The McDaniels Effect... Passing Numbers up across the board

Agreed, AVP wasn't the problem and he could be a decent OC if he gets another shot. But the coaching operation as a whole was a D at best, too many of them were rookies at it. Night and day to this year.

Yeah, amateur hour is over the pros are running the show now. This is an impressive staff and outside of an unknowable health situation speaks well to the due diligence involved in assembling it

There were some positives in his background. Cleveland rode Flacco to a bit of success while AVP was there. Drew Bledsoe also spoke very highly of AVP.

Outside of drafting Maye, we were just desperate to find anything good about any decisions made that offseason.
You can find a nugget of mediocrity in anyone’s back ground. Remember he was a fake OC on Cleveland too, stefanski ran the offense and called the plays.
You can literally find someone to speak highly of any coach, even the ones that suck.

Van Punt was as much of a problem as any other problem.
Other than being the guy standing next to Maye (and holding him back btw) exactly what did he do well?

Game plan? Play calling? Evaluating personal? Using personnel correctly? Knowing Marcus jones could play offense? Communicating?
All Fs.

Even without looking at the numbers, you can see the offense is executing at a high level and certainly playing way better than last year. Not just Maye, but everyone. I swear I don't think that poster watches games.
the drama is done... Lancer is a decent guy... chalk it up to "a bad day all round"...

Love you baby.

Corky Mac was more dink and dunk. Always taking check downs.
That's what I remember, too, but he basically had the same Yards per Attempt as TB12 and Patrick Mahomes.

Cork did not attempt many long passes because they wound up as INTs.

Stats can be very deceiving sometimes.

Mildly hot take. I don't think McDaniels is all that good an OC. Clearly he's decent if he managed to stay in the league for this long. But why does he get a pass and not BB on the Tom Brady effect?

Basically everywhere else he's been an OC or HC the offense has been pretty bad outside of 1 year in LVR where both DeVante Adams and Josh Jacobs absolutely went insane. Then it fell down the drain the next year when he couldn't handle the QB situation.

Look at the stuff Shanahan does with the 49ers, Reid of in KC or the way they open guys up with the Bucs. There are OCs and HCs you clearly feel put their thumb on the scale. McDaniels feels more like just another guy. He runs his system but it depends on having a talented QB. I don't see much creativity on the field to spring guys open or anything used to power the difficulty of execution while still getting solid results.
This seems like an irrational take to me because of the all the open window completions that Maye has, it feels like it is a McD scheming players open. Watching some of the all 22 from youtube videos shows the routes being run are able to put defenses in a compromising position and that is scheme.

You're dead on about McD being hot trash every where else but that does not mean he is not doing well here. When judging OCs it is crucial to look at play design and imo McD has been pretty stellar. I saw a stat on twitter that Maye is leading the league in open window completions and that is either our WRs are constantly getting open on their own or McD is calling up routes that assist WR getting open. I believe it is a bit of both.

I have a feeling that the offense is a 1/2 read offense based on pre snap/post snap looks rather than a pure progression read. I am curious on other peoples thoughts about this.

This discussion with Rodney and Coach Dungy has some good observations. Dungy clearly thinks highly of both Drake and Josh, and feels the two of them together is a really good combination.

So, against truly terrible teams, Maye and this year's WR's are about one TD a game better than Brissett and last year's WR's.

with 4TD's if the 5 TD's of improvement being in the rex zone.

News at 11.
======
We have been better, but it will take lots, lots more to be even an average quality Offense, although we could make it into the playoffs by just having good results against the very weak teams on our schedule.
Weird take. Looking at things more as a whole, last year we averaged 17ppg, 30th in the league. So far this year we're at 25.5 ppg, 10th in the league. If you think that's something to sneeze at..

We’re all looking for signs to know whether the ship is pointed in the right direction. I think it is. The ship just hasn’t gone that far yet. This forum is all high highs and low lows.
I agree.

The stats (and record) also show that we pointed in the right direction in 2021.

I swear to God, if you surveyed all 32 fan bases and asked them to rate their OCs, at least 75% of them would say "below average."

He also proved his bona fides turning Matt Cassel from arguably the greenest QB in NFL history into a guy who was playing like a top 5 QB.

With 2 of the best ever at WR.
WE can't forget about that

Some missed opportunities but with more experience, Drake is going to capitalize on them. McD and Maye are figuring each other out and it's going to look so good with some continuity.

We're seeing a young gunslinger operate with structure. It's like if Brett Favre was methodical like Joe Montana in a Bill Walsh west coast offense.

Better coaching, better personnel, better blocking, better scheme, better everything… hard to attribute it all to one person. Vrabel gets a big nod because he assembled the staff and personnel. It’s a team sport and McDaniels was a good safe hire.

Look how happy mcdaniels is here. Thinking hes loving getting to shape a qb like maye with a contemporary in vrabel that trusts him and isn't overbearing.

That face reflects way too much inner contentment, Vrabel is obviously being too soft on these guys.
