to the rigged poker games for the mob were also involved in NBA betting.

Once the mob gets their mits on you, they taint everything you touch. If they had him with the poker games, they surely had him shaving points and/or giving out inside information.

The NBA needs Judge Landis at this point, these people need lifetime bans, permanent bars from attending or any participation in any way connected to the NBA.

I'm sorry are we just glossing over the fact there's still a Mafia? What is this the 80s?

It's always existed, it just has been devastated by RICO and isn't as meaningful as it used to be. Just some hoods running some rackets and a lot of what is left over has been shifted into legitimate business. The Genovese family is still powerful and has influence, because they keep a low profile and run a tight ship. But most of them are just drop outs who were too lazy to get real jobs and have a few side gigs like prostitutes or loan sharking.

The Nazi Basset-ball Ass-ociation has been sleazy since The Jordan Rules when certain violations especially on offense began to be more loosely interpreted, if not flat-out ignored because Nike money... Lebroni's current influence is so pernicious, all-encompassing & evil that if some of his teams had been just a wee bit better, the Ass would've ensured him even more championships than those already given him.
Look no further than The Shield for another example...

The Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors were all named in the indictment, Joseph Nocella Jr., the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, told reporters.

The multimillion-dollar scheme, which took place between January 2022 and March 2024, allegedly involved sharing non-public information with bettors, including when players would be sitting out games or would pull themselves early from games.

So, they were in bed with the mob, helping to fix poker games, and betting. At least 4 NBA teams involved.

Lebroni's team is also involved?
