Kayshon Boutte, how does he do it?

People will throw up at the name but I see 2014 LaFell in him. David Givens is a comp that will make people feel a little warmer and fizzier maybe. I don’t see a “breakout” waiting to happen with him, but I do see someone who could poised to just have a super solid 10 year career and I’ll take that all day.

The way he catches the football I can see it. He'll probably surpass last years numbers in our next two games...with good health of course.

Oh statistically? Yeah he’s breaking out in that sense for sure. But from what I’ve already seen I think he’s a good #3 WR type already. He was last year, just obviously held back by bad situation. You can see it on his tape.

I just don’t see the consistent separation or YAC ability to breakout. Obviously catching the football is insanely important for a wide receiver, but without one or both of those other things that lends itself to more of a good dependable receiver than it does breakout star.

He’s very fortunate we have Maye who is otherworldly with downfield ball placement. It enables Boutte’s skill set to produce explosive plays that aren’t typical for that kind of WR. Receivers based on strong hands and body placement usually thrive underneath but Maye’s alien-like downfield ball placement turns that into a downfield skill set too. It really works well with Boutte.

He was a stud at LSU before being hurt. I think I was one of only ones here that was telling people he wasn't going anywhere and outside of a breakdown in camp he was making the team. Everyone, from the Lazars, Perrys, Currans, etc were all saying he was going to get cut or at best traded.

It was pure comedic gold and it has borne out to be true. The dude is actually turning into a pretty special WR. He is playing himself out of being a poor mans Anquan Boldin as the weeks go on.
I had him as starting WR all along. Anyone doubting that either wasn’t paying attention or were trying to get attention

Boutte - primarily X, some Z
Diggs - primarily slot, some X and Z

If they can get a guy to really fill in that last slot, they may have a pretty solid WR room for the next few years. It could be Williams, eventually.

Last year after Maye took over he had 12 games 39 catches 542 yards.

That works out to 23 for 315 in 7 games.
This year in 7 games he has 20 for 356.

He hasn’t broken out, he’s been steady.
Our offense under McD has almost always had a WR in that role where he can have a big day if the defense plays a certain way but mostly is there to get a defense to play the way we want them to open up other things.

He's turned himself into a good football player. Really excels on contested and difficult catches. He plays tough as well.
At one time Boutte was a potential 1st round pick.

Then he was injured and off field trouble arose. Just another good LSU product.

Playing around with stats on nfl.com and saw that Boutte leads the league in 1st down % on his catches....

Hes at 90%....wow. 1st down king.
Maye had a 91% completion rate yesterday vs Tenn. Only 2 incompletions all day.

That is crazy.

I thought he was too soft and avoided contact. Even Boutte admitted it during the offseason.

But I was wrong.

He survived having Troy Brown as his WR coach, and now has dramatically improved his route-running, his understanding of the offense, and his hands. He always had good hands, but it's definitely improved.

Pop Douglas seems to be emerging from the shadow of Troy Brown as his WR coach now too, just gotta get him to run the routes he's supposed to, and not just flatten them out if he feels like it.

I NEVER understood this. The OG TB was such a long-term work in progress; but became Mr. Everything ... at least until the true Mr. Everything -Edeldude came along. He had to have learned all those WR skills to get as good as he was. IIRC He was a late round (?UDFA) pick and didnt make the field for his first 2 years. So HOW COME HE COULDNT PASS THAT ON?

Dont know if it was the stone he was given to sculpt with; but he just never seemed to produce great products as a WR coach. I always figured he would be a natural and for most of the time I thought it was his other guys on staff holding him back ... but proof is in the pudding and his was fluid.

I love a good redemption story. He clearly has his head on straight now and it shows on the field. Boutte went from not being able to keep his feet in bounds on routine plays to making contested sideline catches something Maye can count on when the game is on the line. I hope he stays with the team for a long time.

My comp: A slightly smaller Anquan Boldin. Strong hands, makes the tough catches.

In the NFL, knowledge and precision make you play faster, stronger, and better than your nominal physical attributes would indicate.

At this level, even the practice squad guys were once all-stars, state Hall of Famers.

That's what ends the careers of a lot of young players. It's just how close the physical talent level is between the starters and the guys on the outside looking in.

The extra 'gear' that separates the college athlete into the NFL pro comes down to being able to recognize and do the little things your position requires.

As I have continually preached about WRs.... give me those guys that the scouts ask the same question OP did. "How does he do it?" Those are the guys who ALREADY have learned to throw defenders off with anticipation and precision in their routes.

Easily the most famous example is Jerry Rice. A lot of scouts had him down as 'slow'. We all know how that ended up!

Troy Brown has the distinction of being the last 8th round draft pick in Patriots history. After 1993 (he got drafted with Drew), it got cut down to the 7 rounds we still have today.

Dude that's it I remember A Boldin ran a pedestrian 40: got in the League and figured out how to get by people. His career turned into one of those how moments.

I don't know if people remember, but Boldin was a much smaller guy when he first entered the league.

I recall it was either his second or third year Boldin showed up to camp as a beast and it was WTF.

Don't know if that muscle would help Boutte or slow him down.
