Sorry, I won’t be drawn into a useless debate other than to say the guy who accuses me of a strawman changed my words from „16 games“ ( obviously meaning THAT OBE SEASON) in to 16 SEASONS just so he could go on w a specious argument.
You said BB in his greatest D season had to be rescued by Tom. I’m saying the coach is the only one who could have pulled off the D they did have that game. As those O players playing D practiced back in week 4 at it. And you‘re then ignoring 18 3/4 games of work to make some silly point about 4Q of a SB.
That SB was rescued by BOTH Tom s heroics & BB foresight, planning, player selection and development. You can never split the atom. They are both GOATs even if he got old over 60 and maybe should have known when to quit. If TB had played one more year as a shell of himself, would that take him out of GOAT territory ?
Not really interested in this debate except if I’m misquoted or something is so outrageous it has to be challenged.
Peace - Out.
I’ll relook in a week.
1. You replied to a quote that was not the one I replied to you in.
2. I wasn't referencing you or your post at all in the post you are replying to.
3. The quote where I said "16 seasons" I just mistyped. I meant 16 games. The rest of my point was based off that 16 games remark, so while it may have confused you, my response was in regards to what you actually said.
4. I disagree with the rest of your assessment. As good as the 2003 Pats defense was, it was far from the best defense of that era in the totality of the NFL. Plenty of other coaches did and have made defenses superior to the 2003 Pats defense. The 2002 Bucs the year before was a much better defense. The 2000 Ravens a few years before that was a much better defense. Even non SB winning defenses
To compound this:
The 2003 Pats had 14.9 PPG. In just the 2000's alone:
-2000 Ravens: 10.3
-2000 Titans: 11.9
-2000 Dolphins: 14.1
-2001 Bears: 12.7
-2001 Eagles: 13.0
-2001 Steelers: 13.2
-2002 Buccaneers: 12.2
-2005 Bears: 12,6
-2006: Ravens: 12.6
-2006 Patriots: 14.8 (interesting factoid)
-2008 Steelers: 13.9
-2008 Titans: 14.6
-2009 Jets: 14.8
They weren't even one of the top 10 defenses that decade in terms of points. Hell, Ravens, Steelers, Bears and Titans both put up at least two defenses that decade that were superior.
On top of that, only 3 of the 13 I listed actually won the Super Bowl. The Titansx2, Dolphins, Bears x2, Steelers x1, Ravens x1 and Jets all didn't win a Super Bowl. They didn't have a QB providing a safety net. Once the Steelers got a QB they won, once the Ravens got Flacco they won, the Jets and Bears and Titans have been wanting for a QB forever.
So yeah, the Pats had some really great defenses in that era, but there's a reason they weren't regarded as all timers. They really weren't. Statistically they weren't, and in big moments they weren't either. The best Patriots defense was the 4th best defense to win a Super Bowl of that decade. So yes, Brady existing to cover flaws and mishaps was very neccessary.
