The game was frustrating, but many areas looked pretty good (especially Defense) as we begin this transition year. I checked the snap counts. Vrable has made his decisions. However, for me, we need two needed changes overall.

CHANGE ONE - THE RUNNING GAME
I'm OK with taking what they give us. Jeanty had 19 carries for 38 yards. Stevendon as 7 for 15. I see ZERO reason for us to have continued what wasn't working in the game or going forward. I'm OK with a game with lots of ruinning or a game with lots of passing. Much depends on the Defense of the opponents. If the Defense is clsoing down the rnning game, Drake should be letting the ball fly and punish the defense.

My CHANGE would be primarily in the running back depth chart. The snaps were 65%, 35%, 7% for Stevenson, Henderson and Gibson respectively. I don't know whether the best use of Henderson is being in there 65% of the time; more than 35% seems right. HOWEVER, it is clear that Stevenson should be in much less and Gibson much more.

CHANGE TWO - UNCHAIN DRAKE
The time has come. Allow Drake to make decisions on the field. Allow him to play much more out of the pocket and try to create plays. He will fail. He will learn. And he will eventually succeed, or not. What seems true is that he will NOT succeed unltess he is allowed and encouraged to try to be a top 10 QB.

and yes, trade for a veteran backup guard. It really can't be right for Brown to be our only gameday backup at OG.

Comedy gold. Thank you.

Stop the presses.

So many potential head coach/offensive coordinators/general managers on this forum. We are so fortunate.

1st down backs need help from the OL more so then guys like Henderson. Against the Raiders...pass blocking was ok...run blocking was bad. I don't think that will happen 2 games in a row. The Patriots will run the rock a lot against the Dolphins.

I agree that run-blocking will improve as the PL plays their second game as a unit.

That bing said, don't you think that Stevenson should be out there less and Henderson (and Gibson) more?

I think the lack of Stevenson's production was mostly related to the OL which is not fully the case with Henderson because he's better at creating his own yards on the outside. Rham has to wear down the defense. 3rd down backs are better at creating something out of nothing. I have no problems with Stevenson...I believe he will end up having around 4.0 - 4.5 ypc for the season.

Agreed on the running game. OL can do better on run blocking but the Raiders knew we were gunning for a run game to set up the pass and were intent on taking that away. As the Raiders also showed it's situational yards that really make a difference.

All the better if they don't know if its a pass or run with Henderson on the field too

On Maye, while it might be a little too soon to give him the freedom that Brady earned, he's looking a bit mechancial going through his reads - and then missing open guys - so I'm not quite taking a position here, aside from hoping that Josh adapts his scheme to Maye, rather than expecting Maye to adapt to the OC.
