Before clicking the arricle, I said in my head “I bet this is a result of a league getting scared about falling future revenue and failing to recognize that protecting an investment in the face of that often becomes abundantly apparent over the macro and, in an odds-based, competition industry, results in tipping the scales.”

It explains why it didn’t happen with Brady (the league was probably more flush with cash and future promise).

Au contraire, mon ami.

It DID happen with Brady; … just in the INVERSE.

I doubt the league will do anything about it, although I saw someone said they fired some referees in the offseason.
Yes, its in the Belichick thread IIRC.

SB1 posted the link.
I agree with those who say it taints the Chiefs but if no one sees it, what good will it do?
Nothing will change.

Taylor Swift is too much of a new NFL fan magnet to not keep happy. Women are glued to the TV awaiting the Kelce - Swift wedding. Its their Super Bowl.

345 Park Avenue telling the refs to break the rules and overturn a non reviewable play? This should be a major scandal. Surprised we haven’t heard of a class action lawsuit from bettors who had Goff first TD. Of course the refs protect the shield, no surprise there.

It's also not a penalty. He doesn't have to set if he's in motion, he just can't run forward before the snap, and he didn't.

Technically was Goff even the QB on that play? Montgomery threw it and he was set behind center as the "QB"...

BTW, the paper suggests that the reason for the ref's bias comes entirely from refs that previously refereed KC games during the regular season. And of course doing what 345 Park wants during the regular season also makes it more likely you get to referee in the post-season.

Gotta love the narrative now. "The Chiefs were better and would have easily won that game anyway if that play counted" like it's a proveable fact.

Funny how we didn't hear many people buy into "The Patriots were better and they would have blown the doors off the Colts in that AFC Championship game no matter how the footballs were or weren't inflated".

The relevant provision (as confirmed by the NFL) appears at Rule 7, Section 4, Article 2, Item 3: “It is legal for a T-Formation Quarterback to go in motion, whether he has placed his hands under center, on his knees, or on the body of the center. However, it is a false start if the action is quick and abrupt. If the player fails to come to a complete stop for at least one full second prior to the ball being snapped, it is illegal motion.”

The NFL allowing the Chiefs field crew to work the 2022 Super Bowl was criminal.

Somehow in the middle of the Arizona desert the field miraculously became wet and slippery and the Chiefs just happened to be wearing the correct cleats in the first half.

It’s not a conspiracy, the NFL saw Mahomes as biracial PR gold with the Patriots dynasty winding down… it was good business.

He wasn't lined up as the QB however, that's the issue, and he had an eligible number for a receiver. Montgomery was lined up behind the center in the gun, and he wears a perfectly legal QB number.

Expecting an apology from the league.

Whoopsie it should have counted our bad sorry about that. After their Chrefs get the W in the books of course.

Puts their entire dynasty into question.
It’s kinda nice that it’s given the national fanbase a little more of a perspective on the Patriots dynasty.

More rational fans will come to realize we were not the true bad guys.

Old heads, help me out:

The article points out how it is times of declining viewership that the NFL is likely to do this, or points to that as a reason as to why it was happening.

That got me thinking: was there another time in football where viewership/profit was tanking, and if so, was there a team the league really latched onto? Do you remember if they seemed to get a level of favorable treatment?

Exactly. I'd argue that the league was financially interested in breaking up the Patriots dominance to invite new market loyalty in a time that was seeing surging viewership. Just a different time.

It is really glossed over how deleterious the effects of taking 1st round/high round picks away can be, how deleterious it is to suspend a QB for a quarter of the season for nothing, only for the organization to withstand it lmao. Truly insane ****. Tell me the last team that has their DC wearing a clown Goddell shirt/The North Remembers type ****. Wanna talk bad boys of a league? It was the Patriots lmao.
