NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

Monster contract? His salary is $16M and you only the prorated portion so about half of that. 1 year $8M is hardly a monster contract to rent one of the leagues best pass rushers for a playoff run on a team that looks poised to make it.
You're also taking the dead cap for next year, 6.5 million. For someone who won't be here, who played 10, 12 games for you the year before.

Watching Gainwell for PIT tonight and I feel a certain level of frustration that they’re in the RB situation they’re in. I understand that they started the year with Stevenson/Henderson/Gibson, but remember that the draft happens well after free agency. There are a million running backs who sign for modest amounts each year and they sat on $50M of cap space with only Stevenson/Gibson under contract. It worked out drafting a guy, but they probably should have signed someone in free agency if we’re being honest since you can’t count on the draft board falling how you want,

Minor criticism for an overall great offseason, but I do think they dropped the ball on that one.

5 concussions in his career. That's more than Tua. He's due here in a couple of weeks for his yearly.
Yep. Olave would be a hard NO for me (he's had too many head injuries). A.J. Brown for a couple of 2nd Rd Picks? Sure. Breece Hall (although the Jets are too chiken-poop to do it)? Yes. Kayvon Thibodeaux? Yes. Brown still can have 5 or more years of #1 WR production and Hall and Thibdeaux are still young. All 3 would be longer term players to help build our next SB Contender/Championship Team.

I LOVE Skatteboo’s style. Henderson seems to be just a speed guy, which will hopefully pay dividends eventually, but vision seems to be an issue. He misses lanes, and runs straight into defenders/piles.

Could be the “rookie” thing you mentioned.

Skatteboo was a binky.

Dudes just a savage.
Barring injury, Henderson had Stud potential. After this rookie season under his belt (although I think he'll make some plays this season at some point), and adjustment to the pro-game, he'll be something special.

In return, you're getting a 2nd-tier pass rusher for a little more than half a season, and hamstringing your cap this year and next year, since his contract involves a void year for 2026, a 6.5 million dead cap hit. And you're losing Keion White. Who comes in if/when Hendrickson has to miss a couple of games?
I agree with your analysis for the most part, but this is wrong: any money already paid out stays on the salary cap of the team that paid it. That $6.5M is prorated signing bonus, and therefore must stay on the Bengals' cap.

This one's been smoldering since Vrabel got hired. I actually thought it was going to get done in training camp.
It'd be about $9M for the remainder of this season, and another ~$45M for the next two years.

This, if you're trading for a 20-something with some years left on their contract, then you consider it.
If it's a 30-something who's a free agent at the end of the year, you don't.
Exactly correct! Hendrickson is on a one year deal and I haven't followed his production this season. As impressive as it's been to watch the teams growth, and our young QB grow we are still a evolving team. Simmons, AJ or another 20 something player of impact that's going to be here is the only sensible way .

The latter is what teams one piece away from being a legitimate contender do. I am not sure the Pats are there. I wouldn't be upset if the Pats traded for Hendrickson assuming what they send back in return isn't too pricey and they intend to sign him to a deal. But if they are just getting him for this year, it seems to be a waste of draft capital.

We know it won't be for a First Rounder this time around: and we have the cap so space. I would throw in either Pop or Kyle Williams.

That Ricky account that went bye bye he apparently nailed the Parsons to GB deal before it happened.

I don’t want to trade Boutte, but he is a free agent next season right?
So I would trade Kyle Williams and a third for AJ Brown.

K Boutte is not going anywhere he hasn't reached his ceiling. KW and a Third or Pop and a Third should do it.

FTR: WR looks Very Deep next year some really fine prospects coming out.

I don’t think Williams does much for them though. You’d think for a veteran team like Philly they’d ask for Pop Duggar and a 2nd or something like that. Williams won’t help this year.

As for WR being deep in the draft this year. Please let’s not do this exercise again. This team has a horrid track record drafting impact WRs.

At least we know it's not the same guys shopping for the groceries BB and Wolf.

I wouldn’t think anything of that.
I still think Williams can be a good player it’s just that he’s learning a tough offense for a Rook.

IIRC, there was a stat in this thread that show that most of the guys who get traded for end up being rentals, so I think Hendrix would be of value since it looks like we are going to be a 10-12 win team and serious contender much earlier than expected.

If they would take Young and 4th having Hendrixson would mean a dramatic improvement to our pass rush, giving us Landry, Chaisson, and Hendrixson off the edge to go along with the DT rotation, it would give us a pass rush that would be among the most feared in the league for this season. That even if he takes a small step back from his last 2 seasons he is a big improvement

4th round picks are far from sure things. I don't know what the percentages are of 4th rounders who end up being long term starters but it's not high (even though we seem to have gotten a good one this year) I warming up to this idea, though it's still a long shot imho
